Back to Basics: Golf Etiquette and Fundamental Rules Explained
Have you ever wondered why golf is considered the gentleman’s game? Beyond
all the swinging and scoring, golf has always had a rich tradition of unwritten
rules or etiquette that sets it apart from different sports. If you’re eager to
enhance your experience and fully embrace the spirit of the game, this video is
a must-watch for you.

Before we get to the rules and etiquette of the game, let’s start by getting to
know a bit about the game first. The simple idea of golf is to hit the ball into the
hole with a club. It seems doable enough; now we get down to the details. So on
the golf course, which is typical of 18 holes total, you start from the area
referred to as the “Tee Box.” Usually, players carry a standard of anywhere
between 9 to 14 clubs, each with their own usage.
So you take your “Driver” in your hand, a club responsible for hitting the first
long shot, and your aim is towards the area called “Green.” Well, you might say,
1
Hay, I see green grass everywhere; well, the area that I’m referring to is an
almost carpet-like portion of grass around the hole you are aiming for.
Depending on where you’re playing, there could be varying terrain between you
and the green. Some areas that obstruct your ability to play on the course
called “Hazards” include; sand bunkers, natural vegetation, and small lakes or
ponds. The slightly rougher area than the green is called the “Fairway.” The
2
most challenging area to play on the course is called the rough, where it’s

unpredictable to say where the ball would move when hit. So you might want to
keep the ball on the fairway and green as much as possible.

You might wonder why I have to carry this big bag of 14 clubs with me
everywhere I go. Well, the answer to that is options. It would be best to have
different clubs to shoot at different lengths and heights. Apart from the driver,
you need a set of clubs called irons; you usually get to choose from 4 iron to 9
iron. Just so it’s easy to remember, the higher the number, the more horizontal
the shot will become, and the lower the number, the loftier the shot. A player
can use “Wedges” if the ball is closer to the hole. Now you’ve successfully made
it to the green. The club you play with now is called the “Putter.” The green,
while smooth enough to predict the ball’s movement, sometimes has slopes, so
4
golfers need to account for the angle before hitting the shot toward the hole.
Maybe you have to shoot it right for the slope to carry it to the hole. Even hitting
the hole is challenging, while the hole is only twice the size of the ball.

While everyone knows and follows the rulebook, they are some basic etiquettes
5
you should follow if you want to be a well-respected golfer and ensure a
memorable experience for all parties involved.
Firstly, be invisible. Now I don’t want you to vanish from the golf course and
come back when your partner is done playing but make sure you’re standing in
their way and they have plenty of room to swing. You want to facilitate your
partner by being quiet, and you can even ensure that your shadow isn’t in their
way. Golf is a mentally a physically demanding game as a game usually goes on
for more than 4 hours.
While it’s common sense to dress for the occasion, ensure you wear the proper
attire. You don’t want to look like someone out of place and should prefer to

dress decently but comfortably.
In some of the most high-end golf courses, you aren’t required to, but it’s good
manners to tip your caddie a decent tip if you think they did a good job.
Be mindful of other players and look ahead before you shoot your shot; you
wouldn’t want to hit them accidentally.
Lastly, be sure to clean up after yourself; if your shot dislodged some grass or if
6
you made a hole in the sand bunker, clean it up before moving on with your
game, as it keeps the course clean for the other players.
Now on to the basic rules of golf; in general, the body responsible for making
the rule book for worldwide golf is called R&A. Their rule book has 34 in-depth
rules that tell us how to go about the game. We will cover 10 of the most basic
ones.
1. Only carry a maximum of 14 clubs with you. You can take less but ensure
you have all the variety before playing. A typical set for a beginner would
include; a 2-hybrid or a 3 wood, your 3 & 9 irons, a putter, a wedge, a gap
wedge, a driver, and a lob wedge.
1. Tee at the correct location. Make sure you tee up behind and between
the set of given markers. The first shot from the tee is usually daunting
even for veterans of the sport, so take your time adjusting accurately
before a swing.
1. Avoid playing the wrong ball. It seems evident at first, but with so many
different balls on the course, make sure you mark yours with
personalized symbols before playing it. When you’re unsure that the ball
in the rough is yours, you can ask your partners to make sure by picking

it, not wiping it or anything, and just ensuring it has your mark on it. Then
place it back precisely where they picked it from.
1. Rulings for the green. You finally made it to the greens. Now, a small set
7
of rules need to be taken care of while playing. Golfers are now allowed
to mark the ball’s location with a coin or a disc, and then they can pick up
their ball to clean it. Players are allowed to fix damages on the green
such as spike marks, indentations from a club, or any animal damage.
However, players may not change the natural aeration holes or the imperfection
of the hole itself.
8
1. Play your ball from where it lies. Meaning do not play the ball while it’s
8
moving; wait for it to come to rest. You can play it from its new location if
it is driven by wind or natural causes. Be careful not to move others’ balls
because that might result in a penalty.
1. Unplayable ball. If your ball has stopped in, for example, tall shrubbery
or any other place on the course where you feel like you cannot hit it. For
the price of 1 penalty stroke. You have three choices: pick the ball and
drop it two club lengths in a circle around it, imagine a straight line going
back from the hole and in line with the ball, and move back on that line
however much you like, or pick up your ball and take it to the last
9
location where you shot it from.
1. There is no way back from out of bounds. Usually, the boundaries of the
course are marked with white lines, or if you land in the water hazard,
you cannot continue playing. You must go back and start playing from
your original position. You can always declare a provisional when you
shoot out of bounds. Now you’ll have 3 minutes to locate your ball and

continue with that one, or if it is indeed lost, you can use the provisional
one with the penalty of 1 stroke.
1. Seeking advice. In contrast to other sports taking advice is not allowed in
golf; only if you are playing in teams can you ask your teammate or your
caddie if you have one accompanying you.
1. Striking the ball. If you’re ever caught up in a situation where you are in
an awkward stance or the ball is stuck in a weird spot. You must not
spoon, scrape, or flick it. You have to perform a stroke to get out of your
pickle. Otherwise, you’ll be awarded a two-stroke penalty.
1. When playing with your partner, you must’ve exchanged each other’s
scorecards at the start. Ultimately, you have to ensure your scores are
marked correctly and signed.
