Nurs 3020 - Silo Part 1

The nurse outlined a learning plan with two goals. The first goal was to improve knowledge of medications by creating two drug cards per week and teaching the information to her boyfriend. The second goal was to take on caring for two patients during clinical shifts to improve time management skills. For both goals, she identified specific learning activities and timelines to track her progress, including creating drug cards, discussing her goals with her clinical lead, and developing a patient care schedule. Her goals aligned with principles of treating patients with dignity, promoting well-being, providing competent care, and maintaining public confidence in nursing.

Learning goal 1

Describe an area in your practice you want to further develop.

I would like to improve on my knowledge and understanding of medications, including their mechanism
of action, indications, dosages, pharmacokinetics, adverse effects, contraindications, and the patient
education associated with them. Currently, my knowledge of medications is limited, and I encounter
challenges in retaining information about them.

Define your learning goal. What is it that you want/need to learn? Include a timeline for when you want to achieve this goal.
Watch: Are your learning goals SMART? to enhance your learning goals.

Every week until the end of the semester, I will create two drug cards on different medications to
improve my knowledge on them. Further, to retain the information, after creating the drug cards, I will
educate my boyfriend on the drugs, and ask him to ask me questions on them. I will know if I've met
my goal if by my last day of clinical (November 24th, 2023) I understand all my patient's medications
without having to research them.

Describe the learning activities you plan to complete to achieve your goal. Include a timeline to stay on track.

Going forward I will complete two drug cards per week, the drugs and dates are:
Atorvastatin & Bethanechol drug cards completed by October 4 & taught to boyfriend on October 5
Atropine & Ipratropium drug cards completed by October 11 & taught to boyfriend on October 12
Duloxetine & Propranolol drug cards completed by October 18 & taught to boyfreind on October 19

Learning goal 2

Describe an area in your practice you want to further develop.

Currently I am caring for one patient during my clinical shifts and I have free time that could be utilized better.

Define your learning goal. What is it that you want/need to learn? Include a timeline for when you want to achieve this goal.
Watch: Are your learning goals SMART? to enhance your learning goals.

From October 19 to November 24, I aim to take on the role of the primary caregiver for two patients during each of my clinical
shifts. To achieve this, I plan to have a discussion with my clinical lead during my shifts on October 5th and 6th, where I will
communicate my goal and seek her input regarding my nursing care proficiency in managing two patients. I will also request her
to assign me two patients for my shifts following our discussion. Additionally, on October 5th and 6th, I intend to create a
personalized schedule based on my patients' care requirements. This schedule will help me allocate and track my nursing duties
effectively, and I will record the time duration for each task. This method will assist me in developing improved time management
skills necessary for caring for multiple patients simultaneously. I will consider my goal successful if my clinical lead assigns me
two patients starting from October 19th onward. Furthermore, on October 20th, I will assess the success of providing care to
both patients by evaluating whether I completed all nursing duties within the designated timeframes.

Describe the learning activities you plan to complete to achieve your goal. Include a timeline to stay on track.

-Participate in nursing handoffs on October 19th & 20th, November 9th & 10th, and November 23rd & 24th.
-Familiarize myself with the EPIC system on October 5th & 6th to locate essential patient care information.
-Extend assistance to my peers by offering and requesting help with their patient assignments during my available time on
October 5th & 6th.
-Develop a detailed hourly schedule for managing my patient assignments on October 6th.

Reflect on your plan
Use this section to reflect on your Learning Plan and evaluate changes to your practice. See the instruction sheet for what to
consider. If you don’t accomplish your goals this year, you can always carry them forward into your next Learning Plan.

I am fully committed to my professional growth, which includes active participation in nursing handoffs,
familiarizing myself with the EPIC system, and always being ready to assist my peers. This holistic
approach demonstrates my unwavering dedication to optimizing the clinical experience and enhancing
patient care. Additionally, I am equally committed to expanding my knowledge and understanding of
medications, encompassing various aspects such as mechanisms of action, indications, dosages, and
more. Acknowledging my current limitations in this area, I am determined to improve my nursing practice
and provide more comprehensive patient care.
