CAMARINES NORTE

I. OVERVIEW

A. BRIEF HISTORY

Camarines Norte is a Philippine province in the Bicol Region of Luzon. Daet is the province's
capital, and it borders Quezon to the west and Camarines Sur to the south.

Camarines Norte is sandwiched between two regional languages, Tagalog and Bicol. It is
notable for being a crossroads of Tagalog and Bicol cultures. According to the most recent
census, there are more Tagalog speakers in Camarines Norte than Bicol speakers. Because it
provides a wider corridor for Camarines Norte to have a larger cultural base, this linguistic
situation lends itself to greater cultural cohesion with Bicolanos and Tagalog.

Camarines Norte is known for its breathtaking beaches, majestic waterfalls, crystalline rivers,
verdant and lush mountains, historic churches and shrines, vastly rich cultural heritage,
distinct cuisines, the World's First Ever Rizal Monument, and friendly and good-natured
people. It's known as the Land of Gold and Golden Opportunities.

Camarines is named after the Spanish word camarin, which means rice granary or warehouse.
In 1829, Camarines was divided into Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur. In 1854, they
merged as Ambos Camarines, but split again in 1857. In 1893, the North and South were
reunited once more. The Act was passed by the Philippine Legislature on March 10, 1917.
2711, granting the governor general the authority to divide the province into Camarines Norte
and Camarines Sur.
