CHAPTER ONE
1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background
The efficient management and use of hoses are vital in a wide range of applications, including
gardening, landscaping, agriculture, construction, industrial processes, and firefighting. Hoses
are essential tools for transporting liquids, gases, or air, but their usefulness can be compromised
by kinks, tangles, and damage if not properly organized and stored. In response to this challenge,
the "Installation of Hose Reel’’ was initiated to provide comprehensive solutions for the
installation of hose reel systems across diverse sectors.

1.2 Purpose of the Project

The primary objective of the "Installation of Hose Reel” is to establish a systematic and
standardized approach to installing hose reel systems. By doing so, we aim to:
Enhance workplace safety by preventing tripping hazards and minimizing the risk of hose
damage.
Improve efficiency in hose management, retrieval, and storage.
Extend the lifespan of hoses by reducing wear and tear.
Provide a user-friendly solution for individuals and organizations requiring hose management
systems.

professionals who require water supply, cleaning, and firefighting capabilities on the water.

1.5 Limitation of Hose reel

i. Hose reels have a maximum capacity and can only accommodate hoses up to a certain length.
ii. Using a hose with a diameter that exceeds the reel's capacity can cause problems with
proper winding and unwinding.
iii. Hose reels have weight limits, and exceeding these limits can strain the reel mechanism,
potentially leading to premature wear and tear or even failure.
iv. Hose reels require regular maintenance to ensure they function correctly. This includes
lubrication and inspection of components.
v. Extreme environmental conditions, i.e. extreme heat, cold, or exposure to corrosive
substances, can affect the longevity of hose reels.
vi. Proper installation of hose reels is crucial and if not installed securely, they can become
loose or unstable, affecting their performance and safety.
vii. Hose reels can be relatively expensive, especially for heavy-duty industrial applications.
The initial investment cost should be considered when choosing a hose reel.
1.6 Objectives of Hose reel
The objectives of a hose reel, whether used in a residential, commercial, or industrial setting,
revolve around efficiently managing hoses and improving safety and functionality. The specific
objectives may vary depending on the application, but here are the general objectives of a hose
reel:
i. The primary objective of a hose reel is to organize and store hoses in a neat and orderly
manner. This prevents kinks, tangles, and knots in the hose, making it easier to use.
ii. Safety: Fire Hose Reels are renowned for providing an unlimited water supply to
extinguish fires and protect against heat
iii. Ease of Use: This objective improves user convenience and efficiency, as hoses can be
quickly accessed and put away with minimal effort.

valuable in emergencies, such as firefighting, where quick access to hoses is critical.
CHAPTER TWO
2.0 Literature review
2.1 Discussion of Existing Design.
Involves evaluating the current setup and its effectiveness. Some of the key points to consider
when discussing an existing hose reel installation design include evaluating the location of the
hose reel; it should be a convenient and easily accessible area, proximity to potential fire
hazards, and the distance to water sources. Ensure that the hose reel is placed at an appropriate
height for easy access and operation. Assess the length and type of hose currently installed,
Verify that the hose material is suitable for the intended purpose and environment.
Before installation, examine the mounting and anchoring system and ensure that the hose reel is
installed according to local building codes and regulations, regular maintenance is essential to
keep the equipment in working condition and check if inspections and tests are conducted
periodically to ensure functionality.
Ensure that it provides adequate water pressure and flow and confirm that there is a reliable
shutoff valve to control water flow for firefighting purposes. Assess whether personnel who
might use the hose reel are trained in its operation and safety procedures and consider providing
refresher training as needed.
2.2 Proposed design
This project aims to establish a robust and efficient hose reel system to improve fire safety and
emergency response within the designated area. The design encompasses strategically placed
hose reels, equipment selection, signage, and maintenance protocols to ensure rapid and effective
firefighting capabilities. Some of the Design Components are,
 Hose reels will be strategically located throughout the facility, prioritizing areas with
potential fire hazards and high foot traffic.
 Proper spacing and accessibility will be considered for optimal coverage.
 High-quality, durable hoses suitable for the environment will be chosen.
 Hose lengths will be carefully selected to cover critical areas and provide adequate reach.
 Cabinets will be equipped with clear instructions, user-friendly labeling, and quick-
release mechanisms for swift access.
 Hose reels will be securely anchored to walls or structures using appropriate fasteners
and brackets.
 Installation will strictly adhere to local building codes and safety regulations.
 Adequate lighting and reflective markings will be implemented to ensure that hose reels
are visible and easily accessible, even in low-light conditions.
 Clear signage indicating the location of hose reels will be placed at strategic points.
 A reliable water supply system will be connected to the hose reel system, ensuring
consistent water pressure and flow.
 A comprehensive training program will be initiated to ensure that personnel is proficient
in operating hose reels and adhering to safety protocols.
2.3 Unique Features of Design.
A unique feature in the design for the installation of a hose reel project can set it apart and
enhance its effectiveness. One such unique feature could be:
I. Automatic hose rewind system, which is designed to streamline the hose retraction
process after it has been deployed for firefighting or other purposes. When the user has
finished using the hose, they simply release the nozzle or lever, and the automatic rewind
system engages.
II. The hose reel is equipped with a motorized drum or reel that automatically winds up the
hose. This drum is designed to handle the hose's full length and size.
III. A control panel is provided near the hose reel for initiating and controlling the rewinding
process. It includes buttons for starting, stopping, and adjusting the rewind speed.
IV. Safety sensors are integrated into the system to detect any obstructions or obstacles in the
path of the hose. If an obstruction is detected, the rewind process will pause to prevent
damage or accidents.
V. Users can adjust the rewind speed to suit the situation. Slower speeds may be used for
more controlled rewinding, while faster speeds can be selected for rapid retrieval.
2.4 Benefits of the Automatic Hose Rewind System
a) It reduces the time and effort required to stow the hose after use, allowing for faster
response in emergencies.
b) The risk of accidents or injuries associated with manual hose rewinding is minimized.
c) The system's safety sensors prevent the hose from being forcefully wound onto the reel if
an obstruction is encountered, reducing the risk of hose damage.
d) The control panel is designed to be easy to use, making it accessible to a wide range of
personnel.
e) Neatly rewound hose takes up less space within the hose reel cabinet or enclosure,
ensuring that the hose is properly stored and ready for the next use.
f) Automated rewinding process can extend the lifespan of the hose by reducing wear and
tear
