Edvard Munch painted this when he was 30 years
old. He had had a very difficult life from
childhood. He wrote about his father, "My father
was temperamentally nervous and religiously
obsessive - to the point of psychoneurosis.
Edvard Munch used tempera on cardboard. Tempera is a
painting technique that involves mixing pigments with a
water-soluble binder, typically egg yolk, to create a paint
medium. This medium allows for fine detail and precision in
painting.
