GMO Basics for Beginners

The document is a presentation on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) given by a group of students. It defines GMOs as organisms whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering, and notes they are used to produce medicines, foods, and in scientific research. The presentation outlines the 4 basic steps to creating a GMO: identifying a desired trait, copying the genetic information, inserting it into another organism's DNA, and growing the new organism. It discusses advantages like increased crop yields but also disadvantages like threats to ecosystems. Examples of GMOs presented include golden rice, Flavr Savr tomatoes, and Bt maize.

Slide 1

WHAT IS GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISM OR GMO?

SLIDE 2

Genetically modified Organism (GMO’s) – or Genetically engineered Organism (GNO) are any organism,
whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques.

SLIDE 3

They are used to produce medicines,

SLIDE 4

Genetically modified foods,

SLIDE 5

and in scientific research

SLIDE 6: HOW ARE GMO’s MADE?

Genetically modified organism or GMO’s takes only 4 steps to create a complete result but it takes a
several years to bring the entire process of bringing a GMO product to the market place.

SLIDE 7

1. IDENTIFYING THE GENETIC INFORMATION THAT GIVES AN ORGANISM (PLANT, ANIMAL OR

MICROOGANISM) A DESIRED TRAIT

2. COPYING THAT INFORMATION THAT HAS DESIRED TRAIT

3. INSERTING THAT INFORMATION INTO THE DNA OF ANOTHER ORGANISM

4. THEN GROWING THE NEW ORGANISM

SLIDE 8

Advantage and disadvantages of GMO;

Advantages:

1. Increased crop yields

2. Offer more useful knowledge for genetics

3. Allow for more profits

4. Known to decrease the prices of food

5. Yield products that are found to be safe

SLIDE 9

Disadvantages:

1. Pose a threat to the insects that are important to the ecosystem

2. Produce more weeds and can threaten the lives of an animal

3. Threaten crops diversity

4. Believed that it can change the field of Agriculture in a negative way

SLIDE 10: Examples of GMO’s are:

1. Golden rice- the rice variety (Oryza sativa) was modified with Daffodil genes which synthesize more
beta – carotene which are body converts to vitamin A

2. Flavr savr tomatoes- the first commercially known grown genetically modified food to be granted a
license for human consumption. it is modified by adding an antisense gene to slowdown ripening
process, thus preventing it from softening .

3. Bt maize- Maize plant was modified with genes of a bacterium BACILLUS THURINGIENSES to synthesize
delta protein which is responsible for resistance against insects.
SLIDE 11: THANK YOU!!
