PROCEDURE CHECKLIST

KANGAROO MOTHER CARE METHOD

Instruction: Below is the grading scale which will be used in rating your performance.
5 - Excellent - 95-100
4 - Very Satisfactory - 88-94
3 - Satisfactory - 82-87
2 - Fair - 76-81
1 - Needs Practice - 70-75

Definition: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) has been scientifically proven to be a cost-
efficient intervention in saving newborn lives, particularly for the PT/LBW population.
KMC Method is to avoid disrupting the mother-immature infant dyad by placing mother
and infant in the least stressful position possible and supporting the transition to extra
uterine life.

Materials:
 Front open gown
 Kangaroo binders “kangacarrier”
 Soft clean cotton fabric

Special Considerations (Position providers must be free of the following conditions):

• Contagious rash or skin lesions


• Fever
• Non controlled epilepsy
• Not controlled mental illness
• Morbid obesity
• Tired mother or mother under sedative drugs or in the recovery process from
general anesthesia (the supervision of the mother must not be delegated to the
family).

Either the health care worker or any family
members should do the following thing to
advice by supporting the newborns buttocks
and head
6. Place the newborn between the mother’s
bare breast in an upright position.
7. Bend the newborn’s hip slightly outward,
keeping the newborn’s arm above the
mother’s breast, legs below the mothers
breast and abdomen on chest of the mother.
8. Turn the newborn’s head to one side,
slightly extended or in a slightly upturned
position to help ease his breathing and to
allow eye-to-eye contact between mother and
newborn.
9. Before wrapping with a cloth, cover the
newborns with a blanket if the room is cold.
Wrap the cloth around the newborns and
mother’s chest and abdomen. Make sure the
center of the cloth is on the newborns and
should pass the armpits of the mother cross at
the back.
10. Bring the edges of the cloth in the front.
11. Secure the edges of the cloth with a safe
knot at newborns bottom.
Removing wrap cloth
1. Advice mother to sit upright position
2. Start untying the knot with one hand and
support the newborns bottom with the
other hand on the outside of wrap cloth
3. Loosen the wrap cloth same hand which
was used for untying the knot.
4. Shift the hand under the cloth supporting
the newborns buttocks and use the other
hand support from the outside of the

cloth.
5. Lift the newborns up and free hold from
wrap cloth. Hold the newborns head and
bottom.
Elastic support/binder
1. Adjust the edge of elastic support to
support the newborns head and tilt the
newborns head lightly to breath freely
2. Advice to make eye to eye contact.
3. Check the elastic support, note that it
should not too loose or too tight
4. Record.
