Sermon

 Title:  An  Attitude  of  Gratitude

Sermon  Text:  Philippians  1:4  (and  other  letters  by  Paul*)

Sermon  Truth:  We  can  be  thankful  even  in  difficult  times

Sermon  Object:  Paul  Wrote  That  He  Was  Grateful,  Even  In  Prison  Sermon  Picture

Seasonal  Emphasis:  Thanksgiving

Sermon:

The  Apostle  Paul  was  one  of  the  great  preachers  in  the  early  church.  He  wrote  many  of
the  letters  that  we  have  in  the  Bible.  Did  you  know  that  in  most  of  the  letters  he  wrote,
Paul  expressed  gratitude  for  his  readers?  Paul  had  an  attitude  of  gratitude.  But  did  you
know  that  Paul  was  also  in  prison  when  he  wrote  many  of  these  letters?

Here’s  a  picture  of  Paul  writing  one  of  his  letters.  It  may  be  that  Paul  was  writing  to  the
Philippian  church.  In  Philippians  1:4,  Paul  said,  “I  give  thanks  to  my  God  for  every
remembrance  of  you.”

Sometimes  things  happen  to  us  that  make  us  sad.  That  was  true  for  Paul,  too.  More  than
once  Paul  was  beaten  or  stoned.  Once  he  was  shipwrecked.  Paul  also  had  some  kind  of
health  issue.  But  even  though  Paul  had  all  of  these  problems,  he  still  had  an  attitude  of
gratitude.

God  is  pleased  when  we  have  an  attitude  of  gratitude  because  it  shows  that  we  believe
He  is  good  and  worthy  of  our  thanksgiving  even  when  things  don’t  go  the  way  we  would
like.

I  hope  you’ll  remember  this  week  that  God  wants  you  to  have  an  attitude  of  gratitude
and  be  thankful  even  in  difficult  times.

*  Paul  expressed  thanks  for  his  readers  in  Romans  1:8,  1  Corinthians  1:4,  Ephesians  1:16,
Philippians  1:4,  Colossians  1:3,  1  Thessalonians  1:2,  2  Thessalonians  1:3,  2  Timothy  1:3,
and  Philemon  1:4.
