Activity # 3: Laboratory Instrument

Objective/s:
After completing the task, students should be able to:
a. identify the laboratory instruments and equipment; and
b. Determine the function(s) of the laboratory instruments and how to use them.
Introduction
Using laboratory equipment safely with hazardous compounds is essential. This task
requires regular maintenance and examination of laboratory equipment. Many laboratory
mishaps are caused by incorrect usage or maintenance of laboratory equipment. This activity
teaches safe laboratory equipment handling techniques.
Electromechanical devices for working with compressed gases, high or low pressures,
and temperatures are the most typical equipment risks in laboratories. Lasers and radio-
frequency generators emit electromagnetic radiation. Ordinary risks including water-cooled
equipment flooding, rotating equipment accidents, cutting and drilling machines or tools, noise
extremes, slips, trips, falls, lifting, and poor ergonomics cause the most laboratory accidents
and injuries. Hand injuries are fairly common in laboratories. When handling laboratory
equipment, use proper gloves to avoid electrical, thermal, and chemical burns, cuts, and
punctures.
Instructions: Be able to recognize the name of each piece of laboratory equipment, as well as
its function or use.
