Department of Theatre Events - Rule Book

Stage Play

It is said that the stage is a magic circle where only the most real
things happen, a neutral territory outside the jurisdiction of fate
where stars may be crossed with impunity. A truer and more real
place does not exist in the universe. The Stage Play event brings
you a wholesome feat of drama to awaken and thrill your senses.
Itgives you a chance to captivate your audience with your actions
and expressions and to watch and perform captivating plays.

Registration
● Pre-registration (includes script submission).
● Submit a pdf version of your script and a synopsis of the
play to dep.of.theatre@gmail.com and cc to pcr@bits-
oasis.org.
Subject line of the email should be “<Event Name>
<College Name> - Oasis ’23 Script Submission”.
● For last date for submission, check registration
details.
● The selected teams, once on-campus, should report to
the Department of Theatre room (XXXX, FD-II) with
their IDs post registration at the Controls booth. The
location of the same shall be displayed at the Controls
booth.

Rules

● Maximum team size: 20 (including backstage helpers)


● All members putting up the play (with the exception of the
playwright) should be under the age of 25.
● The play must EXACTLY follow the script sent at the time of pre-
registration. Any deviations without prior approval of the
Department of Theatre Coordinator will result in disqualification.
● Time limit: Minimum – 30 minutes; Maximum – 60 minutes
(Empty stage to empty stage).
● The performing team will be given a warning 5 minutes prior to the
maximum time limit, and an announcement will be made to
notify the judges and audience once the maximum time limit is
exceeded. Ifthe team exceeds the maximum time limit by more than
5 minutes, curtains will be closed.
● Not adhering to the time limit will result in deduction of points from
the final score.
● Backstage helpers should not exceed 6. Two team members must
be present to provide cues for music and lights.
● Points will be deducted for vulgarity. It is insisted that scripts should
avoid the use of abusive language.
● Lighting of candles, matches or cigarettes on stage is not allowed
and will result in disqualification.
● Microphones and lights will be provided.
● Teams have to get/arrange their own props. Limited items (4 plastic
chairs and 2 folding portable tables) will be provided by the
Department of Theatre to be used as props. (Any item that is not a
part of clothing is a prop. Also, an item of clothing will be
considered a prop if it is moved from its initial position during the
performance.)
● The list of props must be submitted to the Department of Theatre.
● Rehearsal slots will be provided to each team for quick
stage familiarization prior to the commencement of the event.

Street Play
Oasis brings to you, right from the streets, a loud and larger-than-life
exchange of ideologies, with drama full of humor and zeal. Street Plays
aka Nukkad Natak, are carried out to propagate social and political
messages among the masses, amidst the direct, intimate and effective
means of theatre by means of shouts, chants, drums and catchy songs.

Registration
● Pre-registration (includes video submission).
● Submit a pdf version of your script and a video of any
previous performances to dep.of.theatre@gmail.com and
cc the same to pcr@bits-oasis.org. “<Event Name>
<College Name> - Oasis ’23Script Submission”.
● For last date for submission, check registration details or
contact the POC allocated below.
● The selected teams, once on-campus should report to the
Department of Theatre room (FD-II) with their IDs post
registration at the Controls booth.
Rules
● The play may be in either English or Hindi.
● Maximum team size : 20 members
● Maximum of two entries per college is allowed. In case of two
entries, one play should be in English and the other in Hindi.
● Time Limit: Minimum time – 15 minutes. Maximum time – 25
minutes.
● Negative points for exceeding the time limit. An introduction of
participants is necessary after the play but not included in the
time limit.
● The play must EXACTLY follow the script sent at the time of pre-

registration. Any deviations without prior approval of the
Department of Theatre Coordinator will result in disqualification.

● Points will be deducted for vulgarity.


● Use of microphones, lights and speakers by any member of the
team is not allowed.
● Makeup and body paint are allowed. However, indicative
costumes that are different from the rest of the team are not
allowed.
● No props will be provided. Teams may use props if they want, for
which prior approval from the Coordinator of Department of
Theatre is necessary. Points will be deducted for the usage of
propswithout permission. (Any item that is not a part of clothing is
a prop. Also, any item of clothing apart from chunni will be
considered a prop if it is moved from its initial position during the
performance.)
● Gulaal is allowed. However, any liquids or substance that
compromises the stage are not allowed.
● There will be a roll call for participants. No extra members are
allowed for common call.
● Teams must arrive at the venue 45 minutes before the event
starts.

MUSIC

Tarang
Tarang – a musical fusion extravaganza from the Indian heartland and
its innumerably diverse facets. Cover an existing piece, or create your
own. Come participate in our indian fusion battle of bands to claim the
title of the best band.

Registration

● Submit a 2-3 minute long video showcasing your team’s
practice routine / previous performances to
dep.of.theatre@gmail.com and cc the same to pcr@bits-
oasis.org. Subject line should be “<Event Name>
<College Name> - Oasis ’23 Video Submission”.

● The selected teams once on-campus, should report to the
Department of Theatre room (XXXX, FD-II) with their IDs
post registration at the Controls booth.
● Teams are supposed to mail the sounds inventory they
require with their college name to
dep.of.theatre@gmail.com

Rules
● Bands can perform any songs of their choice, cover or an
original composition.
● Only two bands per college are allowed with a maximum of 10
members and a minimum of 3 members per band. The two
teams could have a maximum of 3 common band members.
● Total Time Limit: 20 minutes (5 minutes for the sound check and
15 minutes for the performance.) If a team exceeds the time
allocated for sound check, the extra time taken shall be
reduced

from the performance time. An indicative announcement will be
made at the time limit of 20 minutes to notify the judges about
the extension.
● 5% of the total marks would be deducted for every extra minute.
Sounds would be cut after 23 minutes.
● Use of pre-recorded music (e.g., sequences, keyboard samples,
guitar/octapad loops) will result in disqualification.
● The songs can have lyrics from any Indian language or english, but
must be a fusion that has Indian classical as one of the music
styles.
● Purely classical numbers are not allowed. Bands should keep in
mind that Tarang is a competition for fusion music.
● Bands should bring their own instruments. Drum kit and sounds
equipment will be provided by Oasis 2022.

Judging Criteria

● Creativity
● Quality of vocals and instrumental music
● Tightness and synchronization
● Choice of the song (in case of cover; composition otherwise)
● Overall Impact

Pitch Perfect

Be it the catchy rhythm of Anna Kendrick or the calm and breezy voice
of Bobby McFerrin, experience a cappella at its best at Pitch Perfect.
With participants from over 10 institutions, Pitch Perfect is the
platform for a growing crowd of Cappella enthusiasts to face off against
each other. A battle of the bands with no instruments, this symphony
of voices at the NAB Auditorium is establishing a new dimensionality of
music vastly unexplored till date.

Registration

Rules
● One team per college, with a minimum of 4 and a
maximumof 15 members per team.
● A maximum of 8 teams can participate in the event.
● Time limit: 10 minutes, including sound check
● 5% of the total marks shall be deducted for every extra minute,

Sounds shall be cut off after 12 minutes.
● Use of any accompanying instrument is strictly not
allowed and non-compliance will lead to disqualification.
● Teams have to prepare either a medley or two pieces of their choice.
● Teams are supposed to mention the scale of the song
atthe beginning of their performances.

Judging will be based on:


· Blend, quality and tightness of harmonies and rhythm
· Interpretation of the piece
· Creativity
· Dynamics
· Pitch accuracy
· Arrangement

SWARANJALI (SOLO)

Swaranjali Solo is an Indian ClassicalMusic


competition. It consists of 3 subcategories:
Vocal, Percussion andMelody. Swaranjali Solo
is an event for classical music enthusiasts who
wish to get a stage to perform and understand
where they stand amongthe multitude of
participants who come from across India for
the competition

Swaranjali Group is a Classical music


competition for choirs and groups ofclassical
music enthusiasts who wishto get a platform to
express their artform.

SWARANJALI – RULES

Swaranjali is a classical music competition. Participants trained in the


vocal and instrumental aspects of both Carnatic and Hindustani styles
are invited to compete. (Instruments: violin, sitar, veena, flute,
Hawaiian guitar, tabla, mridangam, ghatam, keyboard, harmonium,
kanjira, sarangi and sarod.)
REGISTRATION
● On-spot registration and pre-registration (both individual and
group).
● There may be a preliminary round involving online video
submissions prior to the competition. Details of this will be
communicated to you with ample notice.
● Individual and group participants will be judged separately.

RULES
● Performances in any form other than Indian classical music will
lead to disqualification
● Arriving over 20 minutes late to the assigned time will result in a
deduction of points.

Individual participation
● Instrumentalists, mainly percussionists, who might
accompany other participants during their performances,
shall not be judged while accompanying.
● Participants may compete in one of three categories:
○ Vocal
○ Instrumental (String and Wind)
○ Instrumental (Percussion)
● Participants will be awarded points under different criteria
based on their performance including clarity of rendition,
taal, knowledge of the respective Raga and creativity.

● Contestants for instrumental music are expected to bring their
own instruments.
● Time duration: 5 minutes (minimum) to 10 minutes
(maximum). Exceeding the time limit of 10 minutes will invite
deduction of points.
● Improvisations like alaap, tans/kalpana swarams, jod/taanam will
be given due merit.
● Performance in any other style, including light music, will lead to
disqualification.
● There can be a maximum of 5 individual participants from
the same college. (3 vocals + 2 instrumental)

Group Participation
● The maximum number of participants allowed in a group is
12 (excluding accompanying artists which can only be a
maximum of 3).
● Time duration: 5 minutes (minimum) to 10 minutes
(maximum). Exceeding the time limit of 10 minutes will invite
deduction of points.
● Groups will be awarded points under different criteria based
on their performance including synchronization, rendition of
raga and creativity.
● Performance in any other style, including light music, will lead to
disqualification.

● Exceeding the time limit by more than 30 seconds will invite
deduction of points.
● In the second round, participants will be given a theme as well
as a track which they have to choreograph. This track will be
given in advance and time slots for a practice room will also be
provided (Groups are requested to contact the Ragamalika
coordinator after registering at the Controls booth). Groups will
have to present their choreographed piece and will be judged
on the basis of creativity, interpretation of theme, coordination
and choreography.

Fashion is an art, a religion, a peek into a personality. For some, it’s an


escape or a disguise while for others it’s just being comfortable. But
ultimately, fashion is an individual statement of expression for each of
us and Fashion Parade is the avenue to express yourself. The epilog of
one's pursuit of fashion and style. With the stage set for ingenious
designers to parade their stunning models in their own never-seen-
before designs, it will be an ethereal experience for all.

Registration

Rules
● Only one entry per college.
● A maximum of 15 teams can participate in the event.
● There can be a maximum of 15 participants in each team. There
can be up to 8 backstage helpers and, at most 2 helpers among

these 8 for giving sounds and lights cues.
● All participants need not be on stage at the same time.
● The theme for the event will be declared a month prior to the
competition, the theme will be broad, and points will be awarded for
portraying the genre well.
● No props shall be provided, teams can bring props, but a list of props
must be provided at the time of on-campus registration.
● Time limit: 15 minutes (Curtain to curtain, including the time
for change of clothes). Points will be deducted for exceeding the
time limit.
● All teams have to submit a moodboard before the start of the
event, in printed form. The moodboard can include style and
design inspiration taken for the team’s costumes. It should
depict the specific theme portrayed by the team and judges will
refer toit during the performance.
● On-stage practice slots (subject to availability of slots and
schedule of the event; completely under the discretion of the
Coordinator Department of Theatre) will be provided for the
teams. Teams are expected to use them for stage familiarization,
finalizing light cues, etc.
● Emphasis will be given to apparel, portrayal and originality.
● Two individuals must be present to provide cues for music and
lights. (These two individuals are not counted as part of the 12
team members.)
● The lighting of candles, matches or cigarettes on stage is not
allowed and will result in disqualification. Any damage to the
stage or spilling something will lead to elimination.
● A T-shaped extension will be provided to the stage. Both the
stage and the extension may be used as the walking ramp.
● Teams are required to have confirmed their participation in
advance via email.
● Teams must bring a pen-drive containing their sound track. The
soundtrack should be in .mp3 format and the same should be

submitted in advance.

DANCE

Choreo

Choreo is a dance event which features contemporary dance


performances by teams from colleges around the country. This event is
conducted in the central auditorium. After the initial elimination round,
about six to eight teams are shortlisted for the final round. The final
round features contemporary dance performances that are usually
based on a certain theme.

Registration

● Pre-registration (includes video submission).


● Submit a 2-3 minute long video showcasing your team’s practice
routine/previous performances to dep.of.theatre@gmail.com
and cc the same to pcr@bits-oasis.org. Subject line of the email
should be “<Event Name> <College Name> - Oasis ’22 Video
Submission”.

● There will be an elimination round based on the number of
registered teams
● Folk and classical dances are not allowed.
● Lyrics are not allowed in the sound track. Only short and concise
voiceovers (1-3 sentences long) are allowed during the
performance. Also, a short write-up describing the theme may be
read before the performance. The write-up should be in printed
form.
● Use of props is allowed but the list of the props should be
submitted and approved by the coordinator of Department of
Theatre once the troupe arrives on campus premises. (Any
item that is not a part of clothing is a prop. Also, an item of
clothing will be considered a prop if it is moved from its initial
position during the performance.
● Items such as powders/liquids/gulaal during performance that
could make the stage unfit for the subsequent performance can
leadto disqualification. The stage should be maintained as it was
before the start of the performance. Negative points for
compromising thestage in any way.
● On-Stage rehearsal slots will be provided to the short listed
teams. Teams are expected to use these slots for finalizing lights
cues and stage presence.
● Backstage helpers should not exceed 6. Two team members must
be present to provide cues for music and lights.
● Lighting of candles, matches or cigarettes on stage is not allowed
and will result in disqualification.
● Teams must bring a pen-drive containing their sound track. The
soundtrack should be in .mp3 format.
● Teams are advised to get their own music systems for practice.

Street Dance

As the name suggests, Street Dance is a street-style dance event which


features performances by teams from colleges around the country.
StreetDance is considered a crowd favorite and is held in the Rotunda,
the open- air amphitheater of BITS. After the initial elimination round,
about eight to ten teams are shortlisted for the final round. The
firststage of the final round features street-style performances by the
participating teams. The second stage of the final round is a face-off
challenge between pairs of teams. These pairs are allotted randomly.

● Submit a 2-3 minute long video showcasing your team’s
practice routine/previous performances to

Rules

● Minimum 5 and maximum 14 dancers per team.


● One entry per college
● The duration of the performance should be 5-10 min, for
bothelimination and final round.
● The time duration for the face-off battle in the final round
willbe announced before the start of the event.
● Teams must bring a pen-drive containing their soundtrack and
the team should ensure that they submit the music file in
advanceto a representative of the Department of Theatre. The
soundtrackshould be in .mp3 format.
● Teams should bring their own portable music systems for practice.
● Items such as powders/liquids/gulaal during performance that
could make the stage unfit for performing for the next team can
lead to disqualification. The dance floor area must be in the
same condition after the performances as before.
● No props will be provided. Teams may use props if they want, for
which prior permission from the Coordinator of Department of
Theatre is necessary. Negative points for usage of props without
permission.
● There will be an elimination round from which the top teams will
be selected for the finals.
● The final round will also include a face-off battle as well in
addition to individual performance by teams. The teams will
compete against each other in pairs in the face-off battle.
● Participants should show the freestyle form of street dance.
Power movements, acrobatics and such are admissible, but
they should not form a major part of the performance.
● Interaction with the audience members is appreciated, however
violation of the allotted dancing area by any member of the

team in NOT allowed.

● Dancers are not restricted from performing any move but they
must be aware that it is their own responsibility to ensure that
they do not perform dangerous moves that could injure
themselves or others. The Coordinator, Department of Theatre
reserves the right to bring in safety restrictions.
● The format for the battle round of Street Dance is as follows
○ Each individual team shall be given 2 mins each for
performing against the other team. The opposite team shall
not be allowed to perform any dance routine in this slot.
○ Subsequently, both teams shall have a 2 slots of 1 min each,
during which they can faceoff.
○ The music for the battle round will be different for each
teamand randomly allocated by the Department of Theatre.
Any grievances regarding the allotment of music will not be
entertained.
○ Both teams will dance to the same song for 1 min each,
after which a new song will be played and the order of
teams will be reversed.
● Lighting of candles, matches or cigarettes on stage is not allowed
and will result in disqualification.
● In case of situations which have not been described in rules,
decision taken by judges will be final.

Razzmatazz

The Razzmatazz Group Dance Competition is a one-of-


a-kind event that showcases coordinated group
choreographies and testsdancers' dexterity as well as
their artistic ability. It is designed to assess the esprit de
corps of the competing teams by giving equal weight in
the judging process to each of the three categories of
execution, presentation, and creativity. All styles of
dance, including fusions, are welcome at thisevent.
Therefore, you should step on the light fantastic toe,
and there should be a razzle-dazzle of utter splendour.

REGISTRATION: Pre-Registered

RULES
Razzmatazz is a one-of-its-kind group dance competition that tests finesse and artistry in
showcasing coordinated group choreographies. With equal weightage in judgement
given to execution, presentation and creativity, it is fashioned to test the esprit de corps
of the participating teams. All forms of dance including fusions are allowed. So trip the
light fantastic toe and let there be a razzle-dazzle of sheer splendor.

PRE-OASIS ELIMINATIONS:
Pre-registration (includes video submission). Team participation.
Submit a 2-3 minute long video showcasing your team’s practice routine/previous

Qualified teams will go for next rounds (during Oasis). There will be another elimination
round during Oasis.
DURING OASIS:
General0 Rules

Maximum team strength allowed is 25 dancers.


On stage maximum 14 members allowed at a time. Rest can rotate between rounds.
A maximum of 22 teams can participate in the event.
The final event will consist of 3 rounds.
Elimination Round
Time limit (excluding briefing time) – Max: 7 min. Min: 3
min.

All forms of dance allowed. Fusion allowed.


Minimum six dancers on stage, no lead dancer, no solo
performance, Weightage for costumes, music,
choreography and coordination.
Negative marking on exceeding time limit and disqualification on exceeding the number
of participants. Participants are requested to email their audio in mp3 formats to the
organizers. No audio cassettes will be allowed.
Teams will be judged on the basis of their own prepared sequence.
Teams need to show all the props which they might be using in their performance. Props
using fire are strictly prohibited.

Teams also need to show all costumes they will be wearing for their performance.
FINALS:
Round 1: Showcase
Maximum of 10 teams can qualify for this round.

The participating team will have to repeat the same performance given during
elimination round (Round0)
Same rules as Round 0 apply
Round 2: Footloose(On
the Spot)

The music will keep changing, you will have to adapt to the music.
Organizers will provide music on the spot.

There will have to be at least 7 dancers on stage at all times.


Time limit: Max: 3 min, Min: 1 min (Left to the discretion of the organizers)

Weightage will be given for adaptation to change of music and pace of beat,
coordination and choreography . No props allowed.

Round 3: Prop Round (Improvised use of


props)The organizers will provide props
and music.

Props will be decided through lots at the end of


Round 1. There will have to be at least 7 dancers
on stage at all times.

DESERT DUEL

It is a solo dance event in which dancers from


every college participate and showcase their
talent.
Depending on the dancer, styles can
vary from western to classical to hiphop and even to the typicalBollywood style.

 The event comprises of

Eliminations:
 Prepared Sequence

 All forms of dance allowed.
 Weightage for costume, music, choreography.
 Fusion is allowed.
 Disqualification on exceeding time limit.
 Weightage will be given for props. However, prior permission is
required for theirusage.
 E-mail the music to the organizers at the time of registration for the
dance.
 No audio cassettes will be allowed.
 NOTE: Props using fire are strictly prohibited and will lead to
disqualification.

Finals
Finals Round 1: Solo Dance
 A maximum of 9 participants ca qualify for this round.
 The participant will have to repeat the performance given during
elimination round.

Finals Round 2: Theme Round (On the Spot theme presentation)

 The participant must portray a theme through dance.
 Organizers will provide music and 15 min to prepare.
 Theme will be decided through lots at the end of Round 1.
 Time limit: Max: 2 min, Min: 1 min (Left to the discretion of the
organizers)
 Weightage will be given for presentation of
theme, innovation, choreography,expressions.
 Usage of any kind of props will lead to disqualification.

Finals Round 3: Last Man Standing


 STAGE 1: The participants will be divided into groups (3 participants
per group). Group-wise, every group will start dancing to the same
music together on stage. One member from each group will be
selected for stage 2.
 STAGE 2: The people who have entered into stage 2 will also be
grouped now into groups of three and the same process continues
till we finally have one last person standing. The last person
standing will have the maximum number of points and the others
will be marked relatively. The later he/she gets eliminated the more
number of points he/she will get.
 The winner of last man standing round will not be the overall
winner. The overall winner of the event will be decided on the basis
of cumulative score of all 3 rounds.

TANDAV

Tandav is a classical dance competition. It invites participants trained in


Odissi, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, Manipuri, Kathakali,
Mohiniattam and Sattriya.

REGISTRATION
● Individual and group participants will be judged separately.
● On-spot registration (individual)/Pre-registration (group and
individual).
● There may be a preliminary round involving online video
submissions prior to the competition. Details of this will be
communicated to you with ample notice.

RULES
● Participants are expected to perform in full costume, which
should be brought by them.
● Participants shall be evaluated in different rounds. No round is
optional. Participants should not switch styles in between
rounds.
● Arriving over 20 minutes late to the assigned time will result in a
deduction of points.

Individual participation :
● There will be 3 rounds which comprise of:
o Laya, the first round, is a recital in the respective style for a
maximum of 7 minutes. Participants should bring the music
track to which they are going to dance on their own USB
drive/CD/mobiles. No audio cassettes are allowed. Exceeding
the time limit by more than 30 seconds will invite deduction of
points.

o Rasa, the second round, is a depiction of a given situation
for 2 minutes, the track for which shall be provided a few
minutes before the round.
o Tala, the third
round, is about Performing to a 30 second
percussion sequence which shall be made known a few
minutes before the round.
● Rounds 2 and 3 involve extempore choreography.
● Participants will be awarded points under different criteria
based on their performance including detail of expressions,
Taal sense, creativity and clarity in rendition.
● There can be a maximum of 3 individual participants from the
same college.

Group Participation:
● In the first round, groups will be judged on the basis of their
own prepared sequence. Groups will be awarded points under
different criteria based on their performance including
choreography, coordination, formations and rhythm sense.
● Time limit for the first round – 7 to 10 mins.
● Maximum number of people per group: 6
● Groups should bring the music track to which they are going
to dance on their own USB drive/CD/mobiles. No audio
cassettes are allowed.

Oasis. This event is also a kernel event for Oasis.

METAMORPHOSIS INSTRUCTIONS

Metamorphosis is a theme based short film making competition, where


aspiring filmmakers showcase their talent through their aesthetic
sense, ingenuity, perspective and emotion. Every year we get multiple
entries and the best of them are selected for the final round during
Oasis.

1) Metamorphosis is open for participation by any team from any


of the colleges registeredin India.

2) Each team can consist of a maximum of 10 members (excluding


cast).

3) The finished short film must be a minimum of 4 minutes in


duration, and a maximum of12 minutes - not including end
credits.

4) Editing, Cinematography, Script (originality), Acting, Sound


Design and Relevance totheme will be the criteria for judging.

5) The short film must adhere to the theme of Metamorphosis.

6) The opening slate, bearing the following disclaimer - “This is an


official entry for Metamorphosis 2023”, the short film name and
the team name must run for 5 seconds before the start of the
video.

7) Teams are open to choose the language of their comfort. All

films, irrespective of thelanguage, must contain embedded
English Subtitles.

8) The end credits must include the name of all the members of the
team along with contact number and email address of the team
leader.

9) All entries should be completely original and independently


produced. Content and ideas should be original. The participating
teams themselves will be responsible for any third- party claim for
copyright infringement.

10) For being eligible for the challenge, the film must not contain
any material that hurts or violates someone’s personal rights,
religious beliefs, incites violence or creates derogatory remarks
about someone’s sexuality or belief. The film must not invade
privacy or other rights of a person, firm or entity.

11) Organizers solely reserve the right to screen the short film.

12) Decision of the judges will be final and binding.

13) Submission:
All entries must be submitted in the form of Google Drive Link. The
Drive must contain the short film and PDF file bearing a 100 word
description of the short film, team name,team members name and
their contact information.

Following format should be used for naming the Google Drive, the video
file and the PDF file
: Meta_FilmName_TeamName

All entries will be received via mail on the following email address:
