recommendations for use are not followed.
For each use case of the system, it is recommended to wear adapted
personnal protective equipment (safety shoes, glasses, gloves...).

Disconnect the system from its power source and call in qualified
personnel in the following cases:
• The power cable or plug is damaged or worn.
• Liquid has been spilled on the system.
• The system has been exposed to rain or water.
• The printer is not functioning correctly although the user has

5 Instruction manual
Safety - Installation

■■ Automatic Startup
Do not allow an automatic packaging machine startup after a Model
5200/5400 reset. The Model 5200/5400 end user is responsible for
configuring the software and installing the status output signal option
in a way that requires the operator to manually restart the packaging
machine after a Model 5200/5400 condition has been cleared. Any
deviation from this method is unsafe and any consequences shall be
under the entire responsibility of the user.

■■ Use
The printer is designed for drop-on-demand ink jet printing for
industrial package coding. Any other use of the printer is prohibited,
and any consequences shall be under the entire responsibility of the
user.

■■ Handling
A printhead at operating temperature must not be moved. To prevent
printhead damage, the hot printhead must first be cooled down using
the Shutdown feature and then powered off before being moved.
Weight of print station (not including umbilical lines):
Model 5200: Approx. 63kg (140 lb)
Model 5400: Approx. 77kg (170 lb)
Printhead: Approx. 2.1kg (4.6 lb)
Regarding the system weight, handling tasks have to be performed
by more than one operator.

Instruction manual 6

7 Instruction manual
Safety - Installation

■■ Installation requirements
Installation must be performed without fail by a Markem-Imaje
technicians team. Any person modifying the installation shall be
wholly liable for such modification.
The printer must be installed in accordance with applicable
requirements.
The Model 5200 can have up to two printheads.
The Model 5400 can have up to four printheads.

Determine a location for the printer that:

• Provides access to the front and rear of the enclosure,
including a minimum of 15cm (6”) clearance in the rear for
adequate cooling ventilation.
• Positions the printhead(s) within 3m (10’) of the enclosure.
• Provides sturdy, level floor space.
• Meets environmental and electrical specifications.

Ensure the electrical requirements are satisfied:

• The printer must be connected to a 50–60Hz, single-phase
AC power supply electricity network, 1450W maximum (Model
5200) or 2530W maximum (Model 5400), with earth ground
using the cable supplied with the printer.
• The end user is responsible for supplying an appropriate plug
or wiring to a terminal block on the AC power cord.
• The AC voltage configuration must be verified or changed to
match the end user’s AC voltage service.
• For electrical characteristics, see the Serial/I.D./Rating Label
on the rear of the enclosure, near the power switch.
