Sangkuriang
There lived a mother with her child in a village
Once upon a times, there lived a mother named Dayang Sumbi who lived with her son named
Sangkuriang. Both of them live in a village with their beloved dog, Tumang. Before living alone with
her son, Dayang Sumbi married the incarnation of a god who had been cursed to become an animal
and banished to earth. Without them realizing it, the three of them actually lived with Dayang
Sumbi's husband and Sangkuriang's father who had turned into the cursed dog earlier. After spending
time with his son, Sangkuriang grew into a young man with a charming face and a strong and strong
body. Sangkuriang grew up to be a brave boy who loved hunting, he was always accompanied by
Tumang who was the incarnation of a dog from his biological father.
Dayang Sumbi's wrath because of Sangkuriang's
One day, Dayang Sumbi asked Sangkuriang to find her a deer because her mother wanted to
eat the liver of the deer at that time. Sangkuriang, accompanied by Tumang, hunted into the forest to
find an antelope according to Dayang Sumbi's wishes. While in the forest, Sangkuriang saw a deer
grazing behind a bush. Sangkuriang ordered Tumang to chase the deer. However, a strange thing
happened to his pet dog, the usually obedient Tumang now refused Sangkuriang's order to chase the
deer. Sangkuriang was angry and said, "If you still do not obey my orders, I will surely kill you." The
threat was ignored by Tumang which made Sangkuriang even more annoyed and angry. Sangkuriang

finally killed Tumang and took the dog's heart to give it to Dayang Sumbi as a substitute for the deer
that he didn't manage to get. Unbeknownst to Dayang Sumbi, it turned out that the heart that her son
gave her was that of her husband who had been killed by their own child. Dayang Sumbi only found
out after cooking and eating the liver. How angry Dayang Sumbi was when she learned that it was
Tumang's heart that Sangkuriang had given her. Dayang Sumbi then grabbed a dipper made of
coconut shell and hit Sangkuriang on the head while saying the truth, "Tumang is your papa,
Sangkuriang!" Receiving treatment from Dayang Sumbi like that, Sangkuriang was angry and hurt.
He did not want his mother to be like that to him. Sangkuriang thought that Dayang Sumbi loved
Tumang more than him. So without saying goodbye, Sangkuriang went to wander eastward.
Dayang Sumbi was surprised after knowing that man who was going to marry her was his own
son
Before getting married, Sangkuriang, who changed his name to Jaka, intended to go hunting in
the forest. Dayang Sumbi also helped Jaka, her future husband, to wear a head covering. How
shocked Dayang Sumbi was when she saw the wound on her future husband's head. The wound
reminded him of his son who had left him long ago. She was very sure that this dashing man who
would marry her was her son Sangkuriang. Seeing the scar earlier, Dayang Sumbi then told the man
that she was Dayang Sumbi, the biological parents of Sangkuriang who had been missing for years.
However, Sangkuriang, who had been blinded by lust, did not care about Dayang Sumbi's
explanation and still insisted on marrying her.
Dayang Sumbi made a request when proposed by Sangkuriang, with a condition

Sangkuriang, who was still determined to marry Dayang Sumbi, then proposed to marry the
woman. To stop the marriage, Dayang Sumbi also made a request as a condition for accepting
Sangkuriang's proposal. Dayang Sumbi made a very difficult request, asking Sangkuriang to build a
dam on the Citarum river and have a large boat in the lake. However, what made the request difficult
was Dayang Sumbi's words, "Before dawn, you must complete my two requests." Without hesitation,
Sangkuriang agreed to Dayang Sumbi's request, "Okay, I will fulfill your request." Sangkuriang
started his action to make a boat by cutting down a big tree. While the branches and tree branches
needed were piled up until one day it turned into Mount Burangrang. Sangkuriang made a big boat.
After that, the powerful and powerful man summoned the spirits to help stem the swift flow of the
Citarum river to make a lake according to Dayang Sumbi's request.
Sangkuriang was so angry that he overturned his own boat
Everything that Sangkuriang did then made Dayang Sumbi feel anxious because her work
would soon be finished before another day. Dayang Sumbi also looked for a way to thwart the
wedding plans with her own biological child by asking the gods for help. After praying, Dayang
Sumbi was instructed to spread the boeh rarang (woven white cloth). After that Dayang Sumbi went
around and forced the rooster to crow while it was still night. Hearing the rooster's voice, the genies
who helped Sangkuriang's work were very scared when they learned that dawn had arrived. They
then disappeared in all directions and left Sangkuriang with his work unfinished.

Of course, this made Sangkuriang furious because he felt cheated by his future wife.
Sangkuriang believed that the real dawn had not yet arrived and there was still time for him to
complete the lake. Sangkuriang was then angry by breaking down the dam at Sanghyang Tikoro,
then he threw the Citarum river to the east so that it transformed into Mount Manglayang. The water
that originally filled the lake receded. Sangkuriang then with his magic power kicked the boat that he
had made far away and fell face down until it transformed into a mountain which was later called
Mount Tangkuban Perahu. Still in great anger, Sangkuriang knew that all of this was Dayang
Sumbi's ploy to thwart his marriage to her. The anger that continued to overflow made Sangkuriang
chase Dayang Sumbi who was scared until she disappeared on a hill. In addition to the boat that
transformed into Mount Tangkuban Perahu, the hill where Dayang Sumbi disappeared was also
transformed into Mount Putri. Meanwhile, Sangkuriang, who failed to find Dayang Sumbi, also
disappeared into the unseen world.
