Experiment Topic: Investigating the Effects of Different Music Genres on Plant
Growth
ASKING QUESTIONS
What am I trying to investigate? What is my question?
Does playing different music genres to plants have an impact on their growth and
overall health?
PREDICTING WHAT WILL HAPPEN
I think that... Classical music will have a positive effect on plant growth, promoting
healthier and taller plants.
My reason is that... Classical music is often associated with relaxation and harmony,
which may positively influence plant growth through reduced stress.
PLANNING MY INVESTIGATION-PROCEDURE
I will need:
> Several identical plant pots with soil and seeds
> A source of classical music.
> A source of heavy metal music
> A source of silence (control group).
> Uniform lighting conditions
> Watering schedule and amount.
What am I going to change?
The type of music played to the plants
What am I going to keep the same?
The type of plants, soil, and initial conditions
The size and type of pots
Lighting and temperature conditions
Watering schedule and amount
What am I going to measure?
Plant height
Number of leaves
Overall health and appearance
What am I going to do?
1. Plant seeds in identical pots
2. Label each pot with the type of music it will be exposed to (Classical, Heavy Metal,
or Silence).
3. Place all pots in a controlled environment with uniform lighting and temperature
4. Water the plants according to set a schedule.
5. Play the designated music to each group of plants for a specific period each day.
6. Monitor and record plant growth, leaf count, and overall health regularly.
I will be careful of:
Ensuring that all other conditions, except for the music, remain constant.
Avoiding contamination between the groups.
Accurate measurement and recording of data.
MAKING OBSERVATIONS
How can I make my observations accurate?
Ensure consistent lighting and temperature conditions.
Use the same person to measure plant height and leaf count.
Regularly inspect and note any changes in plant health and appearance
Which measuring devices can I use?
Ruler or measuring tape for paint height.
Counting tool for leaf count.
Visual inspection for overall health.
RECORDING RESULTS
How will I make my results neat and tidy?
Use a data table to record measurements.
Create a chart or graph to visualize the data.
Will I use a table? Yes, to record measurements and observations.
Will I draw a chart or a graph?
Yes, to visualize the growth patterns and differences between music genres.
MAKING SENSE OF MY RESULTS
Can I see any patterns?
Look for patterns in plant growth, leaf count and overall health among the different
music group.
Are any results unusual? Pay attention to any unexpected or unusual results.
Do the results support my prediction? Evaluate whether classical music had a posiive
effect on plant growth as predicted.
How could I make my investigation more accurate?
Increase the sample size by using more plants.
Extend the duration of the experiment to observe long term effects.
Repeat the experiment multiple times to ensure consistency.
Other questions I could ask myself...
Could other music genres or environmental factors also impact plant growth?
Are there any specific physiological mechanisms that might explain the observed
effects?
How might this experiment be relevant to other areas, such as agriculture or
horticulture?
