Myth of Khazan
In life, Khazan was a wizard hired by Lord Strahd von Zarovich as the court wizard and counsel during the
great war.

Khazan lived on a small island on Lake Baratok, where he constructed a tower and had a causeway of
earth, gravel, and sand connect to his island from the mainland.

Khazan learned that Lord Strahd von Zarovich only interest in the wizard was to learn his magic and
power, for Lord Strahd never sought his counsel and only inquired about magic and information on the
Amber Temple.

Khazan was fooled and shared all he had learned about the Amber Temple and its powers. When Khazan
learned Lord Strahd had used him to; gain power for himself, gain the secrets of Argynvost to slay the
dragon, and to learn of the dark powers at the Amber Temple, thus making a pack and becoming a
vampire, Khazan fled.

Khazan had secretly become a lich at the Amber Temple, he fled to his tower on the island. Casting
magic spells and traps on the tower to protect himself from the Dark Lord Strahd, he secretly planned
his escape from Barovia.

Khazan fled Barovia, dressed as a monk. His disguise was discovered at the Abbey in Krezk and he was
turned over to Lord Strahd's minions.

Khazan was brought to Castle Ravenloft to answer for his treachery, refusing to answer, Khazan had one
last attempt to free himself and cast a final spell to become a demilich hoping to send his consciousness
beyond the veil.

Khazan had not realized Lord Strahd had learned his secret of becoming a lich and when he attempted
to escape as a demilich, Lord Strahd cursed Khazan and is said to have destroyed him.

Khazan's skeletal remains now lie in the crypts of Castle Ravenloft. It is said Khazan's skull contains
valuable gems and used as a source of dark magic. It is said that if you quietly pray, saying his name and
seeking his vengeance by the ancient shrine at Pillarstone of Ravenloft it will cause Khazan's magical
staff to appear as a gift to strike down Lord Strahd. His staff is said to be dangerous and only those
strong enough can harness its power.

Whether Khazan's consciousness escaped the clutches of Lord Strahd and Barovia is unknown. Some
believe his spirit wanders Barovia and perhaps his tower on the lake. Others believe his spirit haunts the
Amber Temple seeking a spell to lift his curse. There are stories that Khazan's spirit lurks in Castle
Ravenloft, captured to an eternal fate never too far from his crypt.

Khazan's tower has remained empty for centuries. It is said to be guarded by powerful magic and traps;
some believe the tower is haunted by his spirit.
