Essay Questions

Please respond to the following questions. Use as much space as needed, and continue on to
the next page if necessary.

1. What course of study will you pursue at your chosen institution and why have you
chosen this field?

I will be choosing between studying education or ag business at a four year school. I have
narrowed my choice down to these two options because of my passion for both. My dad is an
agronomist who works out of Henderson, Nebraska and he has helped me by showing me
agriculture from a very young age. I have always been involved in ag and I have always found it
very interesting. Going out to take soil samples or ride in the combines with his customers has
been my favorite part and I could definitely see myself doing such when I am on my own.
Education has kind of just popped out to me recently. I never really thought about teaching but
the more I think about it the more it seems to grow on me. Although I do not know which grade I
would be interested in teaching, I do think it would be a pretty good fit for me. I have been tod
that I work well with kids and that would give me the opportunity to do so. Teaching would also
give me the opportunity to coach as well. I am very interested in sports and teaching would give
me a chance to stay close to the sports I love.

2. Briefly describe the school and community activities in which you have been
involved.

I have been involved in many sports and activities throughout my time at York High School.
During my time on the football team I have learned leadership, teamwork, and hard work.
Leadership is something that Coach Snodgrass preaches every day at practice. I think it has
rubbed off on me in many ways, as I was named as a captain during my senior year. I take this
role very seriously and try to make sure that I am always encouraging my teammates instead of
bringing them down. In wrestling I have learned some other different leadership skills and also
hot to balance my time more. In wrestling the leadership roles are very important because the
practices are so tough. You need to make sure that you are keeping everyone going and make
sure they’re doing their best, while also building them up instead of tearing them down. I have
also learned that you must manage your time wisely, especially during wrestling season. Since
there are so many tournaments and duals during the season spread throughout the whole week
it is very tough to stay up to date with your school work. In football the games are only played on
Friday but during wrestling they can be spread out throughout the week, making it tougher. FFA
has been an activity I’ve been very involved with. I have helped out throughout the city of York
and with the school as well. I have had a lot of volunteer work with the National Honor Society
as well.

3. Give an example of someone whom you admire, and explain why you admire that
person.

I have always admired my dad. He is always somebody that I can go to for advice or just when I
am not sure about something. He always brings me to work with him whenever I ask. The way
he takes care of our family is something that I want to replicate whenever I have a family of my
own. He is always at my sporting events and is very supportive of everything that I do. Overall
as a father, my dad is very supportive, charismatic, and a great leader. He supports not only me
but also my brothers in sports, school, and life in general. The way he supports our family is
admirable and something that I’d really like to mirror in the future for my own family. My dad is
the most caring man in the world to me. He always wants to hangout with me or teach me
something new, or just toss a football around in the backyard.

4. Describe your life as you visualize it ten years from now.

I see myself in 10 years as being a successful agronomist somewhere close to York or being a
teacher somewhere here in Nebraska. I plan to have a wife and maybe a kid or two by then.
Hopefully if I do choose the agriculture route, I can come back home and work under my father.
I already have seen what he does at work and I can see myself doing such. Teaching is also
another route I can see myself going. I have done some hours shadowing at YES and that does
not sound too bad to me. I do like working with kids and it keeps me thinking about my options.
