WHAT IS TALIPAPA
For rural residents, especially the impoverished, wet markets are a significant source
of food. Wet markets offer a large selection of inexpensive, fresh, and nutrient-dense
foods. The majority of the food comes from nearby farms. Vietnamese people, and
possibly people in many other nations, respect "freshness" as a characteristic because
it indicates that the food is both high-quality and safe to consume. In particular,
"warm" meat has a higher value because it indicates that the animal was killed on the
spot early in the morning.
In addition, compared to supermarkets, wet markets have a wider variety of fruits,
cereals, and vegetables. This is due to the fact that the food is locally obtained, as
opposed to supermarkets, who buy in bulk from vast wholesale marketplaces and
store their purchases in cold storage, frequently for extended periods of time.

For decades, a broad category of markets that have existed for millennia has been
referred to as "wet markets." They received their original name from their regularly
wet floors, which were caused by both the melting of the ice needed to preserve food
as well as continual washing to keep stalls clean.Wet markets are typically made up of
rows of individual vendor stalls selling consumable, perishable goods (such as fresh
meats and produce) in an open-air or partially open-air setting in east and southeast
Asian nations like China, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, and the
Philippines. (Zhong, et al 2020)

Wet markets are crucial components of the chain of retail food supply since they are
typically situated in a very convenient way for customers, vendors, and other
participants. Therefore, they would profit from carefully thought out technical designs
for multipurpose infrastructures and facilities that also support the safe handling of
food and general cleanliness. Because some markets for basic foods require this
infrastructure, the development of weighing, shipping, and storage infrastructures is
particularly crucial. The ideal solution to populations that are wet market customers
and are quickly urbanizing is to support well-planned wet market infrastructure.

Smallholder farmers generally sell their produce to wet or informal markets and so
rely on them for their livelihoods (Gomez & Ricketts, 2013)

Continued reliance on wet markets for produce is in part based upon the consumers
view that wet market produce is fresher, better tasting, and healthier than perishable
goods sold in supermarkets (Zhong et al., 2020).
Furthermore, there are cultural and social sustainability reasons as to why consumers
prefer wet markets (Zhong et al., 2020). This evidence shows the high global reliance
on wet markets for the sale and acquisition of food, and so they hold a key position
within a sustainable food transition

EFFECTS IN ENVIRONMENT
Maintaining hygienic and food safety standards is undoubtedly a challenge for wet
markets. Animals are frequently killed close to public shopping areas and at the
market itself. This can indicate that the meat is being stored in unhygienic
circumstances. There are frequently insufficient cooling facilities and inadequate
tools, such as spotless knives and cutting surfaces. Animal slaughterhouse wastewater
treatment poses a serious hygiene concern to the environment and public health.
In markets, cleanliness is crucial. Traditional wet markets must promise to provide
their patrons with healthy, fresh food from regional farmers. IFAD has made
investments to develop rural markets. In Bangladesh, the Market Infrastructure
Development Project in Charland Regions and the Coastal Climate Resilient
Infrastructure projects strengthened the market infrastructure and raised the bar for
hygiene. These initiatives were very effective. Infrastructure by itself is not enough.
To ensure that wet markets continue to exist as reliable sources of healthy food for the
poor and rural populations, policies and standards must be established and put into
place. (Thomas Rath, 2020)

POSSIBLE REASONS
Poor people need to have access to affordable and nutritious food. In the rural areas of
developing countries, wet markets are often the only place where people can afford to
purchase nutritious food. Local farmers, especially women, are dependent on selling
their produce in local markets. Families need this income to pay for clothing and
school fees for their children, cover medical expenses and purchase other essential
items. Though closing wet markets is not a solution, prioritizing health and safety
standards in rural markets is a good place to start. (Thomas Rath, 2020)

Farmers make up the majority of talipapa (small business) proprietors. The majority
of them had farms and a vegetable plantation. Actually, they had no intention of
opening a business. It just so happens that this is the only way they have to market
their vegetables in order to receive a good return on their investment from farming at
a time when they are cheap in the open marketplaces. Instead of spending money on
transporting the harvests to open markets, they decided to start a modest retail
operation close to where they lived. For farmers or even business people that see it as
an opportunity in their area, talipapa participation is one sustainable and reliable
source of stable revenue. This is typically a trend among business owners who have
limited operating funding sources. Furthermore, it is a known fact that talipapa
businesses cater to low-income individuals as their clients. As shown, the talipapa
serves as a gathering place for low-income populations with limited purchasing
power. And these are advantageous to low-income individuals or small business
owners. In reality, the acceptance of talipapa is obvious through owner testimony. The
majority of them began with modest operational capital and grew into sizable
businesses that could provide a wide range of consumer goods.
