Catnip Ball

This document provides instructions for crocheting a catnip ball toy in two versions - one using UK terminology and one using US terminology. The ball is made using DK yarn and a 2.5mm crochet hook. It is worked in continuous rounds, starting with a magic ring and increasing until round 10, then decreasing until the last round where the stitches are joined and the ball is stuffed with catnip and yarn ends are woven in. The finished ball is approximately 2 inches in diameter.

Catnip ball. UK terminology.

There are 2 pages to this pattern. Page one is UK terminology and page two is the same pattern in US terminology. I'd
love to see your pictures of cats playing with your makes so please do feel free to inbox me pictures!
N.B. The ball is designed to be large enough not to be a choking hazard but since we are talking about our lovely feline
friends please do use your own judgement.

Gauge/finished size:
Finished ball is approximately 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter.

Materials:
DK yarn of your choice. I used Hayfield bonus DK in spearmint (shade 0727)
2.5mm crochet hook/ B or C size according to preference/crochet style
Catnip (a pinch or 3 depending on preference)
Small amount of toy stuffing
Stitch marker to mark start or end of the round to suit you.
Needle to weave end(s) in
Scissors

Abbreviations:
Pattern uses UK terminology and is done in continuous/spiral rounds.
MR = magic ring
dc = double crochet
dc2tog = double crochet 2 st together (decrease)
ss = slip stitch
st = stitch(es)
rep = repeat

Pattern:
R1 – MR and 6 dc into MR.
R2 – 2dc into each stitch (12 st)
R3 – *1dc into 1st st then 2 dc in 2nd st *. Rep * to * all round (18 st)
R4 – *1dc into 1st st, 1dc in 2nd st and 2dc in 3rd st*. Rep * to * all round (24 st)
R5 – *1dc into 1st st, 1dc in 2nd st, 1dc in 3rd st and 2dc in 4th st*. Rep * to * all round (30 st)
R6 to R10 – dc all around
optional: you may choose to weave in the end inside the ball at this point if you wish.
R11 – *1dc into 1st st, 1dc into 2nd st, 1dc into 3rd st, dc2tog using next 2 st*. Rep * to * all round (24 st)
R12 – *1dc into 1st st, 1dc into 2nd st, dc2tog using next 2 st*. Rep * to * all round (18 st)
start stuffing here. I like to put a small amount of stuffing into the ball and use a finger to create a well into
which I add a few pinches of catnip. Then I add more stuffing. See picture above.
R13 – *1dc into 1st st, dc2tog using next 2 st*. Rep * to * all round (12 st)
add more stuffing here if required
R14 – dc2tog all around (6 st) ss into next st and fasten off. Weave in end
Give the ball a good squish at this point to even up the stuffing and catnip and also to shape it a little.
