This course on Biomedical Equipment Technician Training: Maintenance
& Repair you will learn as the title already indicates about working
principles, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of biomedical
equipment. You will learn skills to perform maintenance routines and
diagnose problems in sophisticated medical equipment.

Besides being able to read materials in English, not much basic prior
knowledge is necessary. The course will provide information on basic
physiology and engineering theory necessary to understand the working
principles of the explained medical devices.
The overall aim of the course is to provide you with sufficient basic
knowledge so that you, with only a little hands-on training, are able to
support hospitals in maintaining and repairing their medical equipment.
Moreover, we hope that you will become enthusiastic about this subject,
and maybe choose a formal education in this subject. This is important
because many hospitals, especially in low resource settings have many
medical devices that are not functioning well anymore.

           2. Learning objectives
So, what will you actually learn in this course? At the end of this course,
           you will be able to:
understand the function of medical devices through basic knowledge of
             physiology and engineering;
read and understand medical device user guides and maintenance
             manuals;
             maintain and calibrate medical equipment so that it will remain working;
             analyse and troubleshoot a medical device and know how to repair it;
work safely on a device and know when a device is safe to use.

The course is organized in 7 modules over 7 weeks. Module 1 discusses a
few general principles that will come in handy when learning more about
some devices, and modules 2-7 will each discuss medical devices from a
different subcategory. Note that the complexity of devices differ and
therefore also the amount of time needed to study the material differ per
device. In the following few pages we will further explain what will be
discussed in each of these modules.
A brief summary of each unit is presented below. Detailed instructions and
resources will be provided during the course.
           Week 1. Module 0 and Module 1
Module 0 - Introduction to Edx
In the Getting Started section you’ll get to know the course structure,
get familiarized with the virtual learning environment, complete your
profile, meet your fellow students and the moderator. These
introductory tasks should be completed in the beginning of the course,
                    after your first login.
Module 1 - Physiology and Scientific principles
Module 1 - Physiology and Scientific Principles, will introduce you to
the physiology and engineering/physics needed to understand -and
work with- certain devices. Key components will be explained and
knowledge acquired will be tested with interactive assessments, but
more importantly, these assessments will help you understand the
                    theory

                    Module 2 - Maintenance/diagnosis/repair of Diagnostic medical
                    equipment (1)
Equipment is only functional when working properly. In order to
guarantee functioning equipment, the device must be understood and
several steps must be undertaken on both a regular and unexpected
                    basis.
In Module 2, we will elaborate on the ultrasonography system, the X-
ray system, and the otoscope. For all these devices we will explain (1)
the Basics of the device; Device and Components, we will teach (2)
how to perform Preventive Maintenance and we will make you master
performing (3) troubleshooting, repair and testing of that particular
device. The module is divided into two parts, one covering the
extensive device of the patient monitor, and the other one covering the
ultrasonography system, the X-ray system and the otoscope.
           Week 3. Module 3
Module 3 - Maintenance/diagnosis/repair of Diagnostic medical equipment
                    (2): The Patient Monitor
In Module 3 the patient monitor will be a case-study to apply all the obtained
                    knowledge in detail.
           Week 4. Module 4
Module 4 - Repair, Maintenance and Diagnosis of Therapeutic Instruments (1)
In Module 4 we will elaborate on therapeutic instruments. These include
ventilators, operation theatre lights, oxygen concentrators. This module will also
focus on the basics of each device, the preventive maintenance, and the
troubleshooting and repair of each device.

In Module 7 we will elaborate on miscellaneous instruments. Here, we
will mostly focus on devices used in a laboratory setting. The devices
we will discuss are: Microscope, Electrolyte analyser, Blood cell
                    counter, Incubator
                    Final Assessment
The last part of the course consists of the Final Assessment. Here, you
will be asked multiple questions to test your knowledge and skills
concerning the devices and topics taught in the course.
