History of Basketball (Vocal, 2014)
Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 in Springfield,
Massachusetts. Dr. Naismith was a college professor who wanted to create a game that his
physical education classes could play inside during the long winters. The first games used
peach baskets nailed to the wall for rims. The first ball used was a soccer ball. The game
was called PEACH BASKETS during 1891 in Springfields.
1892 - The first set of rules was published and distributed through the YMCA movement
and this resulted in the game spreading rapidly throughout Canada and the USA.
In 1893, he replaced the peach basket with iron hoops and a hammock-style
basket.
1893 - The game was introduced into the Physical Training College in Hampstead (now
Dartford College of PE) by Madame Berman Osterberg.
1898 - A professional league was established in the USA
1911- Basketball had spread throughout the UK as a sport
1924 – Basketball was introduced as a demonstration sport at the Paris Olympic Games
and Great Britain won the title.
1932 – Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) is founded in Geneva,
Switzerland. Léon Bouffard is elected first FIBA President. William Jones is named first
FIBA Secretary General
1936 – Basketball for Men became an official Olympic sport held at Berlin, Germany
with 23 countries participated

1910 Basketball was first introduced to the Philippine public school system by the
Americans as a women's sport.
1910s - The first Philippine Men's National Team was organized.
1936 - The Philippines became a member of FIBA through the Basketball Association of
the Philippines (BAP)
1976 - First Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament at Montreal Olympics
