Movies that fail to move
A No Country for Old Men
Despite the Coen brothers’ four Academy Awards, I found the ending of this 2007 movie disappointing. The movie
is a kind of cat-and-mouse tale, where Vietnam veteran Llewelyn Moss is the mouse, and hitman Anton Chigurh
the cat. Finding a case containing two million pounds in a field in Texas, Moss flees with the money, and Chigurh
is hired by its owners to recover it. Chigurh finishes off everyone standing between him and Moss, using his
trademark coin flip to decide the victim’s fate. The tension mounts as Chigurh nears his prey, but just when it
appears that the two are set to clash, Moss is killed by someone else – off-screen. For me, the greatness of this
movies lies in the journey, not the destination.
B The Hurt Locker
Kathryn Bigelow’s 2008 movie is awesome – at least, for the first hour or so. When the lights go down, the
audience is transported to the battle-scarred streets of Baghdad, where a bomb disposal squad is at work defusing
an explosive device. At the start, the movie is a rollercoaster ride, with the tension rising and falling as the bombs
are deactivated – or not. Later, however, it suddenly becomes clear that, although the bombs are getting bigger, the
action is repeating itself. Towards the end, one soldier gets injured, another shows signs of mental stress and their
leader goes home on leave until he can return to do the same all over again. What we seem to have here is a
depiction of a conflict zone rather the exploration of a plot line.
C Up in the Air
Jason Reitman’s 2009 satirical movie about corporate ‘downsizer’ Ryan Bingham is certainly a lot of fun at the
start. Bingham – played by George Clooney – is employed by a Human Resources consultancy to travel the country
firing people. Enter Alex, a beautiful executive in the same league as Bingham, and a new colleague, Natalie,
whose innovative idea for remote firing via webcam threatens Bingham’s very existence. The movie falls apart,
however, when Bingham discovers that Alex isn’t the woman he thought she was. From this point on, the audience
is talked through the action rather than feeling it. We discover that Bingham gives Natalie a glowing reference to
help her get a new job, but Alex gets no further mention. Bingham himself is last seen dropping his luggage in front
of the destination board of an airport, which could mean anything, really.
