Readings in Philippine History

2ND MIDTERM ASSESSMENT

Marco Angelo Quanico

INDIVIDUAL OUTPUT
Upload in the Class Google Drive. Deadline November 12, 2022 (Saturday)

I. Comprehensively discuss the historical significance of the following:

(5 points each)

1. Tindalo Tree at the Bacolod Public Plaza

The 67-year-old Tindalo tree in the public plaza of Bacolod stands as a silent
witness to the history of this city despite frequently going unnoticed. Afzelia
romboidea's common name, Tindalo, is known for its priceless wood. Its
population has decreased so much due to extensive logging that it is now regarded
as one of the nation's natural rare species.
2. FR. MAURICIO FERRERO, OAR
He was appointed Vicar Provincial of the island's west coast and Vicar Forane of
Negros. He was sent to Marcilla, Navarra, Spain, in 1894. He was reassigned as
the parish priest of Bacolod in 1897, then in 1898 he was named the entire island's
vicar provincial. However, the Negros Revolution caused his assignment to end
quickly. He was appointed parish priest of Bacolod for a third time on February
28, 1902. In 1909, he sought retirement due to his advanced age. In the age of 71,
he passed away at San Nicols Convent in Intramuros on December 8, 1915.

3. Old Bacolod City Hall, Araneta-Luzuriaga Streets

There are still several city agencies based here, and the mayor's extension office is
now being renovated. The first City Hall, the ancestral residence of the
Luzuriagas, was situated here as well. That wooden structure was destroyed in
1965 when this one was finished. Before demolishing the dilapidated structure that
took up half of the road, Mayor Romeo Guanzon ordered photographs to be taken
and a scale model to be constructed.

4.
Provincial Capitol of Occidental Negros
The Gonzaga family owned the land that was chosen as the best location for the capitol.
The primary mode of transportation in the province's towns and cities was the calesa,
which was pulled by horses. A portion of the area was a swamp, and the grass there was
used to feed the horses.

5.
Monument of PFC Theodore C. Vinther
Bacolod Public Plaza
To honor someone who has made a positive contribution to the local or national
community. A monument can be built to commemorate a noteworthy event for a
community or nation. We erected monuments to honor the hero or the occasion and to
motivate future generations to follow in the hero's footsteps. The occasions that inspire
individuals to be heroes are the ones that typically have monuments. Although not a
characteristic of the Filipinos, we embraced the western method of remembering.

II. Explain the historical significance of the following (5 points each).

You can attach picture or any MOVs

1. KM 0 in front of the Capitol Lagoon

The Capitol Park and Lagoon's flagpole serves as the official Km 0 or K 00 reference
point, but in order to increase its visibility, the government constructed a signpost
immediately beyond the Park's boundaries. When determining the distance from the
province to the various towns and cities of Negros Occidental, the Kilometer 0 acts as a
reference point for distance.

2. Bacolod San Sebastian Cathedral

Since that time till now, the feast of St. Sebastian has been observed on January 19
to commemorate both his martyrdom and the founding of this cathedral.

3. Burgos Street
Due to the numerous opulent houses built by some of the wealthy families of
Bacolod during the 1930s, a little section of Burgos Street was dubbed
Millionaires Row. These homes still survive today, proudly attesting to the
wealthy lifestyles of these families.
4. Araneta Street
Juan Araneta and Niceto Lacson are well-known figures in the lengthy history of
the province. The island was freed thanks to the efforts of both generals, who
forced the Spanish to concede defeat by using only knives, bolos, and cannons and
firearm replicas on carts.
