STEP 2: CITY OFFICE (STADTBÜRO)
• Book an appointment with the Stadtbüro for registration
• You need your passport/identity card, confirmation of
tenancy and when applicable, your residence
permit (Aufenthaltstitel) and previous certificates of
registration (Meldebestätigung) for the registration.
• You will receive your certificate of registration onsite.
• After 7-10 working days, you will receive a letter with your
11-digit personal tax identification number (Steuer-ID
aka. Persönliche Identifikationsnummer) -> keep this letter
safe!

STEP 3: BANK
• You will need the following documents
for opening an account
(Kontoeröffnung): certificate of
registration, Steuer-ID,
passport/identity card, and residence

• If you have a blocked account and would like to release the
funds in it, you will need a confirmation from the immigration
authorities (Ausländerbehörde).
• Some banks do require an appointment. Do check in with them
beforehand!

STEP 4: INSURANCE
• Take up a health insurance
plan at a public health
insurance provider
(gesetzliche Krankenkasse).
You need to be insured as

• You will usually need: passport/identity card, admission
letter from the university and bank account details.

send a digital insurance
notification, a so-called
M10, to JLU using the JLU
company number:

advice at the International Office first, before you sign any
contracts!

STEP 5: IMMIGRATION AUTHORITIES
• For students in Giessen: Approximately two months
before you residence permit expires, you will receive a
letter from the Immigration Office. This letter includes a
list of the documents required for the extension and an
application form.
• If you don’t receive any letter, please contact the
immigration authorities two weeks before your residence
permit expires.
