Sexism
Judite- Hi fellow spectators, on today's episode, my colleague and I chose a very
important matter that occurs frequently, in the society we live in. This being: Sexism.
Sexism is a form of discrimination or prejudice based on a person's sex or gender.
A person’s sex is assigned at birth based on biological traits, such as genitalia and
chromosomes. Gender involves how a person feels and self-identifies, and also exists as a
social construct. This consists of societal and cultural roles and norms considered
appropriate for various genders.
Gonçalo- Worldwide, sexism affects women and girls most often. This concept
was originally formulated to raise consciousness about the oppression of girls and
women, although by the early 21st century it had sometimes been expanded to include
the oppression of any sex, including men and boys, intersex people, and transgender
people.
Sexism is the result of biases. A prejudice is a bias that is aimed at a specific
person or group of people. It usually depends on incorrect assumptions, presumptions,
and misconceptions.
Biases regarding gender and sex might be obvious, something that an individual
is conscious of having. But they can also be implicit, in which case a person is not aware
of such.
A typical bias towards gender is referred to by the term "gender determinism."
This is the belief that fundamental variations between men and women—differences
that are unchangeable—determine their own personalities, actions, and capacities.
Judite- You may be wondering, then, what the actual reason for this whole
discussion is. Women's potential is limited in a variety of fields by sexist behaviors that
reinforce biological sex-based stereotypes of social roles. These misogynistic ideas
propagate stories about conventional gender norms, which portray women as inferior
to men in strength and ability. Women are frequently excluded from professional and
political spheres and assigned to home duties. Women are naturally suited for domestic
work, but because of this, their roles are frequently
undervalued or overlooked in favor of men's, which
perpetuates a sexist perception of women's potential.
Misogyny, or hatred of women, is the most
extreme type of sexist ideology. Misogyny-ridden
societies have high rates of violence against women,
such as domestic violence, rape, and the
commodification of women and their bodies. Women are frequently mistreated on an
individual and institutional level when they are viewed as property or second-class
citizens. For example, a woman who is a victim of rape (at the individual or personal
level) may be told by a judge and jury (at the institutional level) that she is accountable
because of how she dresses.
We can see in the graphic representation shown, that there's a visible difference
between womens remunerations and mens. This is a consequence of the women's
exclusion from professional spheres.
A 2017 survey by the Pew Research Center, in the US, found that 42% of women have
experienced gender discrimination at work, such as:
➔ being paid less than a man for doing the same job
➔ being denied a promotion because of their gender
➔ being treated as less competent because of their gender
➔ receiving less support from management than a man doing the same job
Gonçalo- However, this graphic shows the percentage of the population, in
Portugal and the UE27, that doesn’t work because of “Caring responsibilities”. It is
obvious that women, in comparison to men, have a higher percentage, showing a huge
gap between these two genders.
This second graph shows the
number of victims who have been taken
in due to domestic violence. It is obvious
to the public eye, that the gender most
affected by it, is the female gender. The
Rede Nacional de Apoio a Vítimas de
Violência Doméstica has registered 1512
people, 53,2% are women, 45,8%
children and, only 1% men.
Judite- Women must combat such atrocities. The feminist movement pushed
for the end of sexism and legalization of women's rights. Women would achieve
equality in political representation, jobs, education, domestic problems, and
reproductive rights if sexism in institutions and culture were addressed.
I hope you all feel more educated after our analises, Gonçalo and I felt the need
to finally address this problem. Give your suggestions for our next episode in the link
below. Thank you!
