Marel Flowscale
Design
The Marel Flowscale is a compact,
durable, high-capacity belt weigher used
to weigh a continuous flow of material
moving on a conveyor.

The scale is capable of weighing a flow

of up to 100 tons per hour.

Similar to the way water or

electricity meters function; the scale
registers the total weight of the product
flow that is moving across it and
displays the accumulated weight on an
indicator.
Flowscale Function

The Flowscale is designed and built as

W&M certified for in-weighing of pelagic or round
fish from fishing vessel.

The weight appears on the indicator display and

can be sent to Innova for data collection and/or
further data utilization.

The weight is recorded in alibi memory that

stores the weighing data.

The Marel Flowscales are used to ensure

that accurate weight registration is performed
especially when landing fish.

Furthermore to secure that it is done in

accordance to legal requirements.

4
Approval & Verification

The authorities or an accredited calibration company such

as TRESCAL or FORCE can carry out the calibration of
flowscales.
During calibration the Flowscale is sealed in order to prevent
error or misuse.

The Flowscale has EC Type Examination Certificate No. DK 0199.361 issued by Delta.

This Certificate is in accordance with the requirements for the automatic weighing instruments
in Directive 2004/22/EC of the European Parliament and Council of March
31, 2004 on Measuring Instruments (MID).

The conformity with essential requirements in Annex MI-006, chapter I & V of the
Directive 2004/22EC is met by the application of OIML R50-1:1997, section 12 & 13 OIML
D11:2004, WELMEC Guide 7:2:2011, and WELMEC Guide 8.16-4:2006

Sealing of the indicator
There are two ways of sealing the indicator:
1. Using event counters CAL and CON
2. Use of external wire and plumb seal and an internal jumper switch

• The indicator is sealed by two event counters, • In the case of a remote configuration, which

counters.
• These event counters have the function of

• Legal authorities can use their own means of
affixing and inscribing the sealed count of the
event counter, or documenting the count for
later confirmation of the sealing status.
• If sealing of the access of the indicator is
required, a sealing label is placed across the
upper and lower part of the enclosure.

7
Hardware sealing
To secure the Flowscale hardware the height of the conveyor is sealed, this prevents changes to the settings
that could affect weighing results.
This seal is placed under the weighing belt, see item marked 22 in below pictures.

If this seal is broken, the Flowscale needs to be tested and re-verified.

The scale will not function in line with standards or regulations if neither of the two sealing methods are used.
8
Recording of weight measurements
• The Marel Flowscale has only one approved indication of weight which is called a Master Totalizer or
General Totalizer. On the “Home” display the Master Totalizer is presented in large numerical along with
the weighing unit (kg/lb). The weighing division is 1 kg (2lb).

Master totalizer

• The Master Totalizer will keep incrementing until one million tons and is non-resettable, this is done to
prevent tampering.
• When the Master totalizer reaches the limit it will start counting from zero again and starts totalizing
weight from that value. If the Master Totalizer would be removed from the firmware menu, then this would
increment the CON audit trail counter.
• The approved way of recording weight runs is to write down the value of the Master Totalizer at the start
and the end of each run.
9
Data registration & protection
• The Flowscale has a built-in weight-recording device, which
is operated by pressing the “RECORD” key on the M2200
indicator.
Accessing weight records
• A Lua script triggers the recording function of the Flowscale
weighing indicator firmware. If the “RECORD” key is pressed The weight records are

the firmware of the indicator and asks for the value to record,
or to transmit over Ethernet to an external computer.
• The M2200-B03 firmware returns the data, but it also stores
this data in a persistent memory, generally called the alibi
memory. The alibi memory then becomes the recording The last record number is marked with

• Each record is protected by a 16 bit checksum and the

master weight totalizer.

10
Registration of data
A weight can only be recorded when the Flowscale runs “Idle” or if it is “Stop”.
If the status is “Flow” the “RECORD” key will be inactive.

Innova for Flowscale
Innova provides full production control of the machines, processes and procedures in the plant; from incoming raw
material, through processing and on to final goods inventory and dispatch

 Innova Food Processing Software supports

the receiving of raw material, or any other
flow of material within processing facilities
that operate the Flowscale.

 With Innova, processors ensure consistent

and reliable monitoring and reporting of the
flow of material through the Flowscale.

 Using Innova can provide additional

information with the Yield control report that
shows the input product detail by purchase
order.

12
Data registration with Innova
• When Innova receives a record from the
flowscale it creates a pack registration with the
alibi number attached as well as a product
transaction.
• Innova can also receive flow status messages
from the flowscale and record them to a second
path for informational purposes, but that is a
configurable behavior.
• If for some reason a batch is not recorded in
Innova, it is possible to add the information
manually into the Innova system by reviewing
the recent alibi number that was recorded. It is
best to access the flowscale’s web page via a
web browser.
• Regardless of what is registered in Innova the
information there can be crosschecked by
comparing it to the information registered in the
alibi memory.
