LESSON 11:
ٮ ﮳ﺴﻢ اﻟﻠّٰﮧ اﻟﺮﺣٰﻤﻦ اﻟﺮﺣٮ ﮵ﻢ
*ABU HURAIRAH (RA)*
His name was Abdu Shams(worshipper of the Sun). Prophet ()ﷺ
changed his name to Abdur-Rahman(the worshipper of Allah).
He was extremely fond of his pet kitten and from there he was
called Abu Hurairah by his friends (Father of cats)
ACCEPTANCE OF ISLAM
At-Tufayl ibn Amr RA the leader of Daws tribe to which Abu Hurairah
belonged, had met Prophet( )ﷺand accepted Islam in the early
stages. When at-Tufayl RA returned to his village after becoming a
Muslim, Abu Hurairah RA was one of the first to respond to his call to
Islam.
After the battle of Khyber, At-Tufayl RA came to Madinah and Abu
Hurairah RA accompanied him.
He RA was very poor. One day he was very hungry and had not
eaten for many days. On his way he RA met Abu Bakr RA. He RA
stopped him and asked him a question hoping Abu Bakr RA would invite
him to his house. But that did not happen.
Then he RA met Umar RA and same thing happened. Then he met
Prophet( )ﷺand Prophet( )ﷺinvited him to his house. There was
some milk in a container. Abu Hurairah RA wished that he would be
asked to drink the milk.
But Prophet( )ﷺtold him to go out and call the people of Suhfa.
They came and the container was passed around, until everyone had
drank the milk. Abu Hurairah RA kept waiting for his turn. Then the
container was given to him and he drank to his heart's content. He RA
said that it was a miracle as there was only a little milk and it was
enough for everyone.
MEMORIZING HADITHS
Abu Hurairah RA met Prophet( )ﷺonly 4 years before Prophet's
( )ﷺdeath but he RA had memorized so many haidhths that he said
that the only person who could compete with him in memorization of
hadith is Abdullah ibn Amr RA as he could write and Abu Hurairah RA
couldn't write.
People asked him, " How were you able to memorize so many
hadiths in few years. " He said that it was a gift of Allah and his
Messenger ﷺ. one day Prophet( )ﷺtold the people " Who will lay
his clothing so that everyone can sit and listen to what I say and Allah
would grant him such a memory that he will not forget whatever I have
said. "
Abu Hurairah RA was the first to lay his clothing.
Zayd ibn Thabit RA reported: "While Abu Hurairah and I and another
friend of mine were in the Masjid praying to Allah, Prophet( )ﷺcame
and sat among us. We became silent and he said: "Carry on with what
you were doing." So my friend and I made a dua to Allah before Abu
Hurairah did and the Prophet( )ﷺbegan to say Ameen to our dua.
"Then Abu Hurairah RA made a supplication saying: "O Lord, I ask
You for what my two companions have asked and I ask You for
knowledge which will not be forgotten." The Prophet()ﷺ, said:
'Ameen.' "We then said: 'And we ask Allah for knowledge which will not
be forgotten, and the Prophet( )ﷺreplied: 'He has preceded you, in
this."
Once Marwan ibn al-Hakam(Governor of Madinah) wanted to test
Abu Hurairah's RA power of memory. He sat with him in one room and
behind a curtain he placed a scribe, unknown to Abu Hurairah RA and
ordered him to write down whatever Abu Hurairah RA said. A year later,
Marwan called Abu Hurairah RA again and asked him to recall the same
hadith which the scribe had recorded. It was found that he had
forgotten not a single word.
CONSTANT COMPANION
Abu Hurairah RA would constantly stay with Prophet ( )ﷺwithout
even blinking his eyes.
He RA used to work for a women and only got food in return for it
and he didn't need anything else. He RA stayed with Prophet( )ﷺin
Madinah and went with him on journeys and expeditions.
HIS MOTHER
Abu Hurairah's RA mother was still a mushrik. He longed, and
prayed, for her to become a Muslim but she adamantly refused.
One day, he RA invited her to have faith in God alone and follow His
Prophet( )ﷺbut she uttered some words about Prophet( )ﷺwhich
saddened him greatly.
With tears in his eyes, he went to Prophet( )ﷺand told him what
had happened. He asked Prophet( )ﷺto make dua for his mother so
that she may turn to Islam. Prophet( )ﷺmade dua for his mother then
and there.
When Abu Hurairah RA reached home happily, he found that his
mother had taken a fresh bath and accepted Islam.
He RA respected his mother so much that whenever he passed by
her room, he would stand at the door of her room and say: "As-Salaamu
Alaykum, Yaa Ummataah, Wa Rahrnatullahi Wa Barakatuhu". She would
reply: "Wa alayka-Assalaam, Yaa Bunayya, Wa Rahmatullahi Wa
Barakatuhu"
Often, he RA would also say: "May Allah have mercy on you as you
cared for me when I was small," and she would reply: "May Allah have
mercy on you as you delivered me from error when I was old."
VOLUNTARY PRAYERS
He RA would pray the first third of the night and then he would wake
up his wife and she would pray the second third of the night and then
she would again wake him up and he would pray the last third of the
night so that there was someone in his house who would pray the entire
night.
One day Marwan ibn al-Hakam sent 100 dinars to Abu Hurairah RA
to test him.( Since it was reputed that he never slept with extra money
in his house) Next day he went to Abu Hurairah RA and told that he
sent that money by mistake and asked him for the money. Abu Hurairah
RA told that he had given that money to poor on the same day itself but
he can deduct it from his salary.
HIS ADVICE TO PEOPLE
One day he RA saw two men walking together, one older than the
other. He RA asked the younger one: "What is this man to you?" "My
father," the person replied. "Don't call him by his name. Don't walk in
front of him and don't sit before him," advised Abu Hurairah RA.
One day he passed through the market of Madinah and saw people
engrossed in the business.
"How feeble are you, O people of Madinah!" he said. "The inheritance of
the Prophet()ﷺ, is being distributed and you remain here! " "Where is
this, O Abu Hurairah?" they asked. "In the Masjid," he replied.
Quickly they left. Abu Hurairah RA waited until they returned. When
they saw him, they said: "O Abu Hurairah RA, we went to the Masjid and
we did not see anything being distributed." "What did you see in the
Masjid?" he asked. They said "We saw some people performing Salat,
some people reading the Quran and some people discussing about
what is halal and what is haram." He replied that was the inheritance of
Prophet()ﷺ.
CLOSE TO HIS DEATH
When he RA was very ill, Marwan ibn al-Hakam went to see him.
Abu Hurairah RA was making dua saying," Oh Allah, I love to meet you,
but I pray that you love to meet me too ". He passed away when he was

from among the flutes left behind by the people of Dawood AS."
