Formwork in Construction: Principles & Applications

The document discusses formwork, which is the mold used to cast concrete structures into required shapes and sizes. Formwork must be carefully planned and constructed to withstand loads and produce properly sized and shaped concrete. It should be reusable to save time and money. Various types of formwork are used for walls, beams, foundations, slabs, and columns. Formwork is constructed by qualified formworkers and positioned properly according to design plans.

Formwork

Emily Rodriguez.2016.9, “By definition, formwork is "The Mold," or the container into which

the casting material, often concrete, is poured to produce the required structural shape.

Formwork is used in the construction industry to cast concrete members in a variety of

shapes and sizes using a variety of materials, including wood, steel, aluminum, plastic, etc”.

Form-work has a synonym called shuttering. When casting takes place, the formwork must

be strong enough to support both dead and live loads until the concrete hardens and

reaches some of the design strength.

Principles

-In order for the finished cast concrete to have the proper size, shape, location, and finish,

formwork must be carefully planned and constructed.

-Formwork needs to be developed with a strong enough frame to handle all dead and live

loads without risking blowouts, collapse, worker hazard, or structural damage.

-In an effort to save the general contractor and the owner time and money, formwork must

be developed, constructed, and reused.

-It is practical to have a water-resistant character so that it does not absorb water from

concrete.

-The amount of deflection and shrinking should be kept to a minimum.

-The joins should be tight enough to minimize the leakage of cement grout.

-The material of the formwork should be affordable, conveniently available and should be

acceptable for reuse.

Application

The formwork should be positioned properly to the intended line and levels should have

plane surface.

The formwork should be built in segments. So that the concrete is not damaged while the

formwork is being removed.

Formwork are constructed by a qualified formworker. “A formworker is someone who

creates and shapes concrete molds into the right shape and size for whatever needs to be

built on a building site”. (Kathleen Kuiper 2009,11,) The role involves working closely with a

team of people to pour concrete into moulds, measure, cut and shape wood and metal for

use in construction.

Formwork can be applied in different part in a building like this 4

1. Wall formwork

2. Beam formwork

3. Foundation/slabs formwork

4. Column formwork

1. Wall formwork

Wall formwork used for concreting of shear or RCC wall in dams, wing walls, basement rcc

walls etc. Wall shuttering made up of vertically arranged upright timbers (bearers) to which

plywood sheeting boards are nailed at the inner side. Boards on both sides are used to

diagonally brace the upright timbers.

2. Beam formwork

Beam is the most significant part of RCC framed construction. Panels for the bottom and

sides of the beam formwork are made of prefabricated sheeting. The individual parts of

form-work are manufactured based on the beam size. For prefabrication of the sheeting

parts, a table for fabrication must be manufactured on site.

3. Foundation/slabs formwork

Foundation formworks constructed according to foundation type. Depending on the type of

foundation, such as footing, combined footing, or raft, the shuttering design will vary.

Fundamentally, the designs for individual foundations and shuttering for strip foundations

differ. The size, particularly the size of the foundation, determines the shuttering's design.

4. Column formwork

The formwork arrangement for a column can vary depending on the column outline, which

can be rectangular, circular, hexagonal, or any other shape. The sheeting of column

shuttering is constructed according to the column dimensions. The panels are placed in a

foot rim, anchored in soil with the help of bolts.
