Passage for numbers 1-5
Most seafaring nations have myths and legend about the sea. In Norway, they have a story
about a huge sea monster which had a mouth strong enough to bore through a ship. “Nobody is
to come into this part of the ocean,” the monster would gurgle as the soldiers huddled together
below deck.
The ancient Chinese believed the sea was ruled by four dragon kings. Each dragon had a huge
army. “No one is to enter my kingdom without my permission,” a sea dragon would command
his crab and fish watchmen.
A Greek legend tells a story about how a school of dolphins saved the life of the musician Arion.
Arion was attacked by a ship’s crew who wanted his valuables. “You are to come with us,” they
instructed. “The captain is interested in your possessions.” But the dolphins rescued him and
brought him to safety.
There is a delightful legend about the origin of the Philippines. A bird was looking for a place to
land. Seeing none, he got the sea and the sky to quarrel. “You are to stay where you are,”
screamed the sky. The sky rained down huge rocks on the sea and the Philippine islands were
formed from these rocks.
