Hello class. My name is Linh. I'm very happy to meet you today.
Before going to our lesson, let's
watch a short video about some natural disasters. Please watch carefully, because after watching, I'll
have a few questions for you. So, let's start.
I'll divide the class into 2 groups. Four of you are in group A. And the rest is group B. Come here and
line up in two rows, facing each other. Here are eight questions about the video we just watched. I'll
randomly choose a number and count one, two, three. Then, the team that raises their flag first will
have the right to answer, and if the answer is correct, you will receive a gift. Who are the winners?
Yes, all of you.
Let's look at the words in our game again. Listen and repeat after me. So what kinds of disasters often
occur in Vietnam? Oh, that's right, in the central region of our country, there’re floods every year.
So, class, do you know what a storm is called if it has very strong winds and heavy rain? It's a severe
storm. And a storm that is not usually predicted is called a "freak storm".
Are these disasters natural or caused by humans? That's right. They're natural disasters. So what are
disasters caused by man? To know more, let's look at this picture.
What can you see? Some trains crashed into each other. And this is called a rail accident.
How about this one? What can you see? Two cars collided with each other. This accident is the
    road accident.
What's this? The two planes crashed into each other and caught fire. This is called plane crash.
What can you see? We can see smoke and fire. Maybe a factory exploded. And this accident is
    called factory explosion.
Who are they? They are soldiers. And do you know what kind of disaster it is? It is war.
The accidents or disasters that humans cause to the environment, as we just discussed, are all
called environmental disasters. Environmental disaster is a disaster to the natural environment due
to human activity. For example, wildfire, oil spill,…
Let's look back at these new words again. Listen and repeat after me.
Phát HANDOUT
1b. Open your book to page 14. Look at the screen. I’ll have some headlines about the accidents or
disasters we just learned. How many headlines are there? (8) Read these headlines and underline the
keywords. For example, in headline A, what are the keywords? That's right, "train" and "collision."
What does it mean by "collision"? It means "crash".
You have 2 minutes to underline key words. Go. What are the keywords in headline B?
"tremor" is a small earthquake. "blast" means "an explosion". "chemical plant" means "a factory where
chemicals are produced". "collapse" means "to fall down".
Now, match these headlines with accidents or disasters 1 to 12. Ok, you have 2 minutes to do this task.
Which accident or disaster best matches headline A?
2a. Let's move on to the next activity. How many pictures are there on the screen, class? What can you
see in picture 1? There are some soldiers. Some of them are holding binoculars. There is a black and
red train. It has come off the tracks. There are 2 men wearing yellow jackets by the side of the tracks.
There are some people walking along a flooded street and pulling small suitcases. There is a rescue
worker and a dog in a collapsed building.
Now, you will listen to some people describe the disasters in pictures 1 to 4. Then match the
descriptions A to D with these pictures. Which picture matches description A?
2b. (Vòng quay may mắn) Based on the descriptions you just heard and some suggested words on the
screen, choose a picture and describe it to your partner in as much detail as possible. So, what will you
do?
Speaking
Imagine you just heard bad news, and you really wanna share it with your friend. So, how can you say
to give that news, and how will your friend react? Here are some ways you can give bad news and
react. Who can read the column "Giving bad news" for me? Now, I want you to use the headlines in
Ex. 1b and the language in the box to make exchanges. For example,.... You will have 3 minutes to
practice giving and reacting to bad news.
Listening
Let's turn to the next activity. Now you will hear a radio news report about a train crash and a flood.
And then check if these statements are true or false. How many sentences are there? Read these
sentences and underline key words. If the sentence is true, do like this: make your arm like a tick. And
if it's false, make your arms like a cross. Will you do this when the sentence is true or false?
Was anyone injured? How many people? Over 40 people have been injured.
The reason for the light’s failure isn’t known yet, so the government needs an official enquiry to know
why the light system failed.
It was the worst flood the town had ever seen.
A burst pipe is a break in a pipe.
Speaking (Đua vịt)
After hearing a radio news report, let's imagine you are a newscaster for the local TV station and report
about a disaster. Based on the audio we just listened to, I have a sample report for you.
Now you will work in groups of 3 and take turns reporting about a certain disaster. Feel free to make
up any disasters, or you can rely on these 3 suggestions to prepare your short news report.
And remember, your news report must have information about place, date, event and what happened.
You have 6 minutes to prepare. Go
Workbook
1. Next, open your workbooks to page 50 and do exercise number 10. To do this exercise well, let's
review the following tenses together. Do you still remember the difference between the present simple

use Present Continuous to talk about future arrangements. / Actions which happened at a stated time
in the past versus Actions in progress at a stated time in the past

We've just reviewed some of the differences between tenses. Now let's do number 10 together.
I have this little teddy bear. Now I'll turn on the music, and you will pass this teddy bear to your
friends. When the music stops for anyone, this person will go to the board and write the answers. Got
it? Are you ready? Let's play.
2. Next, exercise number 2: Put the verbs in parentheses in the past perfect or the past perfect
progressive. What is the difference between these two tenses?
3. Next, exercise number 3: Use the past perfect or the past perfect progressive to complete the
sentences. How many sentences are there, class? I have one example of sentence number 1: James was
exhausted because he had been running all morning. Work in pairs for 3 minutes to complete these
sentences.
Let's see who will be the lucky person.
Your homework is to do all the remaining exercises on pages 50 and 51 in the workbook. That's enough
for today. Have a good day!
