Empowering Farmers: A Student's View

The short story "Tata Selo" by Rogelio Sikat depicts a farmer who murders a landowner after his land is forcibly stolen due to social injustice against the poor in their society. The story shows the difficult life of farmers and reflects the challenges real farmers currently face with lack of land ownership. After reading the story, the student learned they should help spread awareness of these issues in society and support farmers' dreams of land ownership, education for their children, and sustainable incomes.

Tata Selo by Rogelio R. Sikat

(A reaction paper)

According to Rogelio Sikat’s short story “Tata Selo”, a farmer murdered the landowner. Due to
the fact that his land has been forcibly stolen. Social injustice or inequality in our society,
particularly as it affects the poor, is depicted in this story. If you are poor then you will not be
given the same treatment as the rich and powerful people, instead you will experience what hell
feels like. In addition, this short story depicts a farmer’s day in life, which is comparable to what
our farmers are going through at the moment that they don’t own a land. As I read the short story,
life is really unfair, especially to the impoverished people who just want to live a normal life, but
they are being abused by wealthy and powerful ones. After reading the short story, we as a student
learner should be responsible for what is happening in our society; we should help our society and
encourage people to spread awareness like this and start enhancing our skills and our training
policies. Also as an Agriculture student let’s help our farmers in the future especially their
aspirations and dreams to have their own land, scholarship for their children, to boost their
agricultural production and to have a sustainable source of income to satisfy our farmer which they
rightfully deserve.
