imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i Service Guide

I. Product Overview
The imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i are part of Segment 4. The imageRUNNER
5000/6000/5000i offers up to 50 or 60 pages per-minute of digital copying and
network printing. The imageRUNNER 5000 is a standalone 50 cpm copier and
the imageRUNNER 6000 is a standalone 60 cpm copier with standard automatic
document feeding and copy functions such as Trayless Duplexing, Scan-Once-
Print-Many, Copy Reservation, Job Build, Different Size Originals, Two-Page
Separation, Department Management ID’s, Merge document and Confidential
Mail Boxes. For advanced in-line finishing, the optional Saddle Finisher-F2 for
saddle-stitch booklets may be added. The Saddle Finisher-F2 will automatically
place the pages in the correct order.

The imageRUNNER 5000i is a second-generation iP (imagePlatform) function

machine that comes standard with copy, print, and universal send functions that
offer up to 50 pages per-minute of digital copying and network printing.

As an ENERGY STAR™ Partner, Canon U.S.A., Inc. has determined that this product
meets the ENERGY STAR guidelines for energy efficiency.1
II. Design Features
A. Merge Document Mode
The Merge Document Mode can be used when there is a need to combine
multiple data from the PC. Merge Document Mode will combine data
created with different software by multiple users and can print as one
document. Data sent from the PC is sent and stored to a mailbox. The
Merge Document Mode will merge documents from different mailboxes as
well as documents that were previously stored in a box. Merge Document
Mode allows the user to combine documents, which have more than 100
originals, and print it out as one job. This mode is useful when there is a
need to combine PC data and copy originals from the DADF or Platen
Glass containing transparencies, small pieces of paper together or to
paste an image into a document and output as a simplex or duplex job.
The documents are merged in the order the user specifies. The names of
the printed documents are displayed as the name of the first document
and the number of the other documents contained in the job. In Merge
Document Mode the settings are cleared and the user can use the
“Change Print Setting” key to set the print attributes.
B. Job Build Mode
The Job Build Mode is used when the user wants to combine multiple
copy originals. If the user has more than 100 copy originals, Job Build
Mode will combine the originals and print as one document. This mode is
useful when there is a need to combine transparencies, paste small
pieces of paper together or paste an image into a document and output as
a simplex or duplex job. Job Build Mode can combine up to five different
copy originals from the DADF and platen glass.

1
If any of the options are installed, the printer may no longer be Energy Star compliant.

imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i Service Guide

C. Copy Reservation
Compared to the imageRUNNER 550/600 which can only select Copy A
or Copy B, the imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i can select up to five
different copy reservation jobs, decreasing the user wait time and
increasing productivity for the user.
D. Chapterization Mode
This added function to the “Cover/Sheet Insertion” enables the user to
program the imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i to automatically add
chapter pages to copy sets by printing only on one side of the page.
E. Saddle Stitch Mode
The optional Saddle Finisher-F2 can saddle stitch booklets in the same
manner as the imageRUNNER 550/600.
F. Different Size Originals
Different Size Originals enables the user to scan originals with the same
width, or different-size width together as one group. The following
different size originals can be fed: 11” X 17” and LGL, 11” x 17” and
LTRR, LGL and LTR, LTR and LTRR.
G. Universal Send (imageRUNNER 5000i Only)
The most highlighted function of the imageRUNNER 5000i is the Universal
Send Function. Paper documents can be changed into electronic format,
and sent to multiple destinations that are connected on the
imageRUNNER 5000i Network, or on the Internet. Furthermore, the
Universal Send function allows for more effective and productive
information management because of the simplicity with which paper
documentation can be seamlessly integrated into electronic format.
The imageRUNNER 5000i has the following sending functions:
! e-mail
! Database
! File
! Mailbox
H. Remote and Cascade Copying/Printing (imageRUNNER 5000i Only)
To make remote copies/prints, users simply scan an original at one
imageRUNNER 5000i machine, and print it from any single
imageRUNNER 5000i printer on the network. Cascade copies are made
in a similar manner, but are printed at two imageRUNNER 5000i machines
on the network with a combined delivery speed of up to 100 cpm (up to 50
cpm at each machine). Up to seven imageRUNNER 5000i IP Addresses
can be stored but only one device can be selected when Cascade or
remote copies are made.

imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i Service Guide

I. Large, Touch-Sensitive Operation Panel (imageRUNNER 5000i Only)

The color touch panel in the imageRUNNER 5000i is the same as that in
the imageRUNNER 8500, with a substantial 7.8 inch standard screen and
large, colorful images that allow for easy operation. Clear, step-by-step
instructions (i.e. removing a paper jam or changing the toner) offer users
of all levels easy directions on how to operate different features. Since the
display panel has the same look and feel as previous imageRUNNER
lines, the imageRUNNER 5000i requires minimal training, if any, for users
already familiar with Canon’s products.
J. imageWARE Document Manager (imageRUNNER 5000i Only)
By using the Send function, the imageRUNNER 5000i (Send to Database)
can send scanned documents to the imageWARE Document Manager
software. With this software, users can also store and view mailbox data
from their client servers.
K. eCopy Desktop for Windows
eCopy Desktop™ for Windows® is client-based software that provides
network users with the ability to treat eCopy document files just like paper,
right on their desktop computer. With eCopy Desktop, users can view and
annotate, perform Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to generate
editable text, and store or distribute eCopies from their desktops. eCopy
Desktop also allows users to combine or separate pages from multiple
eCopies, to create a new document of selected pages, or attach a
signature stamp.

eCopy Desktop for Windows is included with the imageRUNNER 5000i

SET however, it is optional for the imageRUNNER 5000/6000 models.

V. Service Features
A. Serviceability
To ensure machine reliability and copies of the highest quality, Canon
U.S.A., Inc. recommends that a Quality Assurance Visit be performed at a
minimum every 250,000 copies. Quality Assurance requires the cleaning,
checking, and replacement of parts as necessary for specific areas every
250,000 copies. The frequency of the Quality Assurance Visits will
depend on the following conditions: monthly copy volume, environment,
type of originals copied, and customer’s handling of the copier equipment.

QA QA QA
Installation 750K
250K 500K

A QA Procedure will require the replacement of various consumable parts

every 250,000 copies.
B. Upgrading
Canon U.S.A. will provide dealers with the Service Support Tool (Version
1.31 or later) via Canon e-Support for updating the following system
components:
• System Software stored on the Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
• Remote User Interface (RUI) stored on the HDD
• BootROM stored on a Flash Double In-line Memory Module
(FDIMM) on the Main Controller Printed Circuit Board (PCB)
The Service Support Tool has the ability to back-up RAM data (service
mode and user mode settings).
When the HDD is replaced, the Service Support Tool is used to format the
new HDD and load software. Canon USA will make the data for these
updates available to the dealers via CD-ROM.
Note:
A Personal Computer is required when installing upgraded firmware. Use
a Bicentronics IEEE-1284 I/F cable7 or a crossover network cable, as an
interface between the personal computer and the imageRUNNER
5000/6000/5000i to enable high-speed transmission of the data.

7
The following Bicentronics I/F cable is required: One end of the cable should have a TYPE A connector prescribed by IEEE1284
(25 pin, for PC connection). The other end should have a TYPE B connector (38 pin, for copier connection). Cables conforming
to the IEEE1284 are marked “IEEE Std. 1284 compliant.”

imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i Service Guide Rev. 1 December 2001 Page 12

imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i Service Guide

C. Computer Requirements For Upgrading

The following are the recommended Desktop PC or laptop specifications
to use for the download:
1) CPU: Intel™ Pentium™ 133MHz or higher
(A Pentium 75MHz proved to be inadequate)
2) Windows 95/98
3) Memory: 16MB or more (32MB or more is preferable)
4) Free HDD Capacity: 20MB8 of available hard disk space
5) Printer Port: ECP mode must be both supported and selected
6) CD-ROM Drive
D. Handling Of The HDD
The imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i uses a HDD for storage of the
firmware and image data. A HDD is easily affected by shock, vibration,
and static charge, therefore its handling requires special care. When
transporting a HDD, which is obtainable as a service part, it must be kept
in its original package until it is installed into the main body.

CAUTION:
THERE MAY BE AN ACCIDENT OR DEFECT WITH THE HARD DISK IN
THE MACHINE, CAUSING LOSS, DESTRUCTION OR ALTERNATION
OF DATA RECEIVED OR STORED ON THE HARD DISK. THEREFORE,
IT IS RECOMMENDED NOT TO STORE DATA ON THE HARD DISK
WITHOUT HAVING COPIES OR PRINTOUTS OF SUCH DATA
OUTSIDE. CANON RECOMMENDS THAT DATA STORED ON THE
PRODUCT'S HARD DISK DRIVE BE DUPLICATED OR BACKED UP TO
PREVENT ITS LOSS IN THE EVENT OF FAILURE OR OTHER
MALFUNCTION OF THE HARD DISK DRIVE. IN NO EVENT WILL
CANON OR ITS AFFILIATES OR THEIR DEALERS BE LIABLE FOR
ANY DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF DATA RECEIVED OR STORED ON THE
HARD DISK, INCLUDING LOSS ARISING FROM LOST OPPORTUNITY
TO USE SUCH DATA, EVEN IF CANON IS ADVISED OF THE
POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. (SEE THE TERMS OF THE
PRODUCT'S LIMITED WARRANTY FOR MORE DETAILS.)

8
Download tool (software) only. Actual space depends on the quantity (volume) of software, such as program software from old
version or from other model machines, for which a back up is to be performed. A separate space is needed to house the
Firmware/Software for the imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i that is approximately 40 MB.

imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i Service Guide Rev. 1 December 2001 Page 13

imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i Service Guide

E. Service Mode
In order to decrease the down time of the main unit, where efficient regular
service is possible, the number of sheets used for regular exchange
parts/consumable parts can be confirmed in service mode. Using the
main service mode, the technician can efficiently implement / prepare for
the exchange of parts on or during the next regular service call or visit.
F. Software Counter Mode
The Software Counter Mode is designed to decrease the number of
service visits. The degree of a worn-out consumable part can be checked
quantitatively upon a service call facilitating the ability to specify
consumable parts that are worn-out and the parts that need to be replaced
upon the next visit leading to an efficient periodic visit.
G. Power and Plug Requirements
The imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i requires a NEMA 5-20R recepticle
(20 AMP, 125 volt) for proper operation. See Figure 1 for the NEMA
diagram. Confirm that a NEMA 5-20R receptacle is available prior to
installation.
CAUTION
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PLUG THE imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i
COPIER INTO A STANDARD NEMA 5-15R RECEPTACLE. DOING SO
MAY RESULT IN AN OVERLOAD TO THE ELECTRIC CIRCUITS OR
DAMAGE TO THE COPIER.

VIII. Service Requirements

A. Authorization Policy
To become authorized and maintain authorization to service the
imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i, each Authorized Reseller’s location
must have at least one employee who has successfully completed the
imageRUNNER 5000/6000/5000i Systems Connectivity Program and
received certified status.
For a Canon copier dealership, a System Engineer 14 (SE) working with
Canon connectivity products should have the following basic job functions:
• Systems integration (pre-sale and post-sale)
• Installation
• Education of customers and dealership personnel
• Troubleshooting
In order to successfully perform these tasks, it is crucial that the SE have
strong computer skills and a “working knowledge” in the following areas
(listed in order of importance):
• The major computer platforms (IBM™ compatible and Macintosh™)
• Computer hardware (including cabling)
• Computer software (including drivers)
• Operating systems (DOS, Windows 95/98, MacOS™ System 7, 8, & 9)
• Network Operating Systems:
o Novell (3.x, 4.x, & 5.x)
o Windows NT (latest version)
• Protocols:
o IPX/SPX™
o TCP / IP
• Printing
• Scanning
In addition, computer skills and “working knowledge” in the following areas
may also be helpful:
• Other computer platforms (mainframe and UNIX™)
• Networking (TokenRing future option)
• Basic electronics
Possible backgrounds, (listed in preferred order), of a successful Canon
dealership SE are:
• Novell CNASM or CNESM certification / Microsoft® MCSE
• Canon copier service technician with two years of experience centered
on connectivity products.
A degree in computer science, engineering, or a computer technician with
two years of experience is required in the above areas.

14
A System Engineer (SE) is a professional title often used by hardware vendors for individuals who perform systems related tasks,
such as analysis, design, and programming. System Engineers are also often involved in pre-sales activities.
