DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

TECHNOLOGY

The Department Vision is “To produce competent and highly skilled

professionals capable of utilizing their intellect and knowledge to address

current challenges in the construction industry.”

The Four-Years B.Sc. Civil Engineering Technology (CET) degree program offered at the

National Skills University Islamabad (NSU) is unique. In addition to theoretical engineering

concepts, equal emphasis is placed on developing job-ready skills. The construction

industry is the country’s second-largest sector after agriculture, responsible for providing

a direct boost to the nation's GDP. Despite the numerous construction and infrastructure

projects that require a significant workforce, graduate employability in the country

is declining significantly. The primary reason is that curricula are not designed with

workplace skills in mind.

The department offers a skill-based degree program to meet the demands of the current

era. This program provides students with the opportunity to learn and understand basic

and advanced scientific engineering concepts and develop the necessary technical skills for

the construction industry. Major attention is given to train the students to solve problems

in the construction industry, such as managing the construction process, executing

engineers' designs, estimating, scheduling, and coordinating projects. Additionally,

students receive training in planning, project management, and consultancy related to

construction projects.

DEPARTMENT OF CET
B.Sc. Civil Engineering Technology (4 Years)

The bachelor's degree (B.Sc.) in Civil Engineering Technology comprises 137 credit hours

spread across 8 semesters. The first three years emphasize key subjects like civil engi-

neering drawing, surveying, construction management, concrete technology, materials &

methods of construction, theory of structures, soil mechanics, computer-aided building,

modeling & design, technical communications, and quantity surveying & contract docu-

ments to establish a strong foundation. In the final year, students undergo comprehen-

sive supervised field training, a mandatory component of the curriculum aimed at providing
hands-on experience before embarking on their professional careers. This practical expo-

sure is a pivotal focus of both the institution and the CET department, aiming to develop

job-ready competencies and skills, ultimately enhancing our students' employability. The

curriculum for the Bachelor of Civil Engineering Technology adheres to the guidelines set

by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the National Technology Council (NTC).

The ubiquitous use of computing technologies in industries, academics, organizations,

and individuals has made everyone rely on the information systems for their daily

operations, planning, and decisions making. However, the industry and individuals

are facing a shortage of skilled Information Technology (IT) professionals. In order to

overcome this gap, the Information Engineering Technology department at National

Skills University, Islamabad offers a 4-years bachelor’s degree program in Information

Science at NSU is to be a leading hub of innovation, fostering excellence in

education, research, and practical application, while producing graduates

who drive technological advancement and positively impact society.”

Computer science is the study of the theory, experimentation, and engineering that

form the basis for the design and use of computers. It is the scientific and practical

approach to computation and its applications and the systematic study of the

feasibility, structure, expression, and mechanization of the methodical procedures

(or algorithms) that underlie the acquisition, representation, processing, storage,

communication of, and access to information [ref WordNet Princeton definition].

Computer Science is the application of a systematic, disciplined, and quantifiable

approach to the design, development, operation, and maintenance of software

systems. It is in fact the practice of designing and implementing large, reliable,

efficient, and economical software by applying the principles and practices of

engineering. The program aims to train students in all aspects of software life

cycle from specification through analysis and design to testing, maintenance and

evaluation of software product.

The Department Vision is “to prepare students with the soft skills and

scientific curiosity essential for the 21st-century job market.”

With a changing job market, there has also been a shift in the required job skills. The dawn

of the 21st century has seen the demand for a new job skillset in the workforce that was

previously limited to being adept in literacy and numeracy skills with a focus on content and

knowledge only. The general studies courses are designed to provide students with the basic

knowledge necessary to engage in a higher level of critical thinking, discipline, basic scientific

principles, ethics and morality, communication skills, analysis of information, cultural diversity,

and patriotism. The world is complex and interconnected, and to understand the bigger reality,

one needs to get help from disciplines like physics, chemistry, literature, history, and ethics.

These courses cultivate students’ progressive ideas, tolerance, and social responsibility.

In the age of technology, these courses help to act and decide rationally and logically

according to the situation. They also emphasize experimental and activity-based learning.

The mission of the General Studies department is to enable the students to think creatively

and critically, to co-exist and operate ethically in a culturally diverse environment, and to keep

their curiosity for objective truths alive so that they become informed and active citizenry.

SKILLS TRAINING - SHORT COURSES

This department also offers two short courses including:

1. Workplace Safety and Health Certificate

2. Healthcare Receptionists Certficate

Health, safety, and hygiene professionals are in high demand after the COVID-19 pan-

demic. The six-month Workplace Safety and Healthcare Certificate is designed to pro-

vide the necessary skills for identifying occupational hazards, assessing risks, and con-

trolling workplace dangers. Participants will work on various Occupational Safety and

Health (OSH) projects and acquire diverse skills under the guidance of competent train-

ers and industry professionals. Healthcare Receptionists are typically the first point of

contact for patients in healthcare settings such as hospitals and laboratories. The de-

mand for skilled multitasking receptionists has significantly increased, especially in the

post-Covid era. This three-month certificate program aims to equip participants with

basic skills and training in interacting and communicating with patients or visitors. Par-

ticipants will learn how to manage concerns, address queries, and provide medical as-

sistance effectively.
