answer to each of the questions from 29 to 36.
“Family” includes your siblings and parents, as well as relatives who you may not interact with every day, such as
your cousins, aunts, aucles, grandparents, and stepparents. These are probably the people you are closest to and with
whom you spend the most time. Having healthy relationships with your family members is both important and difficult.
Families in the 21st century come in all shapes and sizes: traditional, single parent, blended (more than one family
together in the same house), and gay and lesbian parents - just to mane a few. No matter the “type” of family you have,
there are going to be highs and lows - good times and bad. Many times, however, families become blocked in their
relationships by hurt, anger, mistrust, and confusion. These emotions are natural and normal, and few families do not
have at least a few experiences with them. The worst time for most families, is during a divorce.
By making a few simple changes in the way we look at the world and deal with other people, it is possible to creat
happier, more stable relationships. Families need to be units of mutual caring and support; they can be sources of
lifelong strength for all individuals. Thus, it is never too late to begin the process of improving family relationships - even
if they are already of good quality - by developing some simple skills.
Whereas in other situations you can step back and assess the relationship, it is oftenhard to do this with your family.
Your family may be a constant presence in your life, so when an argument or issue arises, it may seem impossible to
handle. However, remember that communication is key to resolving conflict. While it may seem that your siblings are
constantly present to annoy you or boss you around , they are also there there to communicate. Thus, use your family’s
presence to your advantage - communicate with each other, develop ways to value boundaries, and build trust and
respect.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions
Bello Nock recently raced up a thin wire on a motorcycle. He drove the motorcycle high over thousands of
spectators' heads. He's a clown with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus. To the spectators below, Bello's stunt
looked dangerous - and it was. But Bello knew a secret. He was using science to help keep himself safe.
Bello began performing circus stunts when he was nine years old. He walked on a thin wire that was stretched
nine feet off the ground. To stay on a wire without falling, Bello needs to keep his center of gravity low. An object's
center of gravity is usually located in the middle of the object. That is where the object's weight is centered. By crouching
and keeping low, Bello keeps his center of gravity low. The lower his center of gravity, the harder it is for Bello to fall.
Bello often carries a heavy metal stick when he performs. The stick bends downward, lowering his center of gravity.
Bello also uses Newton's first law of motion when he performs. That law is named for Isaac Newton. He was a
scientist who lived about 275 years ago. Newton's first law of motion says that a moving object will keep moving unless
an outside force acts on it. (The law also says that an object at rest will stay that way unless an outside force acts on it.)
Bello uses that law when he rides his miniature, or tiny, bike.
As Bello speeds along on his tiny bike, he sometimes has to stop before slamming into a wall. To stop, Bello uses
the bike's brakes. The brakes create friction between the bike's tires and the ground. The friction is an outside force that
slows the bike. Friction also changes the bike's motion into heat energy. You could say that Bello's act is really hot! To see
how friction works, rub your hands together as fast as you can. When you rub your hands together, they should start to
feel warm. Friction between your hands changes into heat energy. Bello always puts on a high-energy show. "I always
want to capture the attention of children," he said. He captures their attention with science.
Question 43: According to the passage, what does friction do with the motion of the bike?
A. Friction changes the motion into heat energy. B. Friction helps keep the bike’s center of gravity low.
C. Friction means that Bello can rub his hands together while he rides.
D. Friction makes Bello less likely to fall off the bike.

Fertilizer is any substance that can be added to the soil to provide chemical elements essential for plant nutrition
so that the yield can be increased. Natural substances such as animal droppings, ashes from wood fires, and straw have
been used as fertilizers in fields for thousands of years, and lime has been used since Romans introduced it during the
Empire. It was not until the nineteenth century, however, that chemical fertilizer became widely accepted as normal
agricultural practice. Today, both natural and synthetic fertilizers are available in a variety of forms.
A complete fertilizer is usually marked with a formula consisting of three numbers, such as 4-8-2 or 6-6-4, which
designate the percentage of content of nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and potash in the order stated. Synthetic fertilizers,
produced by factories, are available in either solid or liquid form. Solids, in the shape of chemical granules, are in demand
because they are not only easy to store but also easy to apply. Recently, liquids have shown as increase in popularity,
accounting for 20 percent of the nitrogen fertilizer used throughout the world. Formerly, powders were also used, but
they were found to be less convenient than either solids or liquids.
Fertilizers have no harmful effects on the soil, the crop, or the customer as long as they are used according to
recommendations based on the result of local research. Occasionally, however, farmers may use more fertilizer than
necessary, in which case the plants do not need, and therefore do not absorb, the total amount of fertilizer applied to the
soil. The surplus of fertilizer thus can damage not only the crop but also the animals or human beings that eat the crop.
Furthermore, fertilizer that is not used in the production of a healthy plant is leached into the water table. Accumulations
of chemical fertilizer in the water supply accelerate the growth of algae and, consequently, may disturb the natural cycle
of life, contributing to the death of fish. Too much fertilizer on grass can cause digestive disorders in cattle and in infants
who drink cow’s milk. Fertilizer must be used with great attention to responsible use or it can harm the environment.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions
Although speech is generally accepted as the most advanced form of communication, there are many ways of
communicating without using words. In every known culture, signals, signs, symbols, and gestures are commonly utilized
as instruments of communication. There is a great deal of agreement among communication scientists as to what each of
these methods is and how each differs from the others. For instance, the basic function of any signal is to impinge upon
the environment in such a way that it attracts attention, as, for example, the dots and dashes that can be applied in a
telegraph circuit. Coded to refer to speech, the potential for communication through these dots and dashes -short and
long intervals as the circuit is broken - is very great. Less adaptable to the codification of words, signs also contain agreed
upon meaning; that is, they convey information in and of themselves. Two examples are the hexagonal red sign that
conveys the meaning of stop, and the red and white swirled pole outside a shop that communicates the meaning of
barber.
Symbols are more difficult to describe than either signals or signs because of their intricate relationship with the
receiver’s culture perceptions. In some cultures, applauding in a theater provides performers with an auditory symbol of
approval. In other cultures, if done in unison, applauding can be a symbol of the audience’s discontent with the
performance. Gestures such as weaving and handshaking also communicate certain culture messages. Although signals,
signs, symbols, and gestures are very useful, they also have a major disadvantage in communication. They usually do not
allow ideas to be shared without the sender being directly adjacent to the receiver. Without an exchange of ideas,
interaction comes to a halt. As a result, means of communication intended to be used across long distances and extended
periods must be based upon speech. To radio, television, and the telephone, one must add fax, paging systems,
electronic mail, and the internet, and no one doubts but that there are more means of communication on the horizon.

Until recently, humankind seemed to view the ocean as a source of infinite resources. Its vast size and depth and
unexplored frontiers made the ocean appear invulnerable to overexploitation. The truth is that the populations of
many species are decreasing at an unsustainable rate, and the number of species listed as endangered from marine
life families such as whales, dolphins, manatee and dugongs, salmon, seabirds, sea turtles and sharks to name a few,
are on the rise. The threats to marine species are difficult to perceive because marine animals are not as visible as
animals on land. But unfortunately, marine creatures are equally, if not more, vulnerable to problems such as
habitat destruction and overexploitation. Shallow water animals that breathe air, like turtles, manatees, dugongs, and
whales are often hit by boats and caught in fishing gear.
Species such as turtles that lay their eggs on land often lose their nurseries due to coastal development. Animals that
have taken millions of years to evolve, that are invaluable to all ecosystems, have and continue to vanish from places
where they once flourished

Most people think of computers as very modern inventions, products of our new technological age.
But actually the idea for a computer had been worked out over two centuries ago by a man(31)
Charles Babbage. Babbage was bom in 1791 and grew up to be a brilliant mathematician. He drew up
plans for several calculating machines which he called "engines". But despite the fact that he (32)

machines would ever work. Recently, however, the Science Museum in London has finished building(34) engine
based on one of Babbage'designs. (35) has taken six years to complete and more than four
thousand parts have been specially made.

Smart cards and mobile phones are becoming an increasingly popular way to make all sorts of payments.
Even now, in Japan thousands of transactions, from paying rail tickets to picking up the groceries, take place
every day with customers passing their handsets across a small flat-screen device. And predictions in the
world of finance reckon that payments using mobile phones will have risen to more than $50 billion in the very
near future.
What's the appeal of e-cash? Compared to cheques or credit cards, it offers the speed of cash, but more so.
It takes just one tenth of a second to complete most transactions and as no change is required, errors in
counting are eliminated. Fraud and theft are also reduced and for the retailer, it reduces the cost of handling
money. Sony's vision of having a chip embedded in computers, TVs and games consoles means that films,
music and games can be paid for easily without having to input credit card details.
And what about the future of the banks? Within their grip on the market, banks and credit- card firms
want to be in a position to collect most of the fees from the users of mobile and contactless-payment
systems. But the new system could prove to be a "disruptive technology" as far as the banks are concerned.
If payments for a few coffees, a train ticket and a newspaper are made every day by a commuter with a
mobile, this will not appear on their monthly credit card statements but on their mobile phone statements.
And having spent fortunes on branding, credit-card companies and banks do not want to see other payment
systems gaining popularity. It's too early to say whether banks will miss out and if so, by how much.
However, quite a few American bankers are optimistic.
They feel there is reason to be suspicious of those who predict that high-street banks may be a thing of the
past. They point out that Internet banking did not result in the closure of their high-street branches as was
predicted. On the contrary, more Americans than ever are using local branches. So, whether we'll become a
totally cash-free society remains open to contention.

The Singapore Science Centre is located on a six-hectare site in Jurong. At the centre, we can
discover the wonders of science and technology in a fun way. Clap your hands and colorful bulbs will
light up. Start a wheel spinning and it will set off a fan churning. It is a place to answer our curiosity and
capture our imagination.
The centre features over four hundred exhibits covering topics like solar radiation, communication,
electronics, mathematics, nuclear energy and evolution. It aims to arouse interest in science and
technology among us and the general public. The centre is the first science one to be established in South East
Asia. It was opened in 1977 and it now receives an average of one thousand, two hundred visitors a day. The
exhibits can be found in four exhibition galleries. They are the Lobby, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and
Aviation. These exhibits are renewed annually so as to encourage visitors to make return visits to the centre.
Instead of the usual “Hands off” notices found in exhibition halls, visitors are invited to touch and feel the
exhibits, push the buttons, turn the cranks or pedals. This is an interesting way to learn science even

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C ,or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer for each of the questions.
Aging is the process of growing old. It occurs eventually in every living thing provided, of course, that an illness or
accident does not kill it prematurely. The most familiar outward signs of aging may be seen in old people, such as the
graying of the hair and the wrinkling of the skin. Signs of aging in a pet dog or cat include loss of playfulness and
energy, a decline in hearing and eyesight, or even a slight graying of the coat. Plants age too, but the signs are much
harder to detect.
Most body plants grow bigger and stronger, and function more efficiently during childhood. They reach their peak at
the time of maturity, or early adulthood. After that they begin to decline. Bones, for example, gradually become lighter
and more brittle. In the aged, the joints between the bones also become rigid and more inflexible. This can make
moving very painful.
All the major organs of the body show signs aging. The brain, for example, works less efficiently, and even gets smaller
in size. Thinking processes of all sorts are slowed down. Old people often have trouble in remembering recent
events.
One of the most serious changes of old age occurs in the arteries , the blood vessels that lead from the heart.
They become thickened and constricted, allowing less blood to flow to the rest of body. This condition
accounts, directly or indirectly, for many of the diseases of the aged. It may, for example, result in heart attack.
Aging is not a uniform process. Different parts of the body wear out at different rates. There are great
differences among people in their rate of aging. Even the cells of the body differ in the way they age. The majority of
cells are capable of reproducing themselves many times during the course of a lifetime. Nerve cells and muscle fibers
can never be replaced once they wear out.
Gerontologists - scientists who study the process of aging - believe the wearing out of the body is controlled by a
built - in biological time - clock. They are trying to discover how this clock works so that they can slow down the
process. This could give man a longer life and a great number of productive years.
Question 24. What is the main idea in the first paragraph?
A. Signs of aging are easier to detect in animals than in plants.

improving."

=> đáp án C

Most people start smoking when they are in their teens and are addicted by the time they reach adulthood. Some
have tried to quit but have returned to cigarettes because smoking is such a strong addiction. It is a habit that is very
difficult to break. There are many different reasons why people smoke.
Three of the main reasons that young people smoke are to look mature, to be like their friends, and to experiment.
Since teens see older people all around them smoking, especially their parents and relatives, they smoke to act older. If
their friends or peers smoke, they may feel pressured into doing the same to be accepted. The last reason is the
excitement of experimenting with something that is forbidden. In Massachusetts it is against the law for anyone under 18
years old to smoke. Usually parents do not allow their under age teens to smoke. Therefore, smoking becomes very
attractive. It is exciting to get cigarettes and sneak away to smoke without being caught.
Adults smoke for other reasons. They may have a lot of stress and pressures because of economic and personal
problems. They may be unemployed or working but not making enough money to take care of themselves and their
families. They may be homeless, or they may be dealing with alcohol or cocaine/heroin addictions. Some may be in bad
marriages or relationships in which there is physical and/or verbal abuse. All these people may smoke to feel relaxed or
to give them energy while going through a hard time.
Whether young or old, some people smoke to control their weight. Smokers, on the average, weigh seven pounds
less than non-smokers. Smoking reduces a person's appetite. It lessens his/her sense of taste and smell. This could be
why ex-smokers gain weight after quitting cigarettes. Food tastes and smells so much better.
Finally, there are people who say they love to smoke. Smoking gives them pleasure. It just makes them feel good.

The goal of Internet-based encyclopedia Wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org) is to give everyone on the planet access
to information. Like other encyclopedias, Wikipedia contains lots of information: more than 2.5 million articles in 200
different languages covering just about every subject. Unlike other encyclopedias, however, Wikepedia is not written by
experts, but by ordinary people. These writers are not paid and their names are not published. They contribute to
Wikipedia simply because they want to share their knowledge.
Encyclopedias began in ancient times as collections of writings about all aspects of human knowledge. The word
itself comes from ancient Greek, and means “a complete general education”. Real popularity for encyclopedias came in
the nineteenth century in Europe and the United States, with the publication of encyclopedias written for ordinary
readers. With the invention of the CD-ROM, the same amount of information could be put on a few computer discs. Then
with the Internet, it became possible to create an online encyclopedia that could be constantly updated, like Microsoft’s
Encarta. However, even Internet-based encyclopedias like Encarta were written by paid experts. At first, Wikipedia, the
brainchild of Jimmy Wales, a businessman in Chicago, was not so different from these. In 2001, he had the idea for an
Internet-based encyclopedia that would provide information quickly and easily to everyone. Furthermore, that
information would be available free, unlike other Internet encyclopedias at that time.
But Wales, like everyone else, believed that people with special knowledge were needed to write the articles, and
so he began by hiring experts. He soon changed his approach, however, as it took them a long time to finish their work.
He decided to open up the encyclopedia in a radical new way, so that everyone would have access not only to the
information, but also to the process of putting this information online. To do this, he used what is known as “Wiki”
software (from the Hawaiian word for “fast”), which allows users to create or alter content on web page. The system is
very simple: When you open the web site, you can simply search for information or you can log on to become a writer or
editor of articles. If you find an article that interests you – about your hometown, for example – you can correct it or
expand it. This process goes on until no one is interested in making any more changes.

Cambridge University is considering axing compulsory written exams, allowing students to use laptops or iPads

are losing the ability to write by hand.
Dr Sarah Pearsall, a senior lecturer at Cambridge University, said handwriting is becoming a "lost art" among the
current generation of students. She added, "It's increasingly hard for our examiners to read students' scripts. Those with
illegible writing are forced to come back to their college during the summer holidays to read their answers aloud in the
presence of two university administrators. It's extraordinarily commendable that the University is considering reforms to
its examination practices."
Sir Anthony Seldon, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buckingham, said it is inevitable that universities will move to
computers as handwriting deteriorates in the coming years. "We have to accept the reality. Handwriting has now
become an optional, not a necessary, part of education. There simply isn't the same time in the curriculum for learning
elegant, beautiful handwriting. Life is so quick now. Everybody writes as if they were a doctor writing a prescription," he
said. "Handwriting is not necessary for great thought, great English, or great intelligence. Some of our finest wordsmiths
today write using laptops, and we have to fight to preserve what is really important, such as the use of great English or
great sentence structures."
Others, however, were not very positive about the move. Tracey Trussell, a handwriting expert, urged Cambridge to
ensure that students continue to write by hand. She said, "It's vital that people continue to write by hand. Writing by
hand improves memory and equates to a higher rate of comprehension and information retention." There is also concern
that schools could follow Cambridge's example by moving away from handwriting. Dr Jane Medwell, Associate Professor
of Education at the University of Nottingham, is concerned that scrapping handwritten exams in universities could
prompt "downward curriculum pressure" on primary and secondary schools to follow suit.
