IIAR Ammonia Pipe Marker
Reference Guide
Summary of IIAR Standard
The purpose of this standard, developed by the
International Institute for Ammonia Refrigeration
(IIAR) is to create a uniform system for
identification of ammonia refrigeration piping
and system components.

The pipe marker should have five sections:

1. Ammonia System Identification 3. Pressure Rating – The pressure level of the refrigerant
Wording “AMMONIA” in black letters on an orange background. located to the right of “AMMONIA”:
a. If High Pressure – Wording “HIGH” – in black letters on a red background
2. Physical State – The physical state of the b. If Low Pressure – Wording “LOW” - in black letters on a green background
refrigerant located to the left of “AMMONIA”:
a. If Liquid – Wording “LIQ” – 4 2 1 3 5
in black letters on an yellow background

LTRS AMMONIA
b. If Vapor – Wording “VAP” – in black letters L V L
on a blue background I A O
c. If Both – Wording “LIQ” “VAP” – both printed Q P W
in the colors designated above
Meets IIAR Bulletin No. 114 – revised March 2014

5. Directional Flow Arrows – To indicate ammonia refrigerant flow direction, directional arrows are illustrated on the pipe marker.
2 of Seton’s 3 ammonia pipe marking options, Setmark® and Ultra-Mark® ammonia pipe markers, come with directional arrows on the marker.
The Opti-Code™ version does not include arrows. We recommend Arrows-On-A-Roll tape as an option.
