Chapter : 12 Daedalus and Icarus

A. Answer the following questions.

1. Daedalus was a famous inventor and craftsman during the reign of King Minos in Greece.

2. Daedalus became more and more popular and King Minos became greedy. So, he thought that
Daedalus should only work for him and hence confined him and his son Icarus to a cave above the
sea,

3. Icarus wanted freedom from the cave. So, Daedalus decided to make wings so that they could fly.
For this he used some strips of leather, tubes of metal and twigs to make the frame of the wings. He
coated the wings with wax.

4. Daedalus advised his son not to fly too close to the sun or else the wings would melt. He should
also not fly too close to water as the wings would get wet from the heavy splashes of water.

5. Icarus did not pay attention to his father's advice. He flew higher and higher and closer and closer
to the sun, the wax melted and started dripping down his shoulders. Icarus realized that it was too
late, and he fell deep into the sea and drowned.

6. Daedalus named the island in which they lived, in the memory of his son. He called the part of the
sea where his son had drowned Icarian Sea.

B. Answer the following questions with reference to context.

(c) Icarus no longer wanted to remain confined in the cave. He hated the King and the cave and
wanted to leave that place.
