The decisions we make in our early life, e.g. what school we go to, the subjects we chose to study,
the decision to go to university/college, the courses we choose, can impact our career path. If this decision
is heavily swayed by parental preference, the child may end up following a vocation that, deep down,
they are not interested in. At the same time, without practical guidance and support when pursuing
interests, poor choices can be made.
Everyone has a unique set of skills and aptitudes. Each child is individual in their own way, and so
may possess different skills and abilities to their parents. With this in mind, adopting a similar career role
to either parent may not be the right course of action.
We all take time to ‘find our feet’. Parents will often say things such as “pick a course you think
you’ll like” or “why don’t you apply for this job”. Though it may seem they are doing the right thing in
terms of steering their children in the right direction, parents also need to understand that we all need
space and time to discover what we truly want to pursue. University, for example, isn’t for everyone –
and engaging in relevant work experience and/or undertaking an apprenticeship can be just as valuable in
finding a suitable vocation in which you can thrive.
The trick here is to educate children that life is about self-discovery and new skills and talents are
developed. How many of us are in careers we thought we would be in when we were 18? We can only
make decisions based on what we know about ourselves at the time, take the pressure off of them by
letting them know it's okay that they aren't sure what they want to do yet but the important thing is to be
proactive in finding their way.

The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered new ways of learning. All around the world, educational
institutions are looking toward online learning platforms to continue with the process of educating
students. Online learning offers teachers an efficient way to deliver lessons to students. Online learning
has a number of tools such as videos, PDFs, podcasts, and teachers can use all these tools as part of their
lesson plans. By extending the lesson plan beyond traditional textbooks to include online resources,
teachers are able to become more efficient educators.
Online education allows students to attend classes from any location of their choice. It also allows
schools to reach out to a more extensive network of students, instead of being restricted by geographical
boundaries. Additionally, online lectures can be recorded, archived, and shared for future reference. This
allows students to access the learning material at a time of their comfort.
Another advantage of online learning is reduced financial costs. Online education is far more
affordable as compared to physical learning. This is because online learning eliminates the cost points of
student transportation, student meals, and most importantly, real estate. Additionally, all the course or
study materials are available online, thus creating a paperless learning environment which is more
affordable, while also being beneficial to the environment.
Every student has a different learning journey and a different learning style. Some students are
visual learners, while some students prefer to learn through audio. Similarly, some students thrive in the
classroom, and others are solo learners who get distracted by large groups. The online learning system,
with its range of options and resources, can be personalized in many ways. It is the best way to create a
perfect learning environment suited to the needs of each student.

The development of writing made a huge difference to the world and we might see it as the beginning
of the media. Pieces of pottery with marks on that are probably numbers have been discovered in China
that date from around 4000 BC. Hieroglyphics and other forms of 'picture writing' developed in the area
around Mesopotamia (modem-day Iraq), where the ancient Sumerian civilization was based from around
3300 BC onwards. However, the first true alphabet was used by the Phoenicians around 1050 BC. Their
alphabet had 22 letters and it is estimated that it lasted for 1000 years. The first two signs were called
'aleph' and 'beth; which in Greek became 'alpha' and ‘beta’ which gave us the modern word 'alphabet’.
The modern European alphabet is based on the Greek and spread to other European countries under the
Romans. A number of changes took place as time passed. The Romans added the letter G, and the letters J
and V were unknown to people in Shakespeare's time.
If we look into the history of punctuation, we also find some interesting facts. The Romans used to
write quaesto at the end of a sentence in order to show that it was a question. They started to write Qo in
place of the whole word, and then put the Q above the o. In the end, that became the question mark ‘?’.

The cities in the United States have been the most visible sponsors and beneficiaries of projects that
place art in public places. They have shown exceptional imagination in applying the diverse forms of
contemporary art to a wide variety of purposes. The activities observed in a number of "pioneer" cities
sponsoring art in public places - a broadening exploration of public sites, an increasing awareness among
both sponsors and the public of the varieties of contemporary artistic practice, and a growing public
enthusiasm - are increasingly characteristic of cities across the country. With many cities now undergoing
renewed development, opportunities are continuously emerging for the inclusion or art in new or renewed
public environments, including buildings, plazas, parks, and transportation facilities. The result of these
activities is a group of artworks that reflect the diversity of contemporary art and the varying character
and goals of the sponsoring communities.
In sculpture, the projects range from a cartoonlike Mermaid in Miami Beach by Roy Lichtenstein to a
small forest planted in New York City by Alan Sonfist. The use of murals followed quickly upon the use
of sculpture and has brought to public sites the work of artists as different as the realist Thomas Hart
Benton and the Pop artist Robert Rauschenberg. The specialized requirements of particular urban
situations have further expanded the use of art in public places: in Memphis, sculptor Richard Hunt has
created a monument to Martin Luther King, Jr., who was slain there; in New York, Dan Flavin and Bill
Brand have contributed neon and animation works to the enhancement of mass transit facilities. And in
numerous cities, art is being raised as a symbol of the commitment to revitalize urban areas.
By continuing to sponsor projects involving a growing body of art in public places, cities will certainly
enlarge the situations in which the public encounters and grows familiar with the various forms of
contemporary art. Indeed, cities are providing artists with an opportunity to communicate with a new and
broader audience. Artists are recognizing the distinction between public and private spaces, and taking

The increase in urbanization causes different problems. Air and water pollution are amongst the
major issue we have to tackle.
In the first place, cars, factories and burning waste emit dangerous gases that change the air
quality in our cities and pose threats to our health. Dangerous gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen
oxides cause respiratory diseases, for instant, bronchitis and asthma. Those are also proved to have long-
term effects on the environment.
Furthermore, with the increased population, it becomes difficult to manage the waste generated in
cities. Most of the waste is discharged or dumped into rivers or onto streets. The waste pollutes water and
makes it unfit for human consumption. Subsequently, it becomes more and more difficult for city
dwellers to get clean water. Some cities in Africa are unable to provide adequate water supply because
most of the water is lost in pipe leakages. In fact, most city dwellers in developing countries are forced to
boil their water or to buy bottled water, which is very expensive.
There are several actions that could be taken to eradicate the problems described above. Firstly, a
simple solution would be joining community efforts to address problems affecting your city. Ask your
parents, friends and relatives to join in as well. These efforts might include clean-up campaigns, recycling
projects and a signature campaign to ask the government to do something about the situation. A second
measure would be encouraging your teacher to talk about these problems and to discuss how young
people can help to solve them. Finally, writing to local organizations working on these issues for ideas on
how you can contribute to solve them.

EDUCATION IN THE FUTURE
Education is another area of social life in which information technology is changing the way we
communicate. Today's college students may not simply sit in a lecture or a library to learn about their
field. Through their computers and the wonders of virtual reality they can participate in lifelike
simulated experiences. Consider the following scenario of the future of education made possible through
developments in information technology.
For children over the age of 10, daily attendance at schools is not compulsory. Some of the older
children attend school only once or twice weekly to get tutorial support or instruction from a teacher. For
the most part, pupils are encouraged to work online from home. Students must complete a minimum
number of study hours per year; however, they may make up these hours by studying at home at times
that suit their family schedule. They can log on early or late in the day and even join live classes in other
countries. In order to ensure that each student is learning adequately, computer software will
automatically monitor the number of hours a week each student studies on-line as well as that students'
learning materials and assessment activities. Reports will be available for parents and teachers. The
software can then identify the best learning activities and condition for each individual student and
generate similar activities. It can also identify areas of weak achievement and produce special programs

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the following questions.
Super Size Me is a 2004 film by Morgan Spurlock, in which he documents his
experiment to eat only McDonald's fast food three times a day, every day, for thirty days.
Spurlock made himself a short list of rules for the experiment, including an obligation to eat all of the
three meals he ordered. He also had to ‘Super Size’, which means accepting a giant portion every time
the option was offered to him. He ended up vomiting after the first Super Size meal he finished, after
taking nearly twenty minutes to consume it.
After five days Spurlock put on almost 5kg, and he soon found himself feeling depressed, with no
energy. The only thing that got rid of his headaches and made him feel better was another McDonald's
meal, so his doctors told him he was addicted. More seriously, around day twenty, he started experiencing
heart palpitations and one of the doctors detected liver problems. However, in spite of his doctor's advice,
Spurlock continued to the end of the month and achieved a total weight gain of 11kg. His body mass
index also increased from a healthy 23.2 to an overweight 27.
It took Spurlock fifteen months to recover from his experiment and return to his original weight, but the
film also had a wider impact. Just after its showing in 2004, McDonald's phased out the Super Size option
and healthier options like salads appeared on the menu. Unfortunately, McDonald's denied the connection
between the film and the changes, but it is interesting to note how closely they coincided with the release
of the film.

Successful students often do the followings while studying. First, they have an
overview before reading. Next, they look for important information and pay greater attention
to it (which often needs jumping forward or backward to process information). They also
relate important points to one another. Also, they activate and use their prior knowledge.
When they realize that their understanding is not good, they do not wait to change strategies.
Last, they can monitor understanding and take action to correct or “fix up” mistakes in
comprehension.
Conversely, students with low academic achievement often demonstrate ineffective study skills.
They tend to assume a passive role in learning and rely on others (e.g., teachers, parents) to monitor their
studying, for example, low-achieving students often do not monitor their understanding of content; they
may not be aware of the purpose of studying; and they show little evidence of looking back, or employing
"fix up strategies to fix understanding problems. Students who struggle with learning new information
seem to be unaware that they must extent effort beyond simply reading the content to understand and
remember it. Children with learning disabilities do not plan and judge the quality of their studying. Their
studying may be disorganized. Students with learning problems face challenges with personal
organization as well. They often have difficulty keeping track of materials and assignments, following
directions, and completing work on time. Unlike good studiers who employ a variety of study skills in a
flexible yet purposeful manner, low-achieving students use a restricted range of study skills. They cannot
explain why good study strategies are important for learning; and they tend to use the same, often
ineffective study approach for all learning tasks, ignoring task content, structure or difficulty.

Do you think animals can predict the weather or other natural events? Farmers living in the
countryside think so. For hundreds of years, they have observed animals and noticed many things about
the way animals act. For example, some farmers believe that if they see swans flying into the wind, a
hurricane is coming. Or, when cows lie down, a rainstorm is coming. There are many traditional stories
connecting animals and natural events. Some scientists are taking another look at animals to see if there is
any truth behind these stories and beliefs. They have found some surprising things.
Kiyoshi Shimamura is a Japanese earthquake researcher. He noticed an increase in dog bites a short
time before earthquakes hit. Then, he did an investigation of twelve public health centers in Kobe, Japan.
These health centers treated people after a big earthquake. Shimamura noticed that the month before the
big earthquake, treatment for animal bites had increased. In fact, aggressive behavior in dogs, such as
biting and barking loudly, jumped 60 percent!
Other animals change their behavior before an earthquake as well. For example, fish in ponds or lakes
begin swimming together in large groups only in the middle of the water and not near the edges. Also,
birds may fly away from their nests for many days, leaving their eggs unprotected. These behaviors
suggest that animals may be able to predict natural events, such as earthquakes, better than people.

For a long time, it was thought that the answer for the question “where does excellence come from?”
hinged, in large part, upon talent. Hard work may be important but if you don’t have the ability, you are
never going to become top class. It is the notion that high-level performers have excellence encoded in
their DNA.
It turns out that this point of view is mistaken. Dozens of studies have found that high-flyers across
all disciplines learn no faster than those who reach lower levels of attainment – hour after hour, they
Bộ đề minh hoa TN THPT – Môn Anh - 2023 Trang 51/
improve at almost identical rates. The difference is simply that high achievers practise for more hours.
Further research has shown that when students seem to possess a particular gift, it is often because they

The question of talent versus practice/experience would not matter much if it was merely theoretical.
But it is much more than that. It influences the way we think and feel, and the way we engage with our
world. And it determines our motivation. To see how, consider an employee who believes success is all
about talent – this is known as the ‘fixed mindset’. Why would they bother to work hard? If they have
the right genes, won’t they just cruise to the top? And if they lack talent, well, why bother at all? And
who can blame someone for having this kind of attitude, given the underlying premise? If, on the other
hand, they really believe that practice trumps talent — the ‘growth mindset’ — they will persevere.
They will see failure as an opportunity to adapt and grow. And if they are right, they will eventually
excel. What we decide about the nature of talent, then, could scarcely be more important.
So, how to create a growth mindset within an organisation? Interventions which have presented
participants with the powerful evidence of how excellence derived from perseverance – which explains
the possibility of personal transformation – have had a dramatic impact on motivation and performance.
When this is allied with clearly identifiable pathways from shop floor to top floor, so that employees can
see the route ahead, these results are strengthened further.

Some doctors think that you should drink a glass of water each morning. You should drink this water
first thing, before doing anything else. The temperature of the water should be similar to body
temperature; neither too hot nor too cold.
Why should you drink this water? Water helps your body in many ways. It helps clean out your
kidneys. It prepares your stomach for digestion. Water can also help your intestines work better. After
drinking water, the intestines can more easily take out nutrients from our food. Water also helps us go to
the bathroom more easily.
Scientists suggest that people take in 1,600 milliliters of water each day. But don’t drink all of that
water in one sitting. If you do, your kidneys will have to work much harder to eliminate it. It’s better to
drink some in the morning and some in the afternoon. Some people think it’s better to drink between
meals and not during meals. They think water dilutes the juices produced in our stomachs. This can
interfere with normal digestion.
Are you drinking enough water every day? Check the color of your urine. If it is light yellow, you are
probably drinking enough. If your urine is very dark yellow, you probably need to drink more water. A
little more water each day could make you much healthier.

Most people currently realize the danger of using credit card numbers online. However, from time to
time, we all use passwords and government ID numbers on the Internet. We think we are safe, but that
may not be true! A new kind of attack is being used by dishonest people to steal IDs and credit card
numbers from innocent web surfers. This new kind of attack is called “phishing”.
Phishing sounds the same as the word “fishing”, and it implies that a thief is trying to lure people into
giving away valuable information. Like real fishermen, phishers use bait in the form of great online deals
or services. For example, phishers might use fake emails and false websites to con people into revealing
credit card numbers, account usernames, and passwords. They imitate well-known banks, online sellers,
and credit card companies. Successful phishers may convince as many as five percent of the people they
contact to respond and give away their personal financial information.
Is this really a big problem? Actually, tricking five percent of the online population is huge! Currently,
more than 350 million people have access to the Internet, and seventy-five percent of those Internet users
live in the wealthiest countries on Earth. It has been estimated that phishers send more than three billion
scam messages each year. Even by tricking only five percent of the people, phishers can make a lot of
money.
Since there is so much money to make through this kind of scam, it has caught the interest of more
than just small-time crooks. Recently, police tracked down members of an organized phishing group in
Eastern Europe, who had stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from people online. The group created
official-looking email messages requesting people to update their personal information at an international
bank’s website. However, the link to the bank in the message actually sent people to the phishers’ fake
website. To make matters worse, further investigation revealed that this group had connections to a major
crime gang in Russia.
How can innocent people protect themselves? Above all, they have to learn to recognize email that has
been sent by a phisher. Always be wary of any email with urgent requests for personal financial
information. Phishers typically write upsetting or exciting, but fake, statements in their emails so that
people will reply right away. Also, messages from phishers will not address recipients by name because
they really don’t know who the recipients are yet. On the other hand, valid messages from your bank or
other companies you normally deal with will typically include your personal name.

EDUCATION IN THE FUTURE
Education is another area of social life in which information technology is changing the way we
communicate. Today's college students may not simply sit in a lecture or a library to learn about their
field. Through their computers and the wonders of virtual reality they can participate in lifelike

For children over the age of 10, daily attendance at schools is not compulsory. Some of the older

number of study hours per year; however, they may make up these hours by studying at home at times
that suit their family schedule.
It can also identify areas of weak achievement and produce special programs
adjusted to the students' needs.

Students who struggle with learning new information
seem to be unaware that they must extent effort beyond simply reading the content to understand and

flexible yet purposeful manner, low-achieving students use a restricted range of study skills. They cannot
