Definition:
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept whereby companies integrate social and
environmental concerns in their business activities and they also integrate with their
stakeholders.

The earliest and most prominent definitions ascribed to CSR is the one given by “Howard
Bowen” who (Carroll, 1999) refer to as the father of Corporate social responsibility “the
obligations of businessmen to pursue those policies, to make those decisions, or to follow
those lines of action which are desirable in terms of the objectives and values of our society”

According to the above discussion we can say that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is
not a difficult concept and can be explained as:
 Corporate - means “To organise business”
 Social - means “To deal everything with people, the society at large”
 Responsibility - means “To ensure accountability between the two”

The practise of CSR in Bangladesh:

The practise CSR in Bangladesh is given below separately with suitable example on the basis
of analysing the industrial sectors of Bangladesh:

Square Pharmaceuticals:
SQUARE Pharmaceuticals Limited is one of the largest pharmaceutical company in
Bangladesh and everybody know that, it has been continuously in the 1st position among all
national and multinational companies since 1985. From the beginning they are widely
associate in many kinds of social activities. Some of them are given below:

Internal Social Responsibilities:

1. Aparajita:
The project “Aparajita” helps to ensure empowerment of rural women so that they can
earn money by purchasing our products at very lower & by selling those products to rural
areas at Maximum Retail Price. In such way they are also able to earn money and they
also provide necessary information about basic health & hygiene to the rural areas. Aa a
result, the rural women can understand the use of sanitary napkin and health soaps.

2. Education facilities for employees’ children:

Education is important an element in every human life and everybody has the right to
achieve knowledge by learning. That’s why Square Pharmaceuticals takes initiative plan
to provide education for the employee’s children.

External Social Responsibilities:

1. Activities Towards Public Health:

In the external sector, Square Pharmaceuticals Limited also concerns for public health.
That’s why they organise public campaign for the rural people to make them conscious
about their health. They also ensure to avoid harmful and chemical products to save their
health. In their various project they also provide necessary medicines to the people for
saving public health.

2. Road Safety Campaign and Road Side Shades:

To ensure safety Square Pharmaceuticals provides billboards and instructions to
everywhere so that people can walk, drive car and pass road carefully. To avoid risk, they
donated to establish flyover on the highways and even they have organised several
projects for providing awareness about road safety.

3. ‘Dishari’- A Training Institution of IT:

“Dishari’ is one of their remarkable external CSR activities for the unemployed
people. Dishari is a training centre which is established at Pabna. Dishari training
centre provides computer training to the rural and unemployed community who
cannot afford to pay for costly training programs. Basically, their main aim to develop
the IT sector of Bangladesh.

4. Protecting the Environment:

Square Pharmaceuticals Limited has taken several actions for the welfare of the society as
well as for the environment such as:
 Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP)
 Green Belt
 Incinerator Plant

PRAN-RFL Group:
PRAN-RFL group is one of the biggest business organizations in Bangladesh. Basically, it
was established in 1981. But now, it is one of the biggest profitable business organization in
Bangladesh. Every year this group provides many kinds of facilities to our society. They also
distribute a certain percentage of their profit to develop our society as well as country. To
make it clear, some examples of them are given below:

1. Working with ‘SAVE THE CHILDREN’:

PRAN-RFL group has been working with SAVE THE CHILDREN for a lang time to
develop the children of our country. It mainly works for children. It ensures:
 Children’s health
 Children’s education
 Children’s mental development
 Children’s recreation

2. Working together with Red Crescent:

The Red Crescent is a social organization in Muslim countries that mainly helps
people who are suffering, for example as a result of war, earthquake, floods, drought
and PRAN-RFL group has been working with them to help affected people.

3. Helping the community in natural calamities:

Bangladesh is very much prone to natural calamities. Every year a large number of
natural calamities for example earthquake, war, flood, drought, cyclone etc. hit
Bangladesh rendering thousands of people marooned. In these situations, PRAN-RFL
group ensures the following facilities:
 Ensure fund for the affected people
 Send goods in affected areas
 Ship supplies into recovery and evacuation zones
 Donate cloth in awkward situations
 Donate blood

4. Helping Mosque, Temple & Churches Hospital:

To develop Mosque, Temple, Churches, Hospital etc. PRAN-RFL group provides a
large amount of money to the society every year. They also donate for the
development of traditional architecture.

Robi Axiata Ltd:

Robi Axiata Limited is a public limited company and they are one of the best
telecommunication company in Bangladesh. Robi strongly related with CSR activities by
ensuring many kinds of facility like Education. Health, environment, IT etc. Their social
activities are given below properly to make clear:

1. Water Treatment Plant:

To provide Safe drinking water facility for railway passengers at different divisional
railway stations they installed water tank with the capacity of 5000 litre of safe drinking
water. A large number of passengers is travelled by train every day from various places.
So, they took the plan to serve safe water during travel.

2. Robir Alo:
Robi Axiata Ltd has already supplied solar-electricity to the 150 families of Kaluar Char
village of Rajarhat upazila of Kurigram district without any cost. Robi has also its plan to
extent the similar program at other locations too.

3. Zero Club Feet:

To maintain health, Robi Axiata Ltd has also been conducting a wide range of social
activities like awareness campaign, blood donation, health check-up, etc. The noticeable
program in this field had been the treatment of hundreds of clubfeet children in various
areas. Mainly, the program was operated in nine districts under Chittagong division aimed
in 2012.

4. English in Schools (EIS):

Robi Axiata Limited established 1000 schools within 64 districts with 7 million students
and 10,000 teachers & English in schools, the biggest ever CSR project in Robi's history.
Basically, it is a language learning program school. The purpose of the school to develop
children in English language and literature. To develop this project, they are donating a
large amount of money every year.

5. Basic Computer Training:

Robi Axiata Limited has already taken an initiated training program on Basic Computer
knowledge for the rural students of 72 colleges in 64 districts of Bangladesh where Robi
has already installed Computer Corners to ensure IT knowledge among the students of
rural and semi-urban areas. Robi think that IT knowledge is a powerful element for the
present generation. That why’s they are strongly concerning with this project.

Beximco pharma Limited:

Beximco Pharma Limited is a one of the most leading pharmaceutical company in
Bangladesh. Beximco was established in 1976. Beximco pharma has been helping the people
of Bangladesh in various way. For example:

1. Donation in Clean Water Management:

On behalf of Fazlur Rahman Foundation Beximco pharma has started and installed 200
numbers of Arsenic free tube wells to the poor inhabitants of Dahor entirely free cost. The
foundation has also its plan to extent the similar program at other locations too.

2. Donations in calamities:
Beximco Group donated their own medicines to the affected areas in Bangladesh. The
Group also served medicines and other facilities to effected people of earthquake in
Pakistan and effected people of tsunami in Sri Lanka are worth remarkable.

3. Initiative to female health development:

Beximco Group already taken several plans to develop female health in Bangladesh. They
donated a big amount of money to establish clinic and hospital to save female health.
They also organise many campaigns in the rural areas to make them aware about female
health.

4. PROYASH:
Proyash is a specialized institute that mainly works for the improvement of the hostile
children with special educational needs through different programs.
The project includes:
 Special schooling
 Therapeutic interventions
 Medical and neuro-developmental assessment
 Leisure time and co-curricular activities
 Training for the teachers
 Parents and integrated services

5. Sponsoring events and national sport stars and teams:

They Officially sponsored of the Bangladesh National Cricket team for the ICC Cricket
World Cup 2011 and they also sponsored of the FIFA friendly match between Argentina
and Nigeria held in September, 2011

EXIM Bank:
Exim Bank is a one of the most popular private financial institution of Bangladesh. In recent
years CSR has become a fundamental business practice of Exim Bank of Bangladesh. EXIM
Bank believes that CSR activities can change the image of Bangladesh dramatically and if we
follow CSR activities it will be better for society as well as for the whole country.

1. EXIM Bank Scholarship Program:

EXIM Bank launched their Scholarship Program in 2006 for the meritorious students.
Every year they donate scholarship to the students of Dhaka City including Dhaka
University, BUET, Viqarunnissa Noon School and College etc. But now they are
providing scholarship to the students of all public universities.

2. EXIM Bank Agricultural University, Bangladesh (EBAUB):

EXIM Bank Agricultural University, Bangladesh (EBAUB) was founded by Exim Bank
in 2012. After that the university Officially recognized by the University Grants
Commission of Bangladesh. It is a very popular private university in Bangladesh. It is
mainly established to develop the educational sectors of Bangladesh.

3. EXIM Bank Hospital:

Exim bank already installed my hospitals in various sectors of Bangladesh. The
noticeable hospitable was established at Mirpur in Dhaka. They provide many kinds of
additional facilities in their hospital.

4. Helping people affected by natural calamities:

It is another important part of EXIM Bank to help affected people in case of natural
calamities. Under this welfare programme, EXIM Bank provides:
 Relief
 Medicines
 Cloth
 Temporary accommodation
 Fresh water

5. Beautification of Dhaka City:

To increase beauty of Dhaka city Exim Bank has taken several steps with the help of
government. They think that a clean city can ensure a healthy life.

Conclusion:
Finally, we can say that CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility is very important both for an
industry and a country. CSR helps to change negative intension from the society. It also
ensures the rights of human, employee, worker and also government That’s why every
country of the world is practising CSR to develop them.
