Preface/Outline of the Subject

The works of sociologists and jurists at the turn of the 20th century can be used

to trace the origins of the sociology of law. Max Weber and Emil Durkheim

both conducted social studies that examined the connection between the law and

society. The foundation of modern legal sociology is found in the works of early

sociologists of law. Law and sociology are related in such a way that one cannot

exist without the other. Sociology and society are closely intertwined, and each

society has its own set of laws in this regard. Laws are thus a fundamental

component of civilization. Sociology aids in the ability of law to better

comprehend society for easier regulation and law-making. The law also plays a

crucial role in regulating society. If there was no law, then society would be

nothing less than a jungle. Laws were created because people require rules and

regulations to keep them on track. These laws are made and established by

society as a whole, or they are created by elected governments. This course

helps to understand every perspectives related to law and society.

2.0 Objectives of the Course

1.. To have knowledge and understanding of the main concepts and principles
of criminology, sociology of crime and deviance and sociology of Punishment.

2.To give a basic understanding of sociological background of crime and
deviance.

3. To examines the risk and protective factors that are believed to influence
the developmental pathways on the road to delinquency and crime.

4. To examine the behavioural, emotional and cognitive aspects of crime

focusing primarily on the offender but occasionally on the victim as well.

5. To learn the factors and conditions contributing to delinquency.

6. To understand about various forms of crimes and about crime prevention.

7. To study the prevention and control strategies of crime.

8. To explain students the application of psychology in understanding crime

and delinquency.

Course Learning Outcome:

 This course explains about the history, origin, scope and definition of crime,
its relevance in the present scenario and its relation to law and other social
sciences.

 Students will understand the interdisciplinary nature of Criminology,
sociology and law and the understand various concepts related to crime and
deviance and analyse the nature of it.

 It enables students to examine and critically identify the contribution of each

school of thought for the growth and development of Criminology.

 This course will enable students to understand the different typologies of

crime including crimes against body, crimes against property, contemporary
crimes like cybercrime, white collar crime, etc

.  Students can apply the concept of crime and criminal behaviour to

understand juvenile delinquency.

This course explains the different concepts and methods of crime

prevention.
