Present Continuous Tense

Tense ini digunakan untuk menyatakan kegiatan atau kejadian yang sedang berlangsung sekarang.
Biasanya dicirikan dengan v-ing.
S + to be (am/is/are) + V-ing
Penggunaan subjek serta kata kerja bantu to be.
I + am
He + is You + are
She + is We + are
It + is They + are
(+) S + to be (am/is/are) + V-ing
Budi is cleaning the whiteboard (Budi sedang membersihkan papan tulis)
(-) Subject + to be (am/is/are) + not + V-ing
He is not kicking the ball ( dia tidak sedang menendang bola)
(?) To be (am/is/are) + S + V-ing?
Are you watching TV? (Apakah kamu sedang melihat TV?)
Are they playing football in the school yard? (Apakah mereka sedang bermain sepak bola dihalaman
sekolah?)
Ada beberapa penanda waktu (time signals) yang biasanya digunakan dalam tense ini,
diantaranya now, right now, at the moment, dll. Untuk peletakannya, biasanya di awal kalimat atau
diakhir kalimat:
 Now, they are listening to music ( Sekarang, mereka sedang mendengarkan lagu)
 Are you studying Math right now? ( apakah kamu sedang belajar matematika sekarang?)
 He is not buying a new car at the moment ( dia tidak sedang membeli mobil baru saat ini)

. 2. Past Continuous Tense

Tense ini digunakan untuk mengungkapkan kejadian yang sedang berlangsung di masa lampau.

I + was

(+) S + to be (was/were) + V-ing
Budi is helping his father at 9 am yesterday (Budi sedang membantu ayahnya jam 9 pagi kemarin)
(-) Subject + to be (was/were) + not + V-ing
They were not playing football last week ( mereka tidak sedang bermain bola minggu lalu )
(?) To be (was/were) + S + V-ing?
Were you watching TV when I came to your home yesterday? (Apakah kamu sedang melihat TV ketika
saya datang kemarin?)
Was your father sleeping when there was earthquake last month? (Apakah ayahmu sedang tidur ketika
terjadi gempa bulan lalu?)
 Selain bisa diikuti oleh keterangan waktu, yesterday, last week dan yang lainnya, past continuous tense
ini juga biasanya diikuti oleh conjunction when/while.
 You were watching TV when I came to your home yesterday (kamu sedang nonton TV ketika saya
datang ke rumahmu)
 While my father sleeping, there was earthquake ( ketika ayahku sedang tidur, ada gempa)

3. Future Continuous Tense

Tense ini digunakan untuk menyatakan kejadian yang akan sedang berlangsung besuk atau diwaktu
yang akan datang.

(+) S + will/shall+ be + V-ing

Azzam will be having Math test at 8 a.m. tomorrow (Azzam akan sedang mengerjakan tes Matematika
besuk jam 8 pagi)

(-) Subject + will/shall+ not + be + V-ing

We will not be playing play station at 9 a.m. next sunday ( kita tidak sedang akan bermain playstation
jam 9 pagi besuk minggu )

(?) Will/shall + S + be + V-ing?

Will you be attending Udin’s party next week? (apakah kamu sedang akan menghadiri pestanya Udin
minggu depan?)
