RITE OF RECONCILIATION
Exhortation: Romans 6: 1 – 14

GENERAL CONFESSION OF SINS

The deacon or another minister invites all to kneel or bow, and to join in saying a general
formula for confession (for example I confess to almighty God). Then they stand and say a
litany or sing an appropriate song. The Lord’s Prayer is always added at the end.

My brothers and sisters, confess your sins and

pray for each other, that you may be healed.
All say:

I confess to almighty God,

and to you my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do:
and I asked blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me the Lord our God.
May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive our
sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
A.: Amen.

PENITENTIAL PRAYER OF THE PRESIDENT

Blessed are you Lord,

our Father, Holy God, Eternal King,
who, through your great goodness and endless mercy,
have shown your infinite love for us
in the body of your Son Jesus,
broken and crucified for our sins.
I, your unworthy servant,
called to preside today over this assembly,
ask your forgiveness and lean on your generosity,
knowing that the kindness
you have shown in your Son
reveals your compassion for the sinner,
especially when he comes to you
not hiding his faults
but confessing them with sincere sorrow.
Thus, it is written:
“He who hides his sin doesn’t grow in holiness;
but he who confesses and abandons his sins to you,
shall obtain mercy.”
Blessed are you who have shown your love for us
by concealing our sins
in the cross of your Son.
Blessed are you who raised Christ
for our justification.
Full of confidence in your great mercy,
today we declare ourselves sinners
in front of you and your Church.

5
It is true that we have been men of insolence,
flattery and violence.

We have become impure by our base passions.

We have grumbled and rebelled
against your orders.
We have despised your commandments.
We have offended you.
We have been obstinate in evil.
We are guilty.

Have mercy on us!

Ass.: “Have mercy on us”.

It is true that many times

we have considered lightly what to you is important.

Lord,
you who are rich in mercy,
slow to anger,
forgive our faults
in the name of your beloved Son.

Receive our prayers.

Grant us a repentant heart and bring us back to you.

We ask this united to your Son Jesus Christ,

with the same words he taught us
so, we dare to say:
OR:
Let us now pray to God our Father in the words Christ gave us, and ask him for
his forgiveness and protection from all evil.)

Our Father
6
All say together:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us ;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

(The priest can conclude with the follow prayer

Lord,
draw near to your servants
who in the presence of your Church
confess that they are sinners.
Through the ministry of the Church
free them from all sin
so that renewed in spirit
they may give you thankful praise.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
A.: Amen)

7
INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
(God, the Father of mercies,
through the death and resurrection of his
Son has reconciled the world to himself
and sent the Holy Spirit among us
for the forgiveness of sins;
through the ministry of the Church
may God give you pardon and peace,
and I absolve you from your sins
in the name of the Father, and the Son,
and the Holy Spirit.)

CONCLUDING PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

P. : The Lord be with you

A.:AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT

P.: Lift up your hearts

A.: WE LIFT THEM UP TO THE LORD

P. : Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

A.: IT IS RIGHT AND JUST. (X2)

8
P.: It is truly right and just
our duty and our salvation
to give thanks always and everywhere
almighty and merciful God.
How wonderfully you created man,
and still more wonderfully you remade him;
you do not abandon the sinner
but seek him out with a father's love.
You sent your Son into the world
to destroy sin and death by his passion
and to restore life and joy
by his resurrection.
You sent the Holy Spirit into our hearts
to make us your children and heirs of your kingdom;
You constantly renew our spirit
in the sacraments of your redeeming love,
freeing us from slavery to sin
and transforming us into the likeness
of your beloved Son

A. FREEING US FROM SLAVERY TO SIN

AND TRANSFORMING US INTO THE LIKENESS
OF YOUR BELOVED SON.

P. We praise and bless your Name

and we give thanks for the marvels of your mercy;
and with the assembly of the angels and saints
we sing the hymn of your glory
