Publishers of California Legal Materials
There are a number of major publishers of California legal materials, often called "treatises". You should be aware of the following:
Bancroft-Whitney (http://west.thomson.com ) is a brand owned by West, a Thomson Reuters business and publishes a number of
treatises in substantive areas under the general series title Bancroft-Whitney California Civil Practice.
CEB - Continuing Education of the Bar - (http://ceb.com) is a nonprofit organization jointly sponsored by the State Bar and the Uni-
versity of California publishing on a wide range of practice areas. CEB’s popular ―Action Guides‖ provide detailed practice-oriented
guidance. CEB OnLaw is the online platform for all CEB publications.
Matthew Bender (http://www.lexisnexis.com/store/us/) is a brand owned by LexisNexis publishing California materials in a wide
range of topics including business organizations, litigation, transactional, employment and environmental – all titles are also availa-
ble online through Lexis.
Rutter Group (http://www.ruttergroup.com) is a brand owned by West, a Thomson Reuters business and publishes the California
Practice Guide series in a variety of specialized topics. All Rutter Group titles are available online through Westlaw.
Witkin Legal Institute (http://www.witkin.com/) and West, a Thomson Reuters business, jointly publish the leading California
―Witkin‖ treatises also available online through Lexis and Westlaw.
Search Tips for California Practice Materials
Most California practice materials (―treatises‖) have useful finding aids to help you find your topic. Look for the index, table of stat-
utes/regulations or table of cases to locate on-point content especially when you have a keyword, statute (code section), regulation
or case name as a starting point. Also, most treatises come with detailed table of contents, often resembling a legal outline, and
you should examine these carefully to spot any related topics — you will find these in the initial pages of the treatise or at the start
of each chapter (or both). Reliance on keyword searching means that the online versions of treatises may not contain all of the
finding aids (index, table of statutes/regulations, table of cases) provided in the print format, it really depends on the publisher.

California Court Rules
Rules of Court are jurisdiction-specific and contain detailed requirements and additional information such as definitions/terminology, com-
putation of time, effective date of filing, timing/deadlines and format specifications for papers filed with the court. It is critical to become
proficient in the rules that apply to the court involved the matter you are researching and to keep up with changes made to the rules.

California Judicial Profiles
Once a judge has been assigned to active litigation, it is a good idea to seek out biographical information on the judge. A couple of pub-
lishers make available such judicial profiles. Also, Lexis & Westlaw have created online tools to generate judicial profile reports on the
caseload and nature of suit handled by a particular judge — although state court analyses are being added, such reports have initially
been limited to analyzing the work of federal judges and can be costly (typically not available to law school Lexis/Westlaw accounts). It
can be challenging to obtain judicial profiles for judges acting as arbitrators or mediators — and these may have to be requested from the
arbitration or mediation service being used by the parties. Some libraries save (rather than discard) the Judicial Profiles (Daily Journal
Corp) of retired judges as they may later serve as arbitrators or mediators in retirement. Some biographical information can be pieced
together from legal news articles, try LegalTrac http://www.law.ucdavis.edu/library/databases/index.html#L or legal news databases on
Lexis and Westlaw.

Form Books
Legal forms are found not only in form books and at official court web sites, but are also in treatises, often in an Appendix, at the end of a
chapter or in a separate compact disk (―CD‖). Most of the Rutter Group and CEB treatises outlined above include sample forms. Inquire
at the Reference Desk about any forms CD’s available for specific titles. Some forms are specified in the California Codes, try browsing
the LARMAC Index under ―FORMS‖ (RESERVE KFC 40 L37). Below are some suggested sources for locating forms:
