Temperature of Freshly Mixed Hydraulic-
Cement Concrete
AASHTO Designation: T 309M/T 309-05
ASTM Designation: C 1064/C 1064M-04
1, The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard.
2. All references to ASTM standards contained in ASTM C 1064/C 1064M-04, listed in the
following table, shall be replaced with the comesponding AASHTO standard.

3. Replace Sections 4.2 and 4.4 of ASTM C 1064/C 1064M-04 with the following:
4.2 Temperature Measuring Device —The temperature measuring device shall be capable of
measuring the temperature ofthe freshly mixed concrete to £0.5*C (41°F) throughout the
entire temperature range likely to be encountered inthe fresh concrete, Liquid-in-glass
thermometers having @ range of -18 to 49°C (0 to 120°F) are satisfactory. Other thermometers
of the required accuracy, including the metal immersion type, are acceptable.
44 Reference Temperature Measuring Device—The reference temperature measuring device
shall bea liguid-in-glass thermometer readable to 0.2°C (0.5*F) that has been verified and
calibrated. The calibration certificate or report indicating conformance tothe requirements of
ASTME 77 shall be available for inspection
4, Replace Section 5 of ASTM C 1064/C 1064M-04 with the following:
5. Calibration of Temperature Measuring Device
5.1 Each temperature measuring device used for determining temperature of freshly mixed
concrete shall be calibrated annually, or whenever there is a question of accuracy. This
calibration shall be performed by comparing the readings on the temperature measuring
device at two temperatures at least 15°C (27°F) apart.

1. Scope*
1.1. This test method covers the determination of tempera-
lure of freshly mixed hydraulic-cement conerete.
1.2 The values stated in inch-pound or SI units sre to be
regarded separately as standard. Within the text, ST units are
shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not
exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used inde-
pendent ofthe other. Combining values from the two systems
‘may result in nonconformance with the specification,
1.3 The text ofthis standard references notes and footnotes
that provide explanatory information. These notes and foot-
notes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be
considered as requirements of this standard.
1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the
safety concems, if any, associated with its use. It is the
responsibiliy ofthe user of this standard to establish appro
Driate safety and health practices and determine the applica
bility of regulatory limitations prior to se. (Waraing-—Fresh
hydraulic cementitious mixtures are caustic and may cause
chemical burs to skin and tissue upon prolonged exposure)

3. Significance and Use
3.1 This test method provides a means for measuring the
‘temperature of freshly mixed concrete. It may be used to verify
conformance 10 a specified requirement for temperature of
‘concrete.

3.2 Concrete containing aggregate of ¢ nominal maximum
size gteater than 3 in, [75 mm] may require up to 20 min forthe
transfer of heat from aggregate to mortar. (See ACI Committee
207.1R Report’)
4. Apparatus
4.1 Container, shal be large enough to provide at least 3 in
[75 mm] of concrete i all directions around the sensor of the
temperature measuring device; concrete cover must also be at
least three times the nominal maximum size of the coarse
aggregate.
4.2 Temperature Measuring Device, shall be capable of
accurately measuring the temperature of the freshly mixed
concrete to =1°F [0:5°C throughout «range of 30°10 120°F
[0° to SO°C}, The design of the temperature measuring device
shall be sock that i allows 3 in. (75 mam] or more immersion
‘during operation.
43 Panial immersion liquid-in-gass thermometers (and
possibly other types) shall have a permanent mak to which the
device must be immersed without applying a comrecton factor.
44 Reference Temperature Measuring Device, shall be
readable and accurate to £0:5°F (0.2°C} at the verification
Point in 5.1. A certificate or report that verifies the accuracy
shall be available inthe laboratory for review. Accuracy of
liguid-in-gass reference temperature measuring devices shall
be vetted once. Verification of direet-eading resistance ref
erence temperature measuring. devices shall be performed
every twelve months, The certificate or report shall provide
documentation thatthe reference standard used in the verifi-
cation is traceable to the National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NISD)
5, Calibration of Temperature Measuring Device
5.1 Bach temperature measuring device used for determin-
‘ng temperature of freshly mixed concrete shall be calibrated
annually, or whenever there is a question of accuracy. This
