PROBLEM SOLVING. The following items cover the topic problem solving. Provide the
correct answer and explain. (4 items, 20 points)

Rubrics:
Explanation - 3 points
Answer - 2 points
TOTAL = 5 points

1. What figure will complete the pattern?

Answer: Letter B
Explanation: The figure in each segment has a similar shape, with the middle figure being
larger than the two on either side. The figure is shaded, alternating right and left. To
continue this pattern in the third segment, find a square, choosing choice b, which will
place the large square between the smaller ones, with the shading on the right.

2. Here are some words translated from an artificial language.

Migenlasan means wayboard
Lasanpoen means boardwalk
Cuopdansa means pullman
Which word would mean "walkway"?

Answer: Poenmigen
Explanation: Migen means way, Lasan means board, Poen means walk, Cuop means pull,
and lastly Dasan means man. If you combine Poen which means walk and Migen which
means way, we can get an answer of PEONMIGEN which mean “walkway”

3. Fact 1: Jessica has four children.

Fact 2: Two of the children have blue eyes and two of the children have brown eyes. Fact
3: Half of the children are girls.
If the first three statements are facts, which of the following statements must also be a fact?
I. At least one girl has blue eyes.
II. Two of the children are boys.
III. The boys have brown eyes

Answer: II. Two of the children are boys

Explanation: Because one-half of the four children are girls, therefore two of the children
are boys. There is no clear statement which of the children have blue or brown eyes.

4. Children are in pursuit of a dog whose leash has broken. James is directly behind the
dog. Ruby is behind James. Rachel is behind Ruby. Max is ahead of the dog walking
down the street in the opposite direction. As the children and dog pass, Max turns around
and joins the pursuit. He runs in behind Ruby. James runs faster and is alongside the dog
on the left. Ruby runs faster and is alongside the dog on the right. Which child is directly
behind the dog?

Answer: Max is directly behind the dog

Explanation: Max is now directly behind the dog after all the switches have been made,
while James is alongside the dog on the left, Ruby is alongside the dog on the right, and
Rachel is behind Max.
