M E TA L RO S E
By Karanveer
C U T T I N G M E TA L

The first thing I did when starting off is grab metal sheet,
then I also got gloves, I then got started cutting the metal
with the metal shears into these squares, you need four of
them, they had to be 3.5 inches in width and length, with
the machine you must set the back fence at the right
distance, if the metal sheet won't touch the back fence,
then you need to put your metal sheet a bit higher. Then
you need to stomp onto the pedal of the machine, then
you go under safely and grab your newly cut metal

After cutting out my 4 metal cubes I grabbed the

engraver and wrote out my name on my metal,
the protection needed when using the engraver is
the heating protection because the engraver can
be very loud. Also, you should write your name in
the middle because after you are going to be
cutting it and you could cut your name off if it is
on the edge
CUTTING IT CIRCULAR

I Then after writing my name I get a plastic cup and

using that plastic cup I use a marker to draw out circle
onto my metal, use a plastic cup when doing this, don’t
use a gatorade bottle cap because they are only 3
inches so just try to find a plastic cup. Then I got a
glove on the one hand I was holding the metal with, I
didn’t need to grab eye protection because I already
had glasses on, then I got the tins and started cutting
my metal into circular pieces,
F I L I N G P E DA L S

After cutting up your metal now you have 4

circles of medal, but these pieces could be sharp
and just not looks like a circle on some areas, so
then you can grab a metal file, then put your
metal into a vice and clamp it down tightly, for
the filing you will need hearing protection and
gloves, then you can sit down or stand up and start
filing your metal until it is nice and smooth
LOOKING FOR THE
CENTER

Now you take your metal pieces and go to a

corner of a table that you can put you piece of
metals up against now you have to put the
piece of metal on the edge, and this should
leave some space, now grab a ruler and draw a
line across your piece making a horizontal line
then do the same vertically, then I repeat these
steps onto all my pieces,
CENTER PUNCHING

With the last step drawing a vertical and horizontal line

will let you see the center, the center is where the
horizontal path and the vertical path meet at,( where
there is a X). Now you will need to grab a center punch
and a hammer, you will also need hearing protection
and eye protection, now grab your center punch place it
on top off the center and hit the center punch with
your hammer but only hit it once but do make sure you
hit it kind of hard but not full force. I did it on the vice,
but you just need a flat surface, you need to center
punch all 4 pieces, center punching will help you later.

Now you will need to cut 8 pedals onto the big pedal,
but you don’t need to cut the pedals off you just cut
the pedals to a certain point which is by the center
punch, I got a ruler and marked two more lines
through the middle of the metal, these two line made
it so there became 8 sides to the piece, now you need
to go grab gloves and eye protection, then you can
start with the cutting, you will need tin snips,
DRILLING THE HOLE

Now you will need to drill your hole for the stem to
go in through, when drilling this we didn’t use a drill
press we just used a normal drill, you will need a 1/8
drill bit and vice grips now start, you will need to put
the drill bit into the drill, then you will need to clamp
your project onto the vice grips but the vice grips we
used we had to hold onto, make sure you also have on
the right protection which is eye protection and gloves,
so now make sure the drill is spinning the right
way(clockwise). And now you are ready to drill, nbow
place the drill onto the center punch that you made
and start drilling, put a little bit of pressure when
drilling.

Now you will need to detail your pieces of metal, you

will need to grab a hammer and start turning the
pieces into bowls, then I grabbed a chipping hammer,
and started chipping at my piece this made it look
more like a rose or like a flower, and the chipping
made it go back down into a flat piece of metal so I
again had to turn it into a bowl.
M A K E T H E S TA R

Now you need to put aside your pedals and start

working on the star, for the star you will need to ask
the teacher for a sheet of metal, the sheet of metal
doesn’t have to be big you just need an ok size, then
you need to draw the star, I drew a full star and
made it look good.
CUTTING AND CENTER
P U N C H I N G S TA R

Now that you have drew an outline for your star you
will need to get gloves and eye protection, then grab
tin snips and start cutting out the star that you drew,
after cutting the star I filed it to make it smooth on
some parts, and just make it look good. After doing
all this I got the middle of my star marked and
center punched my star.
D R I L L I N G T H E S TA R

Now that you have center punched the star you

can move on to drilling the star, when drilling the
star, you will need vice grips and when you can
tell the vice grips are tightened you can start
drilling. Again, like the pedals you need to start
drilling and press down on the star.
W I E L D I N G RO D

Now that you have finished the star

and pedals, you will need to go up to
Mr. Spears and ask him for a stem.
Mr spears will give you a very long
stem, maybe about 32 inches, you
will need to walk to your desk with
it( both hand on the edges so you
don’t stab someone in the eye). Then
I grabbed a ruler and measured out
12 inches, and cut the stem with
lineman pliers,

(I'm just calling the

wielding rod a stem)
AT TA C H I N G T H E RO S E

Now that I have gotten my wielding rod ready, I

need to start assembling the rose, I first made a
loop on the wielding rod about 4 inches down
from the top. Then I put my star and my pedals
onto the wielding rod, so my pieces rested on top
of the loop that I made. Then I proceeded to bend
the wielding rod again but this time at the top. So
now my pedals aren't moving around and are
staying still.
TURNING IT INTO A
RO S E

The next thing I need to do is to make my rose

look like a rose. I can do this by taking to pliers I
preferred using one small one and one big one,
then with the pliers you need to slowly pull up
each individual pedal and place them by the top
loop. When doing this you need to make sure that
each individual pedal is wrapped tightly. For me
the 1st pedals were very tight and the ones I did
last were much looser.

For making the leaf it is basically the same

process as making the pedals. First you need to
get a piece from the metal scraps bin, then you
need to cut out a shape of a leaf onto the
metal scrap that you got, I cut out my leaf into
a slimmer water droplet. After cutting it I went
in with a chipping hammer but this time I did
the chipping sideways to make it more ideal
for a rose leaf.
SAND BLASTING

After making the leaves for my project I started on

sand blasting. For sand blasting you will only need
hearing protection. Before you start working you will
first need to turn the compressor on, and you need to
clamp in your material to some vice grips, (don’t grab
a new pair of vice grips there is one certain one that
you need to use.) after making sure your rose is tightly
gripped you can turn on the machine and start to sand
blast, for sand blasting you need to hold the vice grips
in your hand and the sand blaster in the other. When
you are ready you can place your foot on the foot
pedal and blast sand onto your rose this will blast off
all the coating that was on it. I also did the same
process with my leaves.
