Introduction

Bucharest is the capital municipality, cultural, industrial, and financial centre of Romania. It is
the largest city in Romania, located in the southeast of the country, lies on the banks of the
Dâmbovița River, less than 70 kilometres (43 miles) north of the Danube River.
Bucharest was first mentioned in documents in 1459. It became the capital of Romania in 1862
and is the centre of Romanian media, culture and art. Its architecture is a mix of historical (neo-
classical), interbellum (Bauhaus and Art Deco), Communist-era and modern. In the period
between the two World Wars, the city's elegant architecture and the sophistication of its elite
earned Bucharest the nickname of "Little Paris" (Micul Paris). Although buildings and districts
in the historic city centre were heavily damaged or destroyed by war, earthquakes, and above
all Nicolae Ceauşescu's program of systematization, many survived. In recent years, the city has
been experiencing an economic and cultural boom.
According to 2011 census, 1,883,425 inhabitants live within the city limits, a decrease from the
figure recorded at the 2002 census. The urban area extends beyond the limits of Bucharest proper
and has a population of about 1.9 million people. Adding the satellite towns around the urban
area, the proposed metropolitan area of Bucharest would have a population of 2.27 million
people.According to Eurostat, Bucharest has a Larger Urban Zone of 2,151,880 residents.
According to unofficial data, the population is more than 3 million. Bucharest is the 6th largest
city in the European Union by population within city limits, after London, Berlin, Madrid, Rome,
and Paris. Economically, Bucharest is the most prosperous city in Romania and is one of the
main industrial centres and transportation hubs of Eastern Europe. The city has big convention
facilities, educational institutes, cultural venues, traditional "shopping arcades" and recreational
areas.

VISIT BUCHAREST & ROMANIA

Bucharest is likely to be the first place you see when you set foot in Romania. It is the country’s
capital and its largest city; in fact, it’s 5 times larger than any other city in Romania. This makes
it one of a kind!
Places you should look for when in Bucharest

The Village Museum. A formidable display of rural civilization set in the open air. Get a
glimpse of what the Romanian villages used to look like – and still do in certain remote areas.

The Peasant Museum. Where you can get in touch with the Romanian folklore and admire
beautiful traditional outfits.

The Triumphal Arch. Raised in 1922 to commemorate the completion of Greater Romania, the
original construction was of wood; it was replaced by the present, inaugurated in 1936.

The Palace of the Parliament. Despite being the second largest building in the world, it’s
highly controversial with Romanians, because Dictator Nicolae Ceausescu had it build at
immense costs, presumably out of foolish pride. An important part of the old city had to be
sacrificed in order to make room for this gigantic structure whose taste is questioned by many.
One of the wings hosts an often shocking Museum of Contemporary Art.

Cismigiu Gardens. The oldest public garden in Bucharest. Designed in the former half of the
19th century by a Viennese landscape architect and further embellished over the years.

The National Art Museum. It is located in the former Royal Palace and boasts an impressive
collection of Romanian and European art.

Places you should look for when in Romania

Romania means a lot more than just Bucharest. The country’s not very large (slightly smaller
than the UK), but it’s delightfully varied. Particularly noteworthy are the remote areas where
time seems to have stood still…

Sibiu. This Transylvanian city was designated European Capital of Culture in 2007. Its medieval
charm, the beauty of the surroundings and the local cuisine and traditions are sure to spellbind
you. It has always been the hub of the German minority – and it shows.

Sighisoara. The former medieval citadel is not only well preserved, but people actually live in it!
In fact, it is the largest inhabited medieval citadel in Europe. The landmark of the city is the
Clock Tower, built in 1556.

Bucovina. This region located north of Moldavia is famous for its Christian Orthodox
monasteries that date back from the 15th century; they’re painted on the outside in vivid colors
that have miraculously survived the passage of time. Since Moldavia has a well established wine
tradition, on your way back to Bucharest you may want to visit the medieval wine cellars in
Cotnari.

Peles and Bran castles. Peles Castle (completed in 1883) was the residence of the royal family;
it may be the most beautiful building in Romania, so don’t miss it for the world! Bran Castle is
commonly known as Dracula’s Castle, despite the fact that the Romanian medieval ruler Vlad
the Impaler – who inspired Bram Stoker’s character – never set foot in there…
Maramures. This region located north of Transylvania is a huge museum in the open air where
you can wonder at the wooden churches dating back from the 17th and the 18th centuries, the
beautiful engraved wooden gates and the traditional lifestyle of the inhabitants. The village of
Sapanta has the only cemetery in the world where tombstones are colorful and give a rhymed
account (often funny) of the deceased’s life; that’s why it’s called the Merry Cemetery.

The Danube Delta. The second longest river in Europe flows into the Black Sea and forms a
beautiful delta which is among UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. This fascinating ecosystem is a
real heaven for anyone who likes wild nature and fishing.

Dobrogea. This region located between Walachia and the Black Sea is a semiarid plain that can
display an uncanny lunar landscape. On the shore of the Black Sea lie the ruins of several
fortresses that were established by the Greeks in the 7th and 6th centuries B.C. The region is
famous for the Murfatlar vineyards. The seaside is full of resorts – not quite the Riviera yet, but
you can still have a great time.
