modules

Introduction
The information in this document will help you to synchronise and load share Scania 200 Kva 320kva and 350kva
sets using the DSE 5510 module.
The Panels come with a case for safe keeping while they are not been used.
Make sure they are returned to the case after the end of each hire.

Case for panel storage Panel inside the case

Setup

1. One DSE 5510 Synchronising panel is required per generator.

2. Before starting the generators the oil and water levels have to be checked also check for any other faults.

3. Check that the AVR droop pot is turned fully anti clockwise and the trim Pot is fully clockwise. Check that the links
on the AVR are set to the correct Frequency and correct size generator.

For example: - 200Kva. 320Kva and 350Kva will be set on B and C for the size of generator. The frequency selection
will be either 3 and 2 for 50Hz operation or 3 and 1 for 60Hz operation.

4. Start the generator and check that the VOLTAGE, PHASE ROTATION and FREQUENCY are correct and set to
Client’s requirement.

5. The engine governor droop requires setting this is described below:-

350Kva.
On the 350Kva sets this is done by switching the ignition key to the local position and pressing the Stop/Reset button
and Information button at the same time on the DSE5310 module. This will take you to the configuration menu were you
need to enter the password which is 2000. This is done by pressing the + and – buttons, when the digit you require
appears press the auto button to save. When you have done this you can scroll through the menu until you come to a
screen which says DROOP. In the bottom left hand corner it will say disable press Auto and then + to enable the droop
and auto to save the setting. Now press the stop button to exit. The generator can now be started. Once the set is
running you will notice that the generator frequency has risen to 52Hz this can be adjusted to 50Hz by turning the speed
pot inside the control panel. The droop is now set.
If the set is required to run at 60Hz then you need to go into the configuration menu and scroll through the menus until
you find alternate frequency enable this by pressing auto and then + then auto to save the setting. When the set is now
started the frequency will go to 63Hz this can now be adjusted back to 60Hz using the speed pot inside the control
panel.

200kva.
To adjust the droop on these sets you need to open the control panel door you will then see a small panel. (See picture
below) Start the generator and check that the frequency is set to 50Hz you then need to turn the switch marked ISOCH /
DROOP to the right the engine speed will then increase to 52Hz if it does not then the pot marked droop requires
adjusting to bring the engine speed up to 52Hz the engine speed can then be lowered to 50Hz using the pot marked
speed.
If the 200 or 320Kva require to be operated at 60Hz then the dip switch on the DEC 2 module requires changing.
Switch 6. ON position for 50HZ
OFF position for 60Hz.
The generator can then be started and frequency checked and adjusted if required. Turn the ISOCH /DROOP switch to
the right the engine speed will go up to 63Hz. The speed can then be lowered to 60Hz by using the speed pot. The
droop is now set.

320Kva.
The 320Kva is adjusted in the same way as the 200Kva except you do not need to adjust the droop/engine speed via
the droop pot once the ISOCH/DROOP switch is turned to the right the engine speed will go to 52Hz you can then
lower the speed via the speed pot. See above for 60Hz operation.

On the earlier Scania sets fitted with the P522 module a small toggle switch requires switching from 50Hz to 60Hz if
you are changing frequencies this is at the rear of the 522 module.

6. Now the AVR droop has to be set this is done by using Resistive / Reactive load bank.

Voltage droop is normally set at 3% 0.8 pf.

Apply full load at 0.8pf check the voltage and adjust to client’s requirement. Adjust the droop pot so that the volts drop
by 3% i.e. 400volts off load apply full load @ 0.8pf and adjust the droop pot so you get a voltage reading of 388volts
remove load and re-adjust voltage to client’s requirement.

7. The 5510 modules require connecting via the 16 pin and 24pin plugs a show below:-

16 and 24 pin plugs on panel. 16 and 24 pin sockets on new Scania.

16 and 24 pin sockets on earlier Scania. Location of 16 and 24 pin socket on newer sets

8. Before the generators can be started a screened cable requires connecting between the panels the sockets for this is
shown below:-

Socket where the 120ohm resistor is fitted. Plug holding the 120ohm Resistor.

The screened cable supplied with each panel can be connected through the gland fitting to cable numbers K61
and K63. Other types of screened cable can cause the modules to display an MSC DATA ERROR this means
they are not communicating with each other.
A 120 ohm resistor has to fitted to the first and last panel i.e. If 2 sets are been synchronised then the resistor will be in
both panels. If 3 sets are been synchronised then the resistor would be in the 1st and 3rd panel. 4 sets then it will be in
the 1st and 4th panel. If the resistor is not being used place inside the panel

The screen cable supplied with the panels requires connecting to

terminals K61 and K63. Do not connect the MSC cable screen to earth
at any point. Protection from interference is provided within the module
and may be compromised by earthing the MSC cable screen.

9. Once the panels/modules are connected to the generator the CT ratios can be set in the 5510 module this is for two
main reasons one the metering display and the other is reverse power.
On the 350Kva and 320Kva the CT ratio is 1000A / 1A
On the 200kva the CT ratio is 600A / 1A

Adjustment is done in 2 different ways depending on which software version is installed in the modules if you have
panels with a plant number between XAMN034 and XAMN039 then this has to be done using a laptop. If the plant
numbers are between XAMN040 and XAMN049 this can be done via the module.

Via the laptop Computer.

a. Make sure the DSE program is installed on the computer to be used.
b. Check that the module has power to it.
c. Connect the DSE interface cable between the laptop and 5510 module.
d. Click on the icon below and this will open the DSE program.

start program

e. You will then see a screen like the one on the left below. Click on the 55xx icon this will take you to the screen
in the centre click OK and then onto the below right screen.

f. Once you have got to the screen on the above right you need to click on read from controller this will then upload all
the parameters from the module. Next click on Edit config this will then take you to the screen below were you have to
click on Generator and then Current Power.

10. To check the reverse power you can change over the C/T wires C50 and C90. Apply load to the generator it
should trip @ 35kw which is the default setting of the DSE 5510 module or you can set the value your self via the
laptop. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THIS FUNCTION WORKS.

11. Once the governor droop, voltage droop, frequency and phase rotation have been adjusted. Then the sets can be
Synchronized and checked to see if they are sharing load correctly

12. They now be need to be switched from local to remote by turning the key on the front panel see below:-

Requires switching Requires putting

into remote into Auto

13. The 5310 module now requires putting into the Auto mode this is done by pressing the auto button the 5310 (see
picture of module on page 9) the 5310 module will then display WAITING IN AUTO.
If the P522 module is fitted then this requires putting into the auto position see above:-
Now the set can be started from the DSE 5510 module by pressing the manual button and then the generator start
button. Once the set is up to running speed and the display on the generator module shows GENERATOR AVAILABLE
you will be able to close the circuit breaker by pushing the MCB close button shown below the green LED will then be lit.

14. To synchronise the other sets press the information (page) button and scroll through the different pages till you
come the Synchronising page

At the start of synchronising the display will only show the

difference between the Bus and Generator output i.e. frequency
and voltage. The display is showing a mismatch of 2.9Hz this is
shown by the arrow. The generator frequency is high and
Arrow indicating the should be lowered by adjusting the speed pot slightly. The
Hz is too high voltage is also high but within limits set for synchronizing shown
by the Tick.

Moving bar

When the difference between the Bus and Generator

output has been reduced the synchroscope display will
become active this can be seen by the moving bar. The
area in the centre of the synchroscope indicates were
synchronizing will occur.

Tick mark indicating that the

Voltage and Frequency are in
acceptable limits

Once the voltage and frequency are within acceptable limits

shown by the tick marks then Synchronising can take place.

Press the MCB close button to start Auto

Synchronising. The 5510 module will then adjust the
Voltage and Hz if required. When the breaker has closed
the LED will be lit indicating that the set is synchronized
to the Bus and the bar will be locked in the centre of the
Synchroscope.

The moving bar is now locked in the

centre of the synchroscope.

THE SETS ARE NOW SYNCHRONISED!!
