ICAR - National Research Centre for Banana
ICAR - National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB) was established on 21 st August
1993 at Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. The centre works with a major objective of increasing the
production and productivity of banana and plantains through mission mode basic and strategic
research approaches. Also, crop improvement, crop production, post harvest management and
crop protection are the major thrust areas of our research. ICAR - NRCB has also developed
approximately 75 technologies in these thrust areas for the betterment of farming community and
the stakeholders.
In order to develop the startup ecosystem, ICAR - National Research Centre for Banana
established Agri Business Incubation Centre (ABI) in the year 2019 under National Agriculture
Innovation Fund (NAIF) - Component II. The main objective is to encourage, nurture and
support technocrats, scientists and innovative agribusiness ideas into sound, commercial,
sustainable ventures. Through this ABI Centre, we provide technical assistance, consultancy,
infrastructure facility, guidance and training to prospective entrepreneurs for successful business
establishment.
Applications are invited with sustainable and innovative ideas related to banana processing
as:
Banana flour based snacks, desserts and bakery products
Banana based beverages
Banana fibre based products
Pickles using flower, stem and peel
Steps to Join ABI
Category I:
Applicants who have already taken Transfer of Technology (ToT) from ICAR - NRC
Banana can directly enroll themselves as an Incubate Member (Annual Membership Fee Rs.
2,000/-) by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) (Pl. refer Annexure – I for
Application form)
Category II:
Startups or entrepreneurs with new innovative ideas on Banana processing and haven’t
taken Transfer of Technology previously through ICAR - NRC Banana can adhere to the
following procedures:
Submission of application by incubatee
Evaluation by advisory commitee of ICAR -
NRCB ABI for technical feasibility and economic
viability
Shortlisted applicants can present their business
proposal for the final approval of the advisory
commitee
After the final selection, a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) will be signed by the
incubatee to start working the proposal
Progress evaluation at periodical intervals for a
successful venture
