b. Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
c. A is true but R is false.
d. A is false but R is true.

8. Assertion (A): A normal human eye can clearly see all the objects beyond a certain minimum distance.
Reason (R): The human eye has the capacity to adjust suitably the focal length of its lens to a certain
extent.
9. Assertion (A): The sky looks dark and black instead of blue in outer space.
Reason (R): There is no air in the outer space to scatter the sunlight.
10. Assertion (A): White light is dispersed into its seven-colour components by a prism.
Reason (R): Different colours of light bend through different angles with respect to the incident ray as
they pass through a prism.
11. Assertion (A): The resolving power of a telescope is more if the diameter of the objective lens is more.

DO THE ASSIGNMENT 2 OF CHAPTER 2 IN A4 SIZE RULE SHEETS

Q1. To. a solution of sodium hydroxide in a test tube, two drops of phenolphthalein are added.
(i) State the colour change observed.
(ii) If dil HCl is added dropwise to the solution, what will be the colour change?
(iii) On adding few drops of NaOH solution to the above mixture the colour of the solution reappears.
Why?
Answer:
(i) On adding phenolphthalein to NaOH solution, the colour becomes pink.
(ii) On adding dilute HCl solution dropwise to the same test tube, the pink colour disappears and the
solution again becomes colourless.
(iii) On again adding NaOH to the above mixture, pink colour reappears because the medium
becomes basic again.
Q2. (a) Write the chemical name and formula of marble.
(b) It has been found that marbles of Taj are getting corroded due to development of industrial areas
around it. Explain this fact giving a chemical equation.
(c) What happens when CO2 is passed in excess through lime?
Answer:
(a) The chemical formula of marble (limestone) is CaCO3. Its chemical name is calcium carbonate.
(b) Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world situated at Agra, is continuously losing its lustre
day by day due to rapid industrialisation which causes acid rain.
The sulphuric acid present in the acid rain causes the marble (CaCO3) to be washed off as
calcium sulphate (CaSO4), leading to the deterioration of such a splendid piece of architecture.
CaCO3(s) + H2SO4(aq) → CaSO4(aq) + H2O + CO2(g)
(c) If CO2 is passed for long duration through lime water, the white precipitate formed dissolves due
to the formation of soluble calcium hydrogen carbonate and the solution becomes clear.

Q3. Explain why an aqueous solution of ammonium chloride is acidic in nature.

Answer:
Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) is the salt of a strong acid, hydrochloric acid (HCl), and a weak base
ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH), so an aqueous solution of ammonium chloride is acidic in nature.
Q4. Plaster of Paris should be stored in moisture proof container. Explain why?
Answer:
Plaster of Paris reacts with moisture and gets hardened due to formation of gypsum so it is stored in
moisture proof container.
Q5. Write the modern definition of acid and base. Give one example of each.
Answer:
acid : Those substances which give hydrogen ions (H+) or hydronium ions (H3 O+) on dissociation in
aqueous solution are called acids, e.g. HCl (aq) ⇌ H+ + C1–
Base : Those substances which give hydroxide ions (OH–) on Dissociation or ionisation in aqueous
solution are called bases, e.g. NaOH (aq) ⇌ Na+ + OH–
Strong acids HCl, H2SO4, HNO3
Weak Bases NH4OH.Al(OH)3
Q6. What is pH value? Describe its importance in our daily life:
Answer:
pH Scale: It is a scale used for measuring hydrogen ion concentration. The p in pH stands for potenz
which means power in German.
It has values ranging from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very alkaline). Thus, pH is a number which indicates the
acidic or basic nature of a solution.
Importance in everyday life:
(1) Plants and Animals are pH sensitive: Living organisms can survive only in a narrow range of pH
change, our body works normally within a pH range of 7 to 7.8.
(2) pH in Our Digestive System: HCl present in the stomach helps is the digestion of food. During
indigestion the stomach produces too much acid, it causes pain and irritation.
Q7. List in tabular form two differences between an acid and a base based on their chemical properties.
