block the site without using any software
->go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
->look for hosts file & open it with notepad
->that opens as below...

# copyright (c) 1993-1999 microsoft corp.

#
# this is a sample hosts file used by microsoft tcp/ip for windows.
#
# this file contains the mappings of ip addresses to host names. each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. the ip address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# the ip address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# for example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

->now type the address of the site wich u wanna block(say www.aol.com) under last
line as..
127.0.0.2 www.example.com
127.0.0.3 www.abcd.com (u can block any no.of sites by increasing last digit)

->save & close the file.that's it.

give a folder its very own drive letter
windows tip give a folder its very own drive letter

say you've got a folder you refer to all the time - like your my documents or data
folder - and you're sick of navigating a deep hierarchy to get to it. the
codejacked weblog has a solution: assign a drive letter to the folder for quick
and easy access.

pretend that you have a file folder called c:\data\word_docs, that you use it
constantly, and that you would like to refer to it with a shortcut of w:. open up
a command prompt window and issue the following command:
subst w: c:\data\word_docs
subst is short for substitute. (dos commands are case-insensitive, so you could
enter it as "subst" as well.) so, now, w:\intro.doc is the same thing as
c:\data\word_docs\intro.doc -- two different ways to refer to the same file.
neat, short way to access files in an oft-used folder. but, be warned: when a
folder is mapped like this to a drive letter, file deletions bypass the recycle
bin and are unrecoverable using usual methods.

remove user name from start menu
remove user name from start menustart > run > gpedit.msc > user configuration >
administrative templates > start menu and taskbar > find remove user name from
start menu > right click properties > check enabled > ok

folder menu on taskbar
normally, folders like my documents or some others have to be accessed from the
start menu or desktop, and they open a window. although you can set some folders
to scroll from the start menu, it is sometimes easier to make a "folder menu" that
can simply be expanded from the taskbar.
1. right-click the taskbar, and uncheck lock the taskbar.
2. right-click the taskbar again, and go to toolbars > new toolbar...
3. a dialog will come up. click the folder you want as a menu.
4. if the folder suddenly consumes the taskbar, move the handle next to the title
to the right until only the title and the double-arrow expansion button can be
seen (next to the tray area).
5. right-click the taskbar, and check lock the taskbar again.the folder will now
be accessible in a menu-like fashion from the taskbar. big time saver! if you want
to remove it later on, just right-click the taskbar, and uncheck the folder title
you want removed under toolbars.

note: also works in windows 2000, me, and 98.

change your welcome (login) screen
this tweak will only work if you have the "use welcome screen" option activated in
control panel>users accounts>logon and logoff options.
1. make a backup copy of c:\windows\system32\logonui.exe
2. overwrite the file with your new login screen. (be sure to use the same file
name as the old logonui.exe)
3. if you ever want to revert back to the old login screen, just overwrite
c:\windows\system32\logonui.exe with your backup.
enjoy!

some edits and supplements

windows system file protection will not allow to override the file unless you
follow these steps:
1. rename the logonui.exe file in either c:\windows\system32\dllcache or in
c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386 (depends on if and how you installed the
servicepack).2. copy your custom logonui.exe to this folder.3. boot into safe mode
and do exactly the same (rename the original file and copy in your new one) in
c:\windows\system32. system file protection will pop up two windows. answer them
with "cancel" and "yes".
note: it is always better to rename the original file and not override it.
alternatively you can use this method to change the welcome screen :1. copy your
custom logon file under another name, let's say logonuia.exe, to
c:\windows\system32.2. open regedit (always backup before changing anything in the
registry) to hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows
nt\currentversion\winlogon and change the value for uihost to logonuia.exe.

lock any folder without using any software
1. suppose you have a folder named abcd in d:\abcd.
2. in the same drive next to the folder create a new notepad file with the exact
statementren abcd abcd.{21ec2020-3aea-1069-a2dd-08002b30309d}
3. now save this text file as loc.bat
4. create another notepad file and typeren abcd.{21ec2020-3aea-1069-a2dd-
08002b30309d} abcd
5. save this as key.bat
6. now there are two batch files. double click loc.bat and your folder will change
into control panel and its contents cannot be viewed .
7. to open the folder double click key.bat and you get back your original folder.
8. for more safety keep the key.bat in another location . only for unlocking copy
paste to the original location and double click..

hi friends..........................this is my new profile, my old profile has

been deleted
some time before i had posted win xp tricks........so friend i'm continuing with
these tips and tricks.......................

windows tips and tricks part i

this is part one... i'll be posting second part soon
this time i have a collection of tips and tricks which no body normally knows, the
secrets which microsoft is afraid to tell the people, the information which you
will
seldom find all gathered up and arranged in a single file. to fully reap this
manual you
need to have a basic understanding of the windows registry, as almost all the
tricks and
tips involve this file.
****************
important note: before you read on, you need to keep one thing in mind. whenever
you
make changes to the windows registry you need to refresh it before the changes
take
place. simply press f5 to refresh the registry and enable the changes. if this
does not
work restart your system

exiting windows the cool and quick way
normally it takes a hell lot of time just shutting down windows, you have to move
your
mouse to the start button, click on it, move it again over shut down, click, then
move it
over the necessary option and click, then move the cursor over the ok button and
once
again (you guessed it) click.this whole process can be shortened by creating
shortcuts on
the desktop which will shut down windows at the click of a button. start by
creating a
new shortcut( right click and select new> shortcut). then in the command line box,
type
(without the quotes.)
'c:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindowsexec'
this shortcut on clicking will restart windows immediately without any warning. to
create a shortcut to restarting windows, type the following in the command line
box:
'c:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows'
this shortcut on clicking will shut down windows immediately without any warning.

ban shutdowns: a trick to play on lamers
this is a neat trick you can play on that lamer that has a huge ego, in this
section i teach
you, how to disable the shut down option in the shut down dialog box. this trick
involves editing the registry, so please make backups. launch regedit.exe and go
to :
hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\curre
ntversion\policies\explorer
in the right pane look for the noclose key. if it is not already there then create
it by right
clicking in the right pane and selecting new > string value.(name it noclosekey )
now
once you see the noclosekey in the right pane, right click on it and select
modify. then
type 1 in the value data box.
doing the above on a win98 system disables the shut down option in the shut down
dialog box. but on a win95 machine if the value of noclosekey is set to 1 then
click on
the start > shut down button displays the following error message:
this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.
please
contact your system administrator.
you can enable the shut down option by changing the value of noclosekey to 0 or
simply deleting the particular entry i.e. deleting noclosekey.
instead of performing the above difficult to remember process, simply save the
following
with an extension of .reg and add it's contents to the registry by double clicking
on it. 26 feb sachin
regedit4
[hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\curre
ntversion\policies\explorer]
"noclose"="1"
disabling display of drives in my computer
this is yet another trick you can play on your geek friend. to disable the display
of local
or networked drives when you click my computer go to :
hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\curre
ntversion\policies\explorer
now in the right pane create a new dword item and name it nodrives. now modify
it's value and set it to 3ffffff (hexadecimal) now press f5 to refresh. when you
click
on my computer, no drives will be shown. to enable display of drives in my
computer,
simply delete this dword item. it's .reg file is as follows:
regedit4
[hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\curre
ntversion\policies\explorer]
"nodrives"=dword:03ffffff

this all tricks r trusted but if u doing any mistake than i'm not responsible for
that.....
check it with ur own risk, but if u got any problem than tell me i will try to
solve ur problem

eep watching i will post my next tricks

make the folder invisible without hiding

make your folders invisible:

1)right click on da desktop r any where tht u can make a folder, make a new folder

2)now rename the folder with a hidden name r with out a name, u have to hold alt
key and type 0160.
3)now u have a folder with out a name.

4)right click on the folder -> properties -> customize. click on change icon.

5)there u will find icons, scroll a bit to right side, u should find 4 empty
spaces, click on any one of them. click ok thats it, now u hav an invisible
folder.

6)store ur personal data without any 3rd party tools.

hav fun.

hackin_guru@yahoo.com

1.go to start->run.type regedit.now go to:

hkey_current_user/software/microsoft/currentversion/policies

under this key, there will definitely be a key named explorer. now under this
explorer key we can create new dword values and modify it's value to 1 in order to
impose the restriction. if you want to remove the restriction, then you can simply
delete the respective dword values or instead change their values to 0. the
following is a list of dword values that can be created under the explorer key-:

nodeleteprinter: disables deletion of already installed printers

noaddprinter: disables addition of new printers

norun : disables or hides the run command

nosetfolders: removes folders from the settings option on start menu (control
panel, printers, taskbar)

nosettaskbar: removes taskbar system folder from the settings option on start menu

nofind: removes the find tool (start >find)

nodrives: hides and does not display any drives in my computer

nonethood: hides or removes the network neighborhood icon from the desktop

nodesktop: hides all items including, file, folders and system folders from the
desktop

noclose: disables shutdown and prevents the user from normally shutting down
windows.

nosavesettings: means to say, 'don't save settings on exit'

disableregistrytools: disable registry editing tools (if you disable this option,
the windows registry editor(regedit.exe) too will not work.)

norecentdocshistory: removes recent document system folder from the start menu (ie
4 and above)

clearrecentdocsonexit: clears the recent documents system folder on exit.

nolnternetlcon: removes the internet (system folder) icon from the desktop

creating a desktop shortcut for locking your compu
if you use your computer in an area where others may have access to it, and there
are things on your system you would rather have kept confidential, locking your
desktop when you leave the computer is an essential task. here's a recipe for a
desktop shortcut that will lock your computer in two easy clicks:

right click on an empty area of the desktop and choose 'new' then 'shortcut.' the
create shortcut wizard will open; in the first text box, type
'%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,lockworkstation' and then give your
shortcut an appropriate name on the next page, and hit 'finish.'

you will notice that the shortcut you created has a blank icon. to select a more
appropriate one, right click on the shortcut and hit 'properties.' in the
'shortcut' tab, click the 'change icon' button.

in the 'look for icons in this file' box, type '%systemroot%\system32\shell32.dll'

then click 'ok' to see a range of icons for your new shortcut. choose an
appropriate icon. your desktop locking shortcut is now ready for use. test it out.

it is usegul if u have an account as it will prompt 4 a password. 28/12/2007

deleting system softwares
xp hides some system software you might want to remove, such as windows messenger,
but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. using notepad or edit, edit
the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word 'hide' and remove it.
you can then go to the add or remove programs in the control panel, select
add/remove windows components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.
28/12/2007 puneet
creating shutdown icon or one click shutdown:
navigate to your desktop. on the desktop, right-click and go to new, then to
shortcut (in other words, create a new shortcut). you should now see a pop-up
window instructing you to enter a command line path.
use this path in "type location of the item"
shutdown -s -t 01
if the c: drive is not your local hard drive, then replace "c" with the correct
letter of the hard drive. click the "next" button. name the shortcut and click the
"finish" button. now whenever you want to shut down, just click on this shortcut
and you're done. 28/12/2007 puneet
modify autoplay for different types of cd
windows xp includes the ability to perform different actions depending on the type
of cd you insert into the drive. for example, you could set your system to always
respond to cds containing mp3 files by opening windows media player.

to edit the autoplay properties: open 'my computer'. right click on the drive you
wish to set and select 'properties.' choose the autoplay tab. use the dropdown box
to see the various recognized types of cd and choose appropriate actions for them.
28/12/2007 puneet
renaming the recycle bin icon:
to change the name of the recycle bin desktop icon, click start then goto run,
write regedit and press enter. it opens registry editor. now in registry editor go
to:

hkey_classes_root/clsid/{645ff040-5081-101b-9f08-00aa002f954e}
and change the name "recycle bin" to whatever you want (don't type any quotes).
28/12/2007 puneet
locking the desktop
if you are leaving your computer for a while and do not wish to turn it off, but
want to assure that no-one else can use the computer while you are away, locking
the desktop is the best option.

by pressing windowskey+l, you password protect your system just as if you had
logged out or restarted the computer. the advantage is that any programs or
processes that were running when you locked the desktop will stay open and running
in the background, ready for you to resume work or play. 28/12/2007 puneet
removing shared documents folder from my computer
open registry editor by going to start then run and entering regedit. once in
registry, navigate to key

hkey_local_machine \ software \ microsoft \ windows \ currentversion \ explorer \

my computer \ namespace \ delegatefolders

you must see a sub-key named {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}. if you delete

this key, you have effectively removed the my shared documents folder. 28/12/2007
puneet
making google the default search engine in interne
open registry editor by going to start then run and entering regedit and navigate
to following three keys separately and change it as shown below:

[hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\internet explorer\main]
"search page"=" http://www.google.com"
"search bar"=" http://www.google.com/ie"
[hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\internet explorer\searchurl]
""=" http://www.google.com/keyword/%s"
[hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\internet explorer\search]
"searchassistant"=" http://www.google.com/ie" .

customize logon prompt with your own words:

open registry by going to start then run, entering regedit and navigate to
[hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon]. in
right pane, look for key by the name "logonprompt". set its value to whatever text
you want to see displayed at login screen. 30/12/2007 puneet
to change drive letters:
go to start > control panel > administrative tools > computer management, disk
management, then right-click the partition whose name you want to change (click in
the white area just below the word "volume") and select "change drive letter and
paths."
from here you can add, remove or change drive letters and paths to the partition
30/12/2007 puneet
removing the shortcut arrow from desktop icons:
goto start then run and enter regedit. navigate to hkey_classes_rootlnkfile.
delete the isshortcut registry value. you may need to restart windows xp.
30/12/2007 puneet
improving the slow boot up time:
there are a variety of reasons why your windows xp system would boot slowly. most
of the times it this has to do with the startup applications. if you would like to
speed up the bootup sequence, consider removing some of the startup applications
that you do not need. easiest way to remove startup apps is through system
configuration utility. go to start then run and enter msconfig and go to the
startup tab. deselect/uncheck application(s) that you do not want to startup at
boot time. 30/12/2007 puneet
removing the recycle bin from the desktop:
if you don't use the recycle bin to store deleted files , you can get rid of its
desktop icon all together. run regedit and go to:

hkey_local_machine/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/explorer/desktop/name
space 30/12/2007 puneet
adding administrative tools icon to the desktop:
open registry editor. in registry editor, navigate to the following registry key:
hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\desktop\name
space . create the following key: {d20ea4e1-3957-11d2-a40b-0c5020524153} (just
copy/paste, including the brackets). close registry editor. there is no need to
reboot. just wait a few seconds and see how the icon appears. 30/12/2007 puneet
using advanced file security settings in windows
windows xp is based on the same platform as windows 2000, and shares that
operating system's robust file security options, at least when using the ntfs file
system. unfortunately this security system, which enables an administrator to
decide exactly which files and programs any given user will have access to, is not
actually implemented by default in windows xp. this is a concession microsoft made
to avoid confusing basic users of xp pro, and to cripple xp home.

the ntfs file security options can be enabled easily enough in xp pro, but are
apparently non-existent in the home version. fact is, the tools are there, you
just need to look a little bit harder.

to enable ntfs file security in windows xp home: first you need to assure that at
least your main hard drive is formatted with the ntfs file system. see tip #61 for
instructions on this. restart your system. just after the memory and bios check
screen, but before the windows splash screen comes up, press f8 a few times.

when the windows boot menu appears, select 'safe mode' from the list of options.

once windows has loaded in safe mode, right click the folders and files you would
like to change access to. you will notice that the 'security' tab now exists, and
thus you are allowed to assign or deny access to individual users for each file,
folder and program. once you are done, restart windows normally, and your changes
will be enforced. 30/12/2007 puneet
to increase the internet speed:
open notepad and paste the below code in it.

[hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\tcpip\parameters]
"sackopts"=dword:00000001
"tcpwindowsize"=dword:0005ae4c
"tcp1323opts"=dword:00000003
"defaultttl"=dword:00000040
"enablepmtubhdetect"=dword:00000000
"enablepmtudiscovery"=dword:00000001
"globalmaxtcpwindowsize"=dword:0005ae4c

now save this file as speed.reg. execute it and observe the change!

renaming the start button:

to rename the start button, you will need a hex editor.
my preference is ultraedit

copy the \windows\explore.exe file to a new name (e.g. explorer_1.exe)

with the hex editor, open that file and go to offset 412b6
you will see the word start with blanks between each letter
edit it be any 5 characters or less
save the file
boot to dos
copy the existing c:\windows\explorer.exe to explorer.org
copy explorer_1.exe to explorer.exe
you will also need to replace the explorer.exe in the c:\windows\system32\dllcache
file as well with the new one.
note: if the partition is ntfs and you can't access the files from dos:
start regedit
go to hkey_local_machine \ software \ microsoft \ windows nt \ currentversion \
winlogon.

to convert a fat partition to ntfs:
to convert a fat partition to ntfs:

click start, click programs, and then click command prompt.

in windows xp, click start, click run, type cmd and then click ok.
at the command prompt, type convert [driveletter]: /fs:ntfs.
convert.exe will attempt to convert the partition to ntfs.
note: although the chance of corruption or data loss during the conversion from
fat to ntfs is minimal, it is best to perform a full backup of the data on the
drive that it is to be converted prior to executing the convert command. it is
also recommended to verify the integrity of the backup before proceeding, as well
as to run rdisk and update the emergency repair disk (erd). 30/12/2007 puneet
breaking the xp password:
in case of user password boot the pc in safemode by pressing the f8 key and then
selecting the safe mode option. you can now logon as an administrator and xp wont
prompt for the password. incase of an administrator account try rebooting the pc
in dos. access c:\windows\system32\config\sam . rename sam as sam.mj
now xp wont ask for password next time you login. also

go to the cmd prompt .

type net user *.
it will list all the users.
again type net user "administrator" or the name of the administrator "name" *.
e.g.: net user aaaaaa *(where aaaaaa is the name).
it will ask for the password.
type the password and there you are done.
logging in as administrator:

hold the ctrl-alt key and press del twice. this will bring up the normal login and
you can log on as administrator.

to unhide the administrator account so it does show up:

start regedit

go to hkey_local_machine \ software \ microsoft \ windows nt \ currentversion \

winlogon \ specialaccounts \ userlist

unhide the administrator key by giving it a value of 1 30/12/2007 puneet

automatically run programs when starting windows
if there are applications or commands that you run every single time you start
your computer (email comes to mind) you may want to consider setting things up so
that these programs run automatically during the windows xp startup. this can be
done quite easily in xp by creating shortcuts and shuffling them around.

here's how: windows xp has a startup folder located at 'c:\ documents and
settings\ (your user name)\ start menu\ programs\startup.' shortcuts placed into
this folder will be run automatically when windows xp starts up.

if you already have shortcuts for the programs you desire to use, copy and paste
them into the startup folder. otherwise, go to 'start\programs,' select the
program you would like to create a shortcut for, right click it and select 'send
to' then 'desktop.' this will create a shortcut on the desktop that you can then
use. 30/12/2007 puneet

how to hide the drives(c:,d:,e:,a:...etc) in my co
this is a great trick you can play on your friends. to disable the display of
local or networked drives when you click my computer.

1.go to start->run.type regedit.now go to:

hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer

now in the right pane create a new dword item and name it nodrives(it is case
sensitive). now modify it's value and set it to 3ffffff (hexadecimal) .now restart
your computer. so, now when you click on my computer, no drives will be shown(all
gone...). to enable display of drives in my computer, simply delete this dword
item that you created.again restart your computer.you can now see all the drives
again. magic........lol....
