Physical Education Report on Kabaddi and Kho-Kho

INTRODUCTION

Physical Education is an integral part of every educational curriculum. It is the

field of study that involves the development and maintenance of physical
fitness and overall well-being. Physical education not only contributes to the
physical development of an individual, but also helps in promoting mental and
emotional wellness. It includes various sports and activities that are designed
to improve an individual's strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination, and
agility. In this report, we will discuss the importance of fitness and two
traditional Indian sports, kabaddi and kho kho.
Fitness is the ability of an individual to perform physical activities with ease
and without getting tired easily. It is the state of being physically healthy and
fit. Fitness is achieved through regular physical exercise, a balanced diet, and
a healthy lifestyle. The benefits of being physically fit include improved
cardiovascular health, increased muscular strength, improved flexibility, and
reduced risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.
Kabaddi is a traditional Indian sport that originated in ancient India. It is a
contact sport that requires physical strength, agility, and speed. Kabaddi is
played between two teams of seven players each. The objective of the game is
for one player, known as the raider, to enter the opposing team's half and touch
as many players as possible without getting caught while holding his breath
and chanting "kabaddi, kabaddi". The opposing team has to catch the raider
before he returns to his own half. Kabaddi is a sport that requires strategy,
teamwork, and physical fitness.
Kho kho is another traditional Indian sport that is played between two teams
of twelve players each. It is a non-contact sport that requires speed, agility,
and coordination. The objective of the game is for the chaser to tag the runners
of the opposing team while avoiding being caught. The chaser has to tag as
many runners as possible within a stipulated time frame. Kho kho is a sport
that requires quick reflexes, physical fitness, and teamwork.

FITNESS

Physical fitness is the ability of the body to perform physical activities effectively
and efficiently without experiencing undue fatigue or injury. It is essential for
maintaining good health and well-being and plays a critical role in preventing
chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. The five components
of physical fitness are speed, endurance, agility, flexibility, and strength.
Fitness is an essential aspect of maintaining good health and overall well-being. It
involves a combination of physical activity and proper nutrition that supports the
body's ability to perform daily activities and maintain optimal health. Regular
exercise can provide numerous benefits, including increased cardiovascular health,
improved muscle strength and flexibility, and reduced risk of chronic diseases such
as diabetes and obesity.
In addition to physical benefits, fitness can also have a positive impact on mental
health. Studies have shown that exercise can reduce stress, improve mood, and
enhance overall cognitive function. Engaging in physical activity on a regular basis
can also improve sleep quality and promote feelings of relaxation and well-being.
To achieve optimal levels of fitness, it is important to engage in a variety of physical
activities that target different aspects of fitness such as speed, endurance, agility,
flexibility, and strength. Incorporating both aerobic and resistance training exercises
can provide a well-rounded fitness routine that targets all aspects of physical fitness.
Proper nutrition also plays a critical role in achieving and maintaining fitness.
Consuming a balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains,
lean proteins, and healthy fats can support optimal health and physical performance.
Overall, fitness is an important aspect of a healthy lifestyle and can provide
numerous physical and mental benefits. By incorporating regular physical activity
and healthy eating habits into daily life, individuals can improve their overall quality
of life and maintain good health and well-being.

Speed:

Speed is the ability to move quickly over a short distance. It is an essential physical
ability for many sports, including sprinting, football, basketball, and baseball. There
are two types of speed: acceleration and maximum speed. Acceleration is the ability
to increase speed from a stationary position, while maximum speed is the ability to
maintain a high speed over a longer distance. To improve speed, athletes need to
build explosive power in their muscles. This can be achieved through regular
strength training exercises that focus on building muscle mass and improving muscle
coordination. Plyometric exercises such as jump squats and box jumps are
particularly effective for improving speed. Proper nutrition is also vital for
developing speed, as a balanced diet can provide the energy required to perform
explosive movements.

Endurance:

Endurance is the ability to perform physical activities for an extended period without
experiencing fatigue. It is an essential physical ability for many sports, including
long-distance running, cycling, and swimming. Endurance training involves
performing aerobic exercises such as running, swimming, or cycling for extended
periods at a moderate intensity. As the body becomes more efficient at using oxygen,
endurance improves, and athletes can perform physical activities for longer periods.
Endurance training can also help improve cardiovascular health, reduce stress, and
increase mental clarity. Proper hydration and nutrition are also crucial for
developing endurance, as they can help maintain energy levels during extended
periods of physical activity.

USAIN BOLT HAS SPEED AS WELL AS ENDURANCE

Flexibility:

Flexibility refers to the range of motion around a joint. It is essential for maintaining
mobility and reducing the risk of injury. Flexibility training involves stretching
exercises that target specific muscle groups. Static stretching, dynamic stretching,
and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching are three common
types of stretching exercises that can improve flexibility. Flexibility training can also
help improve posture, reduce muscle tension, and enhance athletic performance.
Proper warm-up and cool-down exercises are also crucial for maintaining flexibility
and reducing the risk of injury.

Agility:

Agility is the ability to change direction quickly and accurately. It is an essential

physical ability for many sports, including basketball, soccer, and tennis. Agility
training involves a combination of strength training and drills that focus on
improving coordination and balance. Exercises such as cone drills, ladder drills, and
plyometrics can help improve agility by enhancing the neuromuscular system's
responsiveness. Proper nutrition is also crucial for developing agility, as a balanced
diet can provide the energy and nutrients required for quick, explosive movements.

SUNIL CHHETRI HAS STRENGTH,FLEXIBILITY & AGILITY

Strength:

Strength is the ability to exert force against resistance. It is a critical component of

physical fitness and is essential for many sports, including weightlifting, football,
and basketball. Strength training involves exercises that target specific muscle
groups and can be performed using bodyweight, free weights, or resistance
machines. Compound exercises such as squats, deadlifts, and bench presses are
particularly effective for building strength. Proper nutrition is also critical for
developing strength, as a balanced diet can provide the protein and nutrients required
for muscle growth and repair. Adequate rest and recovery time are also crucial for
building strength and reducing the risk of injury

KABADDI

Kabaddi is an ancient sport that originated in India and is believed to have been
played for thousands of years. The game has evolved over time and today it is one
of the most popular sports in India and other countries in South Asia.
The exact origins of kabaddi are unclear, but it is believed to have originated in the
Indian subcontinent, with some sources dating it back to over 4,000 years ago. It is
said that kabaddi was played by warriors to demonstrate their strength and agility.
Kabaddi was also played by children in rural areas as a way to improve their physical
fitness.
Kabaddi was played in various forms and had different names depending on the
region it was played in.. During the British colonial era, kabaddi was played mainly
in rural areas and was not given much attention by the colonial authorities.
As kabaddi evolved over time, it began to be played in different formats and rules
varied from region to region. In some areas, the game was played in teams of seven
players, while in others, teams of 12 or more players were common. The game also
had different names depending on the region it was played in, such as ‘Hu-Tu-Tu’
in western India, ‘Chedugudu’ in Andhra Pradesh, and ‘Sadugudu’ in Tamil Nadu.
In the early 20th century, kabaddi began to gain more recognition and was
introduced into schools and colleges in India. The All India Kabaddi Federation
(AIKF) was established in 1950 to promote the sport and establish a national
governing body.
In the early 20th century, kabaddi started to gain popularity and became more
organized. The first rules for the game were established in 1923 by the All India
Kabaddi Federation (AIKF). The first national championship was held in 1952 in
Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and was won by Maharashtra. Kabaddi was included in the
Asian Games for the first time in 1990 and has been a part of every Asian Games
since then.
Kabaddi gained international recognition in the 1980s when the Kabaddi Federation
of India (KFI) was formed. The KFI worked to promote the sport and make it more
popular outside of India. Kabaddi was included in the South Asian Federation (SAF)
games in 1984 and has been a part of every SAF games since then. In recent years,
kabaddi has gained a global audience with the establishment of the Pro Kabaddi
League (PKL) in India in 2014 and the Kabaddi World Cup in 2004.
Kabaddi has a rich and storied history that spans thousands of years. Today, it is one
of the most popular sports in India and other countries in South Asia. With the
establishment of international organizations and events, kabaddi is gaining
popularity on the global stage. Kabaddi continues to evolve and grow, while still
maintaining its ancient roots and traditions.

RULES

There are 10 main rules in the game of Kabaddi ,these are:

• Field dimensions: The playing field is a rectangle of 13 meters wide and 10 meters
long. The field is divided into two halves by a midline and each half is further
divided into two parts - the bonus line and the end line.
• Team composition: Each team consists of seven players. The players on each team
are positioned in the following positions: 3 defenders, 2 corners, 1 raider, and 1 all-
rounder.
• Toss: The game starts with a toss to determine which team gets to choose between
raiding or defending first.
• Raider’s objective: The raider’s objective is to enter the opponent’s half, tag as many
defenders as possible, and return to their own half without being caught. The raider
must continuously chant ‘kabaddi, kabaddi’ while on the opponent’s side of the
field.
• Defender’s objective: The defenders must stop the raider from returning to their own
half by catching them before they can touch the midline. If the defenders
successfully catch the raider, the raider is out.
• Points system: Points are awarded based on the outcome of each raid. If the raider
successfully tags an opponent and returns to their half, their team earns a point. If
the defenders catch the raider, the defenders earn a point.
• Bonus line: If the raider crosses the bonus line during a raid, their team earns two
points. The bonus line is located at a distance of 3.75 meters from the midline.
• Time limit: Each half of the game is 20 minutes long with a five-minute break in
between. If the game ends in a tie, a ‘super raid’ is played, where each team has a
chance to raid and the team with the most points at the end of the super raid wins.
• Fouls: There are several fouls in kabaddi, including touching more than one defender
at a time, touching outside the boundary lines, and taking more than 30 seconds for
a raid.
• Substitutions: Each team is allowed to make up to four substitutions during the
game. Substitutions can be made at any time during the game, but only when the
ball is out of play.

DUTIES OF REFEREE

The referee plays a very crucial role in the match of kabaddi:

• Start and stop the game: The referee is responsible for starting and stopping the
game, blowing the whistle to signal the start and end of each half, as well as for
timeouts, substitutions, and injury breaks.
• Monitor the game: The referee must closely monitor the game to ensure that players
are following the rules, and to spot any fouls or violations. They must be vigilant to
detect any unsporting behavior, such as intentional rough play, or attempting to
influence the decision of the referee.
• Enforce the rules: The referee is responsible for enforcing the rules of the game,
including calling fouls and awarding penalties. The referee has the authority to
caution, disqualify, or eject players for serious infractions.

A REFEREE SIGNALLING DURING A GAME

• Award points: The referee is responsible for awarding points for each successful
raid and defense, as well as for bonus points earned by the raiding team.
• Make decisions: The referee is responsible for making decisions on any disputes or
controversies that arise during the game. Their decisions are final, and cannot be
challenged by the players or coaches.
• Ensure player safety: The referee must ensure that player safety is maintained at all
times. This includes penalizing any dangerous or reckless behavior, and stopping
the game immediately in case of serious injury.
• Communicate with players and coaches: The referee must communicate clearly with
the players and coaches, explaining their decisions, and providing any necessary
instructions or warnings.

SKILLS IN RAIDING

The game of kabaddi has various types of skills and techniques used by the raider
against the opponent team. A raider must possess several skills to avoid becoming
predictable in attack. Raiding involves players going into the opposition half to score
points by attempting a touch on the defenders and returning to their half. Raid Points
are of utmost importance as they help the teams score a majority of their points.
Here are some of the key raiding moves that any raider must have in their skill set:

Touching using hand

After entering the opposition half or crossing the midline, a raider performs a hand
touch by extending his arm to touch the defender. Hand touch is one of the most
common scoring skills for a raider. Running hand touch is an advanced version of
the regular move which requires raiders to touch defenders while being on the move
during a raid. It requires an optimal level of agility and flexibility for a raider to
successfully execute this move.

Toe Touch

A toe touch takes place when a raider swiftly bends down and scores points by using
his foot to make contact with a defender. Heavily reliant on speed and catching
defenders off guard, the toe touch is a spontaneous move attempted by a raider to
outfox unassuming defenders.

Back Kick

During the back kick, a raider turns around and tries to score a touch point by
catching the defender off guard. While performing this move, a raider’s objective is
to deceive defenders by turning their back to the defence before attempting a
backward kick that touches the defender and earns a point. This move requires a
raider to be quick on his feet to execute the skill perfectly. The side kick is another
derivative of the back kick whereas the name suggests, a raider is required to kick
sideways while on the run without losing balance in his attempt to score a touch
point against a defender.

Dubki

One of the more famous offensive skills in kabaddi, the dubki is a move where the
raider has to crouch low, spot an opening amongst a sea of defenders and thrust
himself through the smallest of gaps with force to escape the chain of defenders.
Dept. of Physical Education,DSATM 2022-23 8
Physical Education Report on Kabaddi and Kho-Kho

Scorpion Kick

A scorpion kick is one of the toughest skills to execute for raiders. It requires the
raider to turn his back towards the defender and attempt a touch by raising one of
his feet at a high angle while the other foot and his palms are planted to the ground
for support. It resembles a scorpion’s metasoma or tail, which is why it’s called a
scorpion kick.

SCORPION KICK PERFORMED BY THE RAIDER

Frog Jump

A frog jump takes place when a raider leaps high off the ground by thrusting himself
off the incoming sea of defenders and reaching the midline. To execute the jump,
one requires perfect timing and physical strength while also maintaining the correct
body posture when landing on the ground. Season 7 MVP Pawan Sehrawat was one
of the first exponents of this move in Pro Kabaddi. He also got the nickname ‘Hi-
Flyer’ for this skill.

Crossing Baulk line

It is located 3.75 meters away from the center line of the court, and raiders must
cross this line in order to score pointsHere are some of the rules related to crossing
the baulk line in Kabaddi:

• Raider must touch the opposing team player or baulk line: When a raider enters the
opponent's court, they must either touch one of the defenders or the baulk line to be
considered "in play."
• Raider must not touch the ground with any part of their body: Once a raider has
crossed the baulk line and entered the opponent's court, they must keep moving and
cannot touch the ground with any part of their body until they return to their own
court.
• Raider must not cross the baulk line again: Once a raider has crossed the baulk line
and entered the opponent's court, they cannot cross back over the baulk line until
the end of the raid.
• Raider must not enter the opponent's court illegally: If a raider enters the opponent's
court without touching a defender or the baulk line, or if they cross the baulk line
illegally, such as by jumping or diving, they will be considered "out" and will not
score any points.
Crossing of bonus line

If a raider crosses the bonus line while completing a successful raid, they are
awarded additional points, known as bonus points. The bonus line is located at a
distance of 7 meters from the baulk line.

Here are some important rules related to crossing the bonus line in Kabaddi:

• The raider must cross the bonus line during a successful raid: In order to be awarded
bonus points, the raider must cross the bonus line while completing a successful
raid. This means they must cross the baulk line, touch an opponent, and return to
their own court without getting caught.
• The raider must cross the bonus line before being caught by the defenders: If the
raider is caught by the defenders before crossing the bonus line, they will not be
awarded any bonus points.
• The raider can only score one bonus point per raid: Regardless of how many times
a raider crosses the bonus line during a single raid, they can only be awarded one
bonus point.he bonus line does not affect the number of defenders on the court: The
presence of the bonus line does not change the number of defenders on the court.
Each team can have a maximum of seven defenders on the court at any given time.

SKILLS IN DEFENDING

Chain Formation

In Kabaddi, chain formations refer to the arrangement of defenders in a particular

pattern to create an obstacle for the raider. The objective of the defenders is to catch
the raider before they return to their side of the court. Here are some of the common
chain formations used in Kabaddi:

• The Line Formation: In this formation, defenders stand side by side in a straight
line, making it challenging for the raider to penetrate and escape. This formation is
useful when the defenders are facing a single raider.
• The Circle Formation: In this formation, defenders surround the raider in a circular
pattern, leaving no escape route. This formation is useful when the raider is
surrounded by multiple defenders.
• The Diamond Formation: In this formation, four defenders form a diamond shape,
with the raider inside the diamond. The defenders move inwards towards the raider,
making it difficult for the raider to escape.
• The Pyramid Formation: In this formation, defenders arrange themselves in a
pyramid shape, with the topmost defender leading the charge towards the raider.
This formation is useful when the defenders are confident of catching the raider with
a coordinated effort.
• The Block Formation: In this formation, defenders block the path of the raider by
creating a wall with their bodies. The raider must find a way to slip through the
defenders to score a point.

Types of Catches

• Ankle Hold: This catch is executed by grabbing the raider's ankle and pulling them
down to the ground. It is one of the most commonly used catches in Kabaddi, and it
is highly effective against raiders who rely on their footwork to escape from
defenders. To execute this catch successfully, the defender needs to be quick and
agile, and they must be able to anticipate the raider's movements.
• Thigh Hold: This catch is executed by grabbing the raider's thigh and pulling them
down to the ground. It is effective against raiders who try to jump or leap over the
defenders. To execute this catch, the defender needs to be strong and have good
Waist Hold: This catch is executed by grabbing the raider around the waist and
pulling them down to the ground. It is effective against raiders who try to push
through the defenders with their upper body strength. To execute this catch, the
defender needs to be strong and have good grip strength.
• Back Hold: This catch is executed by grabbing the raider from behind and pulling
them down to the ground. It is effective against raiders who try to escape by running
backward. To execute this catch, the defender needs to be quick and have good
reflexes.
• Chain Catch: This catch is executed by multiple defenders grabbing hold of the
raider's body or clothing simultaneously, making it difficult for the raider to escape.
It requires coordination and communication between the defenders to execute
effectively.
• Block Catch: This catch is executed by the defenders creating a wall with their
bodies, blocking the path of the raider and grabbing hold of them as they try to push
through. It is effective against raiders who rely on their strength to push through the
defenders. To execute this catch, the defenders need to work together and move as
a unit to create a solid block.

Overall, the key to successful catching in Kabaddi is to be quick, agile, and have
good reflexes. Defenders must also be able to anticipate the raider's movements and
adjust their catching technique accordingly. By mastering the different types of
catches and using them strategically, defenders can effectively stop the raiders and
prevent them from scoring points.

COURT DIMENSIONS

• Center line: The center line divides the court into two halves and separates the teams.
The line is marked by a white or colored ribbon or tape, which should be at least
75mm wide.
• Baulk line: The baulk line is located 3.75 meters from the center line and separates
the raiders from the defenders. When a raider enters the defenders' court, they must
cross this line in order to score points.
• Bonus line: The bonus line is located 7 meters from the baulk line and 20 meters
from the end line. It marks the boundary of the bonus area where raiders can score
extra points. A raider who touches the bonus line during a successful raid is awarded
one bonus point in addition to the regular points.
• End line: The end line is the boundary at the end of each half of the court. It is marked
by a white or colored ribbon or tape that should be at least 75mm wide. The end zone
is the area behind the end line and is 1 meter in length.
• Lobbies: The lobbies are the areas outside the court and are used by players who
have been pushed or tackled out of bounds. The lobbies should be at least 1 meter
wide and should not obstruct the view of the players or the referees.

KABADDI COURT DIMENSIONS

The court dimensions may vary slightly depending on the level of play, but the
general dimensions remain the same. The court surface should be smooth and free
from any hazards or obstacles that may cause injury to the players.

KHO-KHO

Kho Kho is a popular traditional Indian sport that has been played for centuries. It
is a team sport that is played by two teams of nine players each. The game involves
chasing and tagging players from the opposing team, and is known for its fast pace
and physical agility.
The origins of Kho Kho are uncertain, but it is believed to have originated in the
Maharashtra region of India. The game was originally played as a form of military
training, with soldiers using it to improve their agility, speed, and coordination. Over
time, Kho Kho became a popular recreational sport, and it was introduced to other
parts of India and eventually to other countries.
In 1959, the Kho Kho Federation of India was formed, which helped to standardize
the rules and regulations of the game. The first national championship was held in
1960, and since then, Kho Kho has become a popular competitive sport at the
national and international levels.
Today, Kho Kho is played in many countries around the world, including India,
Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia. It is particularly popular in
schools and colleges, where it is often used as a way to promote physical fitness and
teamwork among students.
In recent years, efforts have been made to popularize Kho Kho and make it more
accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. The sport has been included in the
Indian Olympic Association's list of recognized sports, which has helped to raise its
profile and attract more players and fans.
One of the most significant changes in modern Kho Kho is the introduction of the
new format of the game, called "Circle Style Kho Kho". In this format, the playing
area is circular, and the teams are made up of seven players each. The game is played
in two halves of seven minutes each, with a one-minute break in between. This new
format of Kho Kho has made the game more fast-paced and exciting, and has helped
to attract a new generation of players and fans.
In addition, Kho Kho has also been included in the Khelo India Youth Games, which
is a national-level multi-sport event for young athletes in India. This has helped to
provide a platform for young Kho Kho players to showcase their talent and compete
at the national level

PARALLEL & BULLET TOE METHOD

The parallel toe technique involves running sideways while keeping both feet
parallel to each other. The player moves in a zigzag pattern, keeping the toes pointed
forward, and the feet shoulder-width apart. This technique allows the player to
change directions quickly and confuse the opponent while maintaining balance.
The bullet toe technique involves running forward and touching the ground with the
ball of one foot while keeping the other foot in the air. This technique enables the
player to move quickly and change direction instantly without losing balance. The
player then switches the position of the feet and repeats the process to move in the
opposite direction.
Both techniques require a combination of speed, balance, and coordination. They
allow the player to evade opponents effectively and cover more ground quickly.
These techniques are especially useful in Kho Kho as the game is fast-paced, and
players need to move quickly to avoid getting tagged by opponents.
In summary, the parallel toe and bullet toe are two techniques used in Kho Kho to
move quickly and evade opponents. The parallel toe involves running sideways
while keeping both feet parallel to each other, while the bullet toe involves running
forward and touching the ground with the ball of one foot while keeping the other
foot in the air. Both techniques require speed, balance, and coordination to be
executed correctly.

GIVING KHO

In Kho Kho, the term "give kho" means to pass the responsibility of chasing the
opponent to a teammate during the game. Giving kho is an essential strategy in Kho
Kho as it allows the players to conserve their energy and avoid getting tired too
quickly. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to give kho in Kho Kho:
• Identify the opponent you want to tag: Look for the opponent who is closest to you
or who is likely to make a move soon.
• Call out the name of your teammate: Once you have identified the opponent, call
out the name of the teammate who is closest to the opponent and shout "Kho!" to
signal your teammate to start chasing the opponent.
• Touch your teammate's back: To pass on the responsibility of chasing the opponent,
touch your teammate's back with your hand. This signals your teammate that they
have to start chasing the opponent.
• Run in the opposite direction: After touching your teammate's back, start running in
the opposite direction to confuse the opponent and create space for your teammate
to chase the opponent.
• Keep an eye on the game: While running in the opposite direction, keep an eye on
the game and be ready to receive kho from your teammate if they pass the

Identify the opponent: Look for the opponent who is trying to tag you and identify
the direction of their approach.
Run towards the pole: Run towards the pole located in the middle of the court. The

Twist your body: While in the air, twist your body in the opposite direction of the

continue running in the opposite direction.
