INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Senior High School refers to Grades 11 and 12, the final two years of

the K to 12 Basic Education Program. Students in SHS must complete a basic

curriculum as well as topics from a track of their choice. Senior High School is

a stepping stone to college life. Many strands enable you to explore and

discover your full potential before entering college. But what if you are

indecisive about your future college course, what if you’re influenced by many

factors that greatly affect your decision in choosing an SHS strand. According

to the University of Maryland (2010), “career anxiety is one specific problem

that can block decision-making and contribute to indecision.” It is very

important to always assess yourself to make sure that your chosen strand will

be the right choice for you.

The Fatima National High School’s Senior High School Curriculum only

has the following strands; Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics (STEM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS),

Accountancy and Business Management (ABM), Shielded Metal Arc Wielding

(SMAW), Computer System Servicing (CSS), Plumbing, Foods and

Beverages Services, Hair Dressing, and Computer System Servicing (CSS).

According to Boyer (2010), “in taking a course, one of the life’s major

decisions is being made. A lot of time, money, and effort will be involved. The

shape and excellence of the student’s life may rest on the result.” In choosing

1
which strand you will be taking on; one must remember what will be made out

of it and must face the consequences of their action.

Decision-making has never been too easy, selecting a strand that you

want in senior high school takes up a lot of values that you have to have as an

aspiring student of that academic track. Some students believe in their friends'

advice and follow where their friends are, but little did they know how

important it is to have a strand that is aligned on your future college course.

Most students are influenced by their Personal, Peers, and Family’s issues

and choices, if placing grades in great consideration, selecting a strand would

be very difficult, as you do not only consider yourself but also the advice of

others that makes you want to think again if that choice was really wise.

The researchers were motivated to conduct this study because they

also have gone through this phase. Assessment of this kind will be a great

help to the future SHS learners, as they would not regret entering a specific

strand just because they were influenced by the factors affecting their

decisions.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of the factors

that affect the selection of strand among Grade 10 BEC students of Fatima

National High School. Specifically, this study answered the following

questions:

1. What are the factors affecting Grade - 10 BEC students in choosing their

strand?

2. What strand will they be choosing after assessing themselves?

2
3. What is the most significant factor that affects the decision of grade 10 BEC

students in choosing their strand?

Significance of the Study

Learning is a component of development that refers to the modification

of behavior, skills, and knowledge as a result of practice and experience in

pursuit of quality education.

This study will benefit the following sectors of society by letting them

know that the findings of this investigation could be highly significant and

beneficial, particularly to the following:

To the Students. As future Senior High School Learners, the findings

of this study will benefit and inspire them to formulate and carry out their

chosen career plans. This study will help them as a step toward selecting their

chosen strands. It will prepare them to choose the right strand and distinguish

which strand their potential may be more developed.

To the Community. The community will benefit from this study as well,

as they are critical to the school's development. As a result, they would gladly

lend their support to the school's future development.

To the Parents and teachers. They are also more likely to give wise

advice to their children and students about the chosen strand.

To the Researchers. As the K-12 curriculum's role model. This study

will benefit, greatly assist, and inspire them to be more innovative and carry

out Department of Education (DepEd) programs that will benefit both learners

3
and teachers. This will be beneficial to the researchers. As a result of their

research, they can learn what they need to know.

Scope and Delimitations

The primary goal of this research is to investigate the factors that

influence strand preferences in senior high school students. The study only

includes the twenty-one (21) sections of Grade 10 Basic Education

Curriculum of Fatima National High School enrolled into school year 2022-

2023. Slovin’s formula will be used to get the number of respondents. This

study primarily focuses on factors such as personal issues, parental influence,

peer influence, and the students’ grades. There could be other factors, but

they would not be included in this study.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature, studies, conceptual

framework, hypothesis and definition of terms which the researcher found to

have direct bearings on the present study. The researchers conducted

extensive online readings of materials. The majority of the literature reviewed

discusses the factors that influence preferences/choices.

Related Literature

One of the most significant educational reforms in the Philippines has

been the implementation of K-12 programs. The mission of the kindergarten

to Grade 12 Basic Education Program is to "develop a holistically developed

Filipino with 21st-century skills who is prepared for employment,

entrepreneurship, middle-level skill development, and higher education after

completing Grade 12." One of the most significant problems and obstacles

that a student faces during their academic career is career choice. It entails

the exchange of numerous intricately linked components. According to

Nyamwange (2016), a student's current situation, gifts, abilities, and scholarly

achievements all have an impact on career choice. It is a difficult task; it

entails a lengthy decision-making process. Students must consider a variety

of factors, particularly, Personal, Peers, Family, and Grades, which could

greatly influence students' decision in selecting a strand that is best for them.

Korir (2012) stated that a career choice is a difficult decision for

students because it determines the type of profession they want to pursue in

5
life. Students face difficulties in matching their career choices to their abilities

and academic performance as they attempt to make career decisions.

Factors Affecting Strand Selection

According to Kerka (2010), personality, interest, self-concept, cultural

identity, globalization, socialization, role model, social support, and available

resources such as information and finances all influence career choice.

According to Hewitt (2011), most people are influenced by the career that

their parents prefer, others follow the career that their educational choices

have opened up for them, some choose to follow their passion regardless of

how much or little it will pay them, and others choose the career that pays

well. In this study the researchers only include the factors that they think is

relevant and timely for the respondents of this study, the factors are the

following:

Personality

According to an article published by Adecco (2015), a subsidiary of the

same-named Swiss multinational human resource consulting firm, it is

worthwhile to determine what type of worker an individual is, with an

increasing number of employers utilizing personality and psychometric testing

procedures to analyze the employee's attributes beyond qualifications. The

article also states that "choosing a job to which an individual is inherently

suited - rather than simply convincing the interviewer that he/she is interested

in the position - will make him/her a happier, more productive employee."

Peers

6
According to Pummel, Harwood, and Lavallee (2010), the external

influences that influence an individual's career choice are also influenced by

significant others through social support from peers. People around you can

make a big difference in your decision-making process. Friends can have an

impact on an individual's career choice. Individual interests may be influenced

by peers because one wishes to be with them in fulfilling dreams or pursuing

a specific career. Classmates, even if they do not always correspond with the

peer group of leisure-time friends, play an important role in the formation of a

student's achievement, related beliefs, and values.

Family

According to Frank (2017), decision-making is an essential and

ongoing part of the career development experience, influencing a variety of

outcomes and dictating how successful and satisfying the overall career

experience will be for the individual. Given the importance of decision-making,

search and staffing professionals must have a reasonable understanding of

how it affects candidate behavior.

Although research on family influences on career choices has

increased rapidly in recent years, understanding of family influences on career

choices remains limited. Much of the research on family influence focuses on

individual parents' careers, such as mothers or fathers influencing their

children to pursue a particular career. This study looks at the influence of

family members on career choices, including parents, siblings, and extended

family members. A child's first interactions with people occur within its own

home among members of its family.

7
According to Bollu-steve (2013) family members include parents,

siblings, and relatives A child is influenced by a variety of family-related

factors, including the parents' marital relationship, the family's socioeconomic

status, and the atmosphere of the home (whether parents are warm or cold).

The family dynamics, whether friendly or hostile, the environmental condition,

the occupational status of the parents, and the number of siblings in the family

all play a role in the students' career readiness. Several studies show that

parental involvement has an impact on senior high school students.

Grades

In a study of Olaleye Victoria (2018) she stated the in Kenya, every

secondary school student (SSS) makes their career choice before sitting for

West African Examination Council (WAEC). The result of this final

examination determining who joins University since admission into careers

are determined by grades obtained from it. When these students graduate

from the universities, some of them enter into occupations that are totally

different from the ones they had chosen and training for. Some high school

students take grades into great consideration as Academic Tracks requires

higher intellectual capacity. In Fatima National High School, Academic Tracks

have the highest learners every enrollment. The researchers have

encountered many students who fears STEM Strand as it is more on

mathematics, which makes them realize that grades are one of the factors

that could affect the strand selection among the students inside the school.

Senior High School Strands

8
According to Alexis (2018), STEM is intended to prepare students who

express a strong desire to pursue college degrees in Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Senior high school students will be

exposed to learning activities that will hone their knowledge and skills in

analyzing data, comprehending real-world implications, and conducting

research. Accountancy, Business, and Management Strand—or ABM strand

—seeks to prepare the young business leaders of tomorrow, according to

CIIT College of Arts and Technology (2018). The ABM strand prepares

students for business-related college degrees. It teaches the fundamentals of

financial management, accounting, and business operations. The programs in

this strand aim to instill critical skills required for success in future careers and

businesses. According to Systems Plus College Foundation (2018), the

Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand provides students with a

broad range of disciplines to use in the investigation and inquiry of human

situations by studying its behavior and social changes using empirical,

analytical, and critical method techniques. HUMSS will provide every learner

with a deeper understanding of culture, politics, literature, arts, and society -

how the complexities of these factors are appreciated during pressing issues

concerning them. Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) strand, according to

North Central Technical College (2018), provides a solid foundation in

process-specific production welding technology. The program is designed to

prepare students for entry-level positions in the production welding and metal

fabrication industries. Computer System Servicing (CSS), according to

Negros College and Senior High School, is a vocational program that teaches

students how to install, configure, and maintain computer systems and

9
networks. It teaches students how to diagnose and troubleshoot computer

systems, as well as how to perform computer operations. Plumbing is a senior

high School Strand that teaches students how to repair, manipulate, and

renovate water system. Foods and Beverages Services is a vocational

program that teaches students about how foods are being processed, and

etiquettes food services. Lastly, Hair Dressing, is a Senior High School Strand

that teaches students practical works that involves the hair.

In Fatima National High School, only the following strands are

available. Students could choose either of the following according to their

want.

Senior High School Strands as Career Guidance

Senior High School Strands are considered to be a preparation for

college courses. Students tends to choose the strand that is aligned with their

college courses, students who aims to be in the medical field or Engineering

in college, takes STEM Strand in Senior High School, those who want to

pursue Education, takes HUMSS Strand, Accounting and Business

Administration takes ABM Strand in Senior High School, these are for those

who aims to be on an Academic Track. Senior High School also has

Technical Vocational Livelihood (TVL) Tracks, these are educational tracks

that focuses more on practical works, strands that prepares them for a much

intense practical field.

According to the Republic Act No. 11206 also known as the Secondary

Career Guidance and Counseling Act of 2019 aims to: (a) to institutionalize

career guidance and counseling program for students in all public and private

10
secondary schools nationwide in order to provide them with proper direction in

pursuing subsequent tertiary education; (b) to equip secondary education

students with the capability to make educated career decisions and expose

them to relevant labor markets; and (c) to ensure that graduates of tertiary

education meet the requirements of the government, industry, and the

economy. In this study, Senior High School Strands are seen as Career

Guidance, for it prepares students in the future college courses they will take.

Foreign Studies

The study of Olaleye Victoria (2018) the secondary school student’s

career choice in Nigeria is examined to be influenced by gender, home

background and student learning outcome. She also stated the extent of the

problems and proffer suggestions that will help the students in making

valuable and meaningful choice of career rather than making a wrong choice

determined outside their interest, capability and talent and was concluded

helpful to the students. This result is consistent with the finding of Jemima

Khamadi, Dr. Michael Bowen, and Dr. Rebeca Olapido (2011). They found out

how the Age, Influence (parents, peers, and teachers), Self-Concept, and

personality affect the career choice undergraduate students of Daystar

University. To add more, the study of Bodhe-Surally Kaneez and Kisto Medha

(2018), “Factors Influencing Grade 10 students’ Career Choice in Mauritius”

states that factors affecting students’ career choice can be grouped under

three categories. The first group encompasses environment factors, followed

by personality factors and lastly opportunity factors. Thus, from the findings,

11
some recommendations were made to enable students to make informed

decisions.

Local Studies

The study of Angel Benitez and Angeline Cabeltis (2018) the

researcher gets 200 grade 10 junior high school students of Victorino Mapa

High School and conducted a survey that indicates how Interpersonal and

Environmental factor affects the students’ preferred strand in senior high

school. The study of Vallente, Cleo Bernadette (2016) entitled “Factors

Influencing Student’s Choice for a Senior High School Academic Track” aimed

to answer how the following factors could influence the students choice for

senior high school academic track: Academic Experience, Educational

Aspiration/ Expectation, Advice of Others, Friends/ Peer Influence; and Family

Background, and gained an answer that Educational Aspiration/Expectation

was the main factor that influences their decision in choosing a strand.

Moreover, the study of John Michael Sasan (2022) about the factors affecting

strand selection among grade 10 students with factors such as Personal

Interest, Family Influence, Peer Influence, Job Opportunities, and Financial

Condition. The study concludes that the importance of selecting a track for

students in grade 10 cannot be overstated. According to the findings, the

various factors that influence students' choices are adaptable regardless of

age, gender, or family wealth. Students who pursue their dreams take their

abilities and knowledge into account.

Conceptual Framework

12
In this study, the independent variable is the factors affecting the

decision of the students and the dependent variable is the selection of strand

in Senior High School, since the aim of this study is to determine the Factors

METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the methods of research used during the

course of study. It discusses the research design, research respondents,

research instrument, data gathering procedure, and statistical treatment.

Research Design

This study used a descriptive-correlational method of research. It

aimed to determine the factors affecting the strand selection of grade 10 BEC

students of Fatima National High School. Descriptive-correlational statistical is

a method to measure a relationship between two or more variables gives an

indication of how one variable may predict another. However, correlation does

not imply causation; that is, simply because two events are in some way

related does not mean that one necessarily causes the other.

Research Respondents

The study only includes the twenty-one (21) sections of Grade 10 Basic

Education Curriculum of Fatima National High School enrolled into school

15
year 2022-2023. Slovin’s formula will be used to get the number of

respondents.

Research Instruments

In this study the researchers utilized the Likert Type questionnaire, it is

a 5- point questionnaire that has the principle of measuring attitudes by asking

people to respond to a series of statements abouts a topic, in terms of the

extent to which they agree with them, and so tapping into cognitive and

affective components of attitudes. Likert type or frequencies scales was used

and opted to measure someone’s attitudes or behaviors, a Likert scale is one

of the most popular (and reliable) ways to do so. A Likert scale measures

attitudes and behaviors using answer choices that range from one extreme to

another. In this study, it is ranging from Strongly Agree (5) to Strongly

Disagree (1) to allow the researcher to uncover degrees of opinion.

Weighted Mean Description

4.50 – 5.00 Strongly Agree

3.50 – 4.49 Agree

2.50 – 3.49 Somewhat Agree

1.50 – 2.49 Disagree

1.00 – 1.40 Strongly Disagree

Table 1. Research Instruments

Data Gathering Procedure

16
The data presented by the researchers were obtained through the use

of questionnaires. The questionnaires were divided into two parts. Part I was

the survey questions that evaluates the factors affecting personal, peers,

family, and grades of the students which consists of five (3) questions per

factors, which makes it twenty (12) questions in Part I, and Part II is the table

that shows the Academic Track and Technical Vocational Livelihood Track.

The researcher will manage to reproduce the questionnaire that accords with

the number of the respondents. The researchers will obtain permissions from

the advisers to administer the research instrument and to personally distribute

the questionnaires for a hundred percent guarantee of returning the answered

questionnaires. The respondent’s information will be classified as confidential

and the data that will be gathered will be useful.

Statistical Treatment

To determine the factors affecting strand selection of grade 10

students, frequency distribution and weighted mean were used.

To determine the strand the that the respondents will choose,

frequency distribution and weighted mean were used.

Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to determine the

relationship between the factors and the strand selection of grade 10 BEC

students in Fatima National High School.
